D fy Regional Winners I look back on this basketball season with mixed emotions. Those closest to the surface are pride and thankfulness, First, of course, is pride in the record we compiled and the trophies we won. More than these, however, I am proud that throughout it all I coached not only fine ball players, but real gentlemen. With few exceptions, both on the court and off, they were a credit to their school and themselves, Every year has its highs--the Bunker Hill victory with Fred’s last-second bucket, the third-place victory at the conference tourney, the district championship with Gary and Wally working like a machine, and the first-game regional win, Every year has its lows--the first game jitters when we lost to Waterloo, the disaster at Waverly, the sadness at losing that final game, These things placed aside, I was asked in an interview after the district championship why I would leave a large city school to come to a small town, My answer was that there wasn’t the closeness between the coach and player there that I found here. There lies the thankfulness I expressed in the beginning of this statement. I am thankful I had this year to learn toknow and to like every one of the boys. I am proud to have coached --Gary, who put ‘“‘mind’’ over ‘‘matter’’ to come through; Wally, who placed a team above personal glory; Paul, who had the knack of being there when needed most; Donnie, with those moves which promise so much for next year; Fred, whose clutch play saved us more than once; Jim, who moved up to fill a big need; Lennie, with his really fine latter part of the season play; Don Anderson, who shows signs of getting his name in the paper for more than a foul next season; and last but not least, Eddie, whom I watched turn into a man with the passing of the basketball season. To the seniors, I say we’ll miss you next year; to the rest, I’ll say we’ll see you next season (with haircuts!). As a closing, let me add that without the support of one of the greatest groups of cheerleaders and fans I’ve ever seen, we couldn’t have finished as we did. Thanks, too, to Asst. Coach Houck for the midnight coffee breaks to cheer me up or calm me down, for finding lost keys, carrying scorebooks, and being handy to ‘‘holler’’ at, Thanks to my wife for putting up with me for another season! HOMETOWN JOBS for hometown people With Rural Electricity All over America today, officials and mem- bers of consumer-owned rural electric sys- tems such as ours, are working with local businessmen and civic leaders to help develop new industry. New industry means new jobs--hometown jobs... for hometown people. These jobs mean payrolls which help keep the wheels of commerce turning in our towns... and help check the economic erosion that threatens our rural communities, We are proud to be part of America's rural electrification program, serving our mem- bers and our communities, and helping to keep this nation economically strong.
