Commanding Officer Capt. Harold R. Youman, Jr., USN Captain Harold R. Youman, Jr., U. S. Navy, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, was commissioned an Ensign, United States Naval Reserve on 28 July 1943 upon grad- uation from the USNR Midshipman Train- ing School, Coltunbia University. He was initially assigned to PT Boat Train- ing and served in PT Boats in the Pacific until the end of the war in 1945. After the war he served as Engineering Officer in USS CALLISTO and then as Engineering and Executive Officer in USS PRESQUE ISLE. Following tours of duty as Opera- tions Officer in USS BAILEY QDD-7131 and on the staff of COMDESRON FOUR, he attended the General Line School at Monterey, California, completing his duty ashore as an instructor at the NROTC Unit Tulane University in June 1953. After a tour as Executive Officer in USS HOLDER QDD-8193, he assumed command of USS STRICKLAND QDER-3331 in June 1955. From November 1956 to July 1959, he served in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as Head, BUSHIPS Programs, and from there he attended the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk Virginia. After completing a two-year as Operations Officer in USS LONG BEACH QCG QNJ-95, he assumed command of USS WILKINSON QDL-5J in May 1962. During the period August 1964 to June 1965, he attended the National War College in Washington, D.C. Captain Youman then commanded USS SHE- NANDOAH QAD-269 for a year. In June 1966 he reported to the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for duty in the Strategic Operations Division. In July 1967, Captain Youman became Deputy Director for Operations in the Nation Military Command Center, where he served until April, 1968. Captain Youman assumed command of USS WOR- DEN QDLG-185 at Vallejo, California, on 3 May, 1968. Captain Youman has been awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his con- tributions while on duty at the National Military Command Center. He also has received the following campaign and service medals: Asiatic-Pacific, American The- ater, Vic to r y , Occupation, National De- fense, Philippines Liberation, New Guinea, Solomons, Philippines, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Captain Youman is married to the former Dorothy M. Blance of Washington, D.C., and has two children, Kevin Clarke, age 12, and Craig Scott, age 10. E 3
