WOFZDEN sailed on a Western Pacific deployment, leaving its home port of Pearl Harbor, on March 12th and steamed over 40,000 nautical miles prior to return August 15th. During this time the ports of Subic Bay, Singa- pore, Mombasa, Diego Garcia and Perth! Fremantle were visited. Prior to entering Perth, Captain Henderson A. Hodge lll relieved Captain John E. Liebmann. In the pages which follow, is a pictorial depiction of life aboard cruiser WORDEN. While the photographs may portray a particular event, what you are really seeing in the aggregate is teamwork. The result of WOFiDEN's teamwork is readiness to tight when called upon. Up early and ix -f to bed late, CDR Shannon kept going all day, every day. Jiggs,' Franc YNC1ClIcfmmand Master Chief Command Master Chief Jiggs Franchi Master Chief Franchi takes time out of his very busy day to catch a few of the Indian Ocean rays. He came home with quite a tan. YNCMQSWQ Jiggs Franchi was born in Brooklyn, New York September 1, 1935, and enlisted in the Navy on October 29, 1954. Master Chief Franchi has served at sea onboard USS HYMAN QDD-7327, USS DUXBUBY BAY QAVP-383, USS PENOBSCOT QATA-1881, USS SAN PABLO QAGS-303, and USS BADGEB QFF-10715. Ashore he served at the U. S. Naval Receiving Station, Brooklyn, New Yorkg U. S. Navy Recruiting Station New York: the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station in Brooklyn, U. S. Military Assistance Command Saigon BVN' Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet and Naval Logistics Force, U. S.,Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor. He came to WOBDEN on July 30, 1982 from the staff of Commander N I ' ' ' ' ' ava Surface Group Middle Pacific, in Pearl, and it looks like he will be around for a long time to come. He is married to the former Gerry Lambert of Brooklyn and they have one son, Francis, who serves proudly with the air side of the Navy. l 'N WORDEN's chaplain, LCDB Bill Tumbleson, had an exten- sive program for the crew during deployment. Among the workshops given were Marriage Enrichment, a Pre-Marriage Seminar, a Stress Management Workshop and other helpful courses. LT Peter Gumataotao was the Roman Catholic Lay Leader and had several groups as did the Protestant Lay Fieader, EW2 Keith Pitts.
