V, V , . ., W ., ,. , 'I'l Foundations in Education . . . The Class of 1958 received the basis of their educa- tion in five schools: Worthington Elementary, built in 1938, Sharon, erected in 1949, which is no longer in the system, Homedale, our oldest school, built in 1923, Flint School established in 1929, and North Perry School in Linworth. ln 1955 Colonial' Hills School was added to our system. The next step in the building of their knowledge which brought the classmates into one unified class was Junior High School. The final hurdle of their education was attending Worthington High. The academic wing, which was fin- ished in 1951, the administration wing, finished in the next year, and the gymnasium, completed in 1953 pro- vided many never-to-be-forgotten moments for the class. Worthington High School has supplied excellent teachers and many opportunities for a well-rounded education. The staff led the students not only in the gaining of knowledge but also in the forming of high standards of living. The ideals and goals acquired during high school will follow the class throughout the future. It will be with mixed emotions that the Seniors leave Worthington High School. Some will be ioyful, reminis- cent, grateful, or sorrowful. Most will leave with a mix- ture of these emotions and with a heart full of memories of working, studying, and playing together as a class. No matter what paths the individuals take, they will always remember the years spent at W.H.S. Homedale Elementary Flint Elementary L - Nga ,si Reminiscing with the Past North Perry Elementary K Sharon Elementary Worthington Elementary Worthington Junior High af I' MA V 'I4 I Mr. Glenn D. Williams entered the Worthington school sys- tem as a teacher in 1950. ln 1956 he became principal ofthe high school. Mr. Williams attended O. S. U. where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree and later his Master of Arts degree, both in education. Congratulations are in order for the members of the class of 1958. lt is my sincere wish that you remember us as old friends and call upon us for help whenever the need arises. l want to wish success in everything you attempt and extend my sincere hope that the preparation you have received here will stand you in good stead. Good luck and best of everything. Mr. H. C. McCord, who has been Superintendent of Worth- ington Schools for the past nineteen years, entered our system in 1930. Before becoming principal in 1935, he taught physical education and industrial arts. Mr. McCord graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science degree and received his Master of Arts from O.S.U. Congratulations to the Senior Class of 1958 for the many fine accomplishments made during your high school years. Our best wishes and continued interest go with you as you leave high school to enter new careers. We will be glad to serve you at any time our help is needed. Secretory Judy Hindes SENIOR CLASS Reunion in Remembrance As the Class of 1958 recalls its high school years, their memories include many hours of rewarding study, class proiects, which were hard work but fun, and the many, many enioyable social events. Recalling our Freshman year, we remember President Curt Stumpf, who set our class on the path of success. Peg Campbell, Homecoming attendant, and our Hallowe'en attendant, Nancy Ingram, represented our class on courts. Viewing our Sophomore year, we see that John Stump was our capable president, while Peggy Stine and Carol Carpenter were our Homecoming and Hallowe'en attendants respectively. We are proud as we remember that Peg Campbell was also chosen to be a member of the Cardinal Queen Court. Our reflections turn finally to our last two years of high school. As Juniors, Tom Patchett was elected as our enthusiastic president and our efforts were rewarded by great successes, one of these being Down to Earth , our first class play, and Blue Moon , the enchanting Junior-Senior Prom. Debby War- ren was elected to the Homecoming Court, and Linda Bird to the Hallowe'en Court. Linda was elected to the Cardinal Court, as was Carol Carpenter. Linda was crowned the 1957 Cardinal Queen. Finally, as we journey through our hall of memories, we enter our Senior year, packed full of dinners, taffy sales, and, of course, the sale of chips and corn . Heading the class in its last year was Terry Davis. Another hard worker, who did much for the betterment of the entire high school, was John Stump, Student Body President. The class play was the comedy, January Thaw . Homecoming Queen, Carol Carpenter, reigned over the Homecoming festivities with Linda Bird as her Senior attendant. Queen of the HaIlowe'en Festival was Peg Campbell, while Madeline Wing was chosen to be her Senior attendant. Our class was well represented on the Cardinal Court during our Senior year. Among the seven finalists, the five Seniors were Rosalyn Gilpatrick, Karen Cain, Madeline Wing, Judy Hindes, and Sandy Dunkin. Sandy Dunkin was crowned 1958 Cardinal Queen. Climaxing our four years of conscientious effort striving toward one goal, we saw our dream come true! We embarked on our Senior trip to Washington, D.C. and New York. As our class separates and each person follows a different path, we will always remember that one path through W.H.S. which we traveled together-overcoming all obstacles. Some changes in procedure were evidenced as a result of our acquiring membership in this group. A single election was held this year instead of the customary Fall and Spring elections. The provisions for member- ship were' somewhat more stringent than those for the Franklin County Group. Although Worthington enioyed a happy and successful affiliation with the Franklin County Honor Society, the National Group will un- doubtedly carry more weight and added advantage for the student body. We are proud and happy to receive acceptance from the National Honor Society of the United States. This is an affiliate group of the National Principal's Association, and of the North-Central Asso- ciation of Secondary Schools and Colleges. Installation of the group was held April 7 with the Arlington Chapter acting as installing officers and spon- sors in an impressive ceremony held in candlelight. BUSINESS CLUB Creating an interest in business occupations and developing competent and aggressive leaders are two af the maior purposes of the Business Club, which has just completed its first year at W.H.S. Highlighting the year was a talk by Mr. Hugo Wentzel of Timken Roller Bearing Com- pany on personnel problems. Again, after a full year of activity, the members have learned many worthwhile facts concerning business and have also had many enioyable times together. CARDINAL Producing another exciting Worthington Cardinal kept Editor Peg Campbell and her entire staff on the go until the last carefully checked page was sent in. With a sigh of relief, they anxiously awaited the day when the completed T958 Cardinal would arrive. The editorial staff met every Saturday morning. Re- ducing pictures, indexing names, writing all copy, and typing all material were only a few of theirrmany duties as the staff strove to create a superior yearbook. Peg worked industriously toward this aim as she spent much of her own time organizing and checking every page before it was sent to the printer. This year, because of increased cost of production, the staff was forced to work harder than ever to reach their goal. Selling subscriptions for the l958 Cardinal, braving all kinds of weather to sell ads, such an essential part of yearbook production, and laying plans for record dances dominated their out-of-school hours. Heading the Business Staff was Manager Bruce Mahaffey. Without the efforts of Bruce and his staff, it would have been im- possible to produce this yearbook. Ably backing Charlotte and learning all the ropes was Sharon Douglass, Assistant Editor. A new column, Senior Spotlight , proved to be of great interest. In its final Mid-Six season W.H.S. finished fourth in the league. Starting the season was a preview game at Hilliards in which we rolled up fourteen points. Friday, September 13, proved to be unlucky for Grandview as Worthington claimed a muddy victory, 2l-6. One of the most thrilling gridiron battles of the year occurred in the last minutes of the Delaware game. The entire game had been played in a drenching rain and with seven minutes to go the Panthers intercepted a Cardinal pass on our own eight yard line and carried it over for six points. For the remainder of the contest, both teams were plagued by penalties, fumbles, and the incessant downpour as the Cards clung to a precious one point lead. Following were setbacks by London and Marysville, our only losses of the season. A sound passing attack brought us through triumphant over Hilliards. An exciting Homecoming was provided by Westerville, whom we fought to a 6-6 tie. Widespread flu caused the cancellation of our game with Grove City. The season came to a close on a happy note when the Cardinals downed Bexley T6-6. The fighting Cards were led by co-captains Steve Ream and Dick Teets. Coach Dow Nelson assisted by Coach Howell guided the team to victory. 98 ROW I: D. Steinman, D. Maxey, K. Sonner, S. Ream, D. Teets, L. Rite, J. Lutz, B. McNaughten, R. Chacey, T. Davis. ROW 2: R. Victorious varsity . . . Ending with a l2-6 record at the end ot the regularlseason, the Cardinal team made a fine showing. In Mid-Six play, even though we placed third with a 6-4 record, our four losses were by narrow margins. We did, however, win a very convincing game over Bexley, the champion ofthe Central Buckeye League, which we are entering this coming year. The London contest is the most memorable in which Co-captain Junior Laws sank a two-pointer from the floor in the last two second, giving us the victory. The 'fighting Cardinals, entering into their first year of Christmas Carnival play, overpowered Whitehall and Arlington to receive the winner's trophy. Serving as co-captains for the T958 season were seniors Junior Laws and Bob McNaughten, while the varsity cheerleaders -Linda Bird, Carol Carpenter, Nancy Ingram, Pat Hushower, and Barbara Severns-upheld the school spirit among the students. These seniors include Garth Workman, Larry Rife, Terry Davis, Ron Chacey, Keith Sonner, Bill Keating, Steve Ream, and Bob Warren. The sport is rapidly gathering popularity among the participants and the spectators. We're all proud of this year's squad, and we want to wish them the best of luck Capwn Terry Dan in their forthcoming seasons. I I ROW I: D. MacVicar, B. McCord, P. Pappas, M. Martin, G. Workman, B. The squad topped Westerville, Upper Arlington, and Grandview in dual meets. They won the Worthington Relays, Parents Night, the Mid-Six Meet, and the Arlington Relays. Adding to this spectacular record is the District Meet in which they took second place. Duane Pelkey climaxed the season by capturing the State High Hurdle title. Rating high in the squad of Worthington cinder men were the T958 seniors-Jim Baker, Dave Budbill, Steve Ream, Larry Rife, Doug Severino, Pete Skaates, Joe Springer, and Bob Warren. This year's track team looks very promising, but they will have to work hard to beat last year's top-notch squad. We wish them the best of luck, and hope that they have many more successful seasons. Each page represents a great deal of effort by many members of the staff. Every person on the Cardinal staff worked to his maximum to produce a yearbook which you will long remember. Recognition goes to Barbara Bourke for her excellent art work on the division pages and in the opening sec- tion. She spent many hours designing and drawing the art work on the division pages. Thanks also to Bruce Mahaffey, Business Manager, Linda Bird, Judy Hindes, Margaret Roloson, Rosalyn Gilpatrick, Carol Carpenter, Sandy Dunkin, Judy Robinson, Joe Lutz, Steve Ream, and Pat Hushower, my associate editors and my section editors. They spent almost every Saturday from October to March working on layouts, write-ups, and index, they 160 worked tirelessly and deserve a lot of credit. Kay Green, assistant editor, learned quickly and did excellent work. She was a great help in all phases of the yearbook's production. Without the excellent help and advice given by Mr. Phipps, advisor, we would have had many more problems than we did. The iob of photography editor was handled very well by Madeleine Wing, who spent a great deal of her own time developing pictures and making picture schedules. We certainly hope that you have enioyed your record of the year and that you will turn back to the book in your leisure hours and remember all of the wonderful experiences. Our iob is finished, our worries are over, and our sincerest hope is that we have pleased each and every one of you.
