m Riii li m 1 WORCESTER STATE COLLEGE WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS CLASS OF 1969 Time it was, and what a time it was, It was ... a time of innocence, a time of confidences. Long ago ... It must be ... I have a photograph. Preserve your memories) They’re all that’s left you. Paul Simon Let ' s go Come on Let ' s go Empty out our pockets and disappear. Missing all our appointments and turning up unshaven years later old cigarette papers stuck in our pants leaves in our hair. Lawrence Ferlinghetti (r 7 crowds of collegians all talking and talking and walking around or hanging out windows to see what’s doing out in the world where everything happens sooner or later if it happens at all Lawrence Ferlinghetti 9 and the long street which is the longest street in all the world but which isn’t as long as it seems passes on Lawrence Ferlinghetti 10 1 To-day is not yesterday; we ourselves change; how can our Works and Thoughts, if they are always to be the fittest, continue always the samel Change, indeed, is painful; yet ever needful; and if Memory have its force and worth, so also has Hope. Thomas Carlyle V ' ? Without ideals, without effort, without scholarship, without philosophical continuity, there is no such thing as education. Henry George 17 I lAan is yet free, during his brief years, to examine, to criticise, to know, and in imagination to create. Bertrand Bussell 19 To know Meaning to celebrate ■■ Meaning To become “in some way” Another-, to come To a becoming- To have come well. Harry Rago I cant say whether we had more wit amongst us than usual, but I am certain we had more laughing which answered the end as well. Oliver Goldsmith 23 As mens faces smile on those who smile, so they respond to those who weep. Horace As I being poor have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet Tread softly because you tread on my dreams. I 29 When you are old and gray and full of sleep, A nd nodding by the fire, take down this book. And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep. William Butler Yeats sorrow to-morro r • ' i J . :- SH K. I ' f ' ljMili V JPm| -i ' S r c J|B[f |H[ H ' i DR. EDWIN B. HEDMAN “Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair. I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy — ecstasy so great that I would often have sacri- ficed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness — that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I have sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what — at least — I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved. Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneli- ness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.” from The Autobiography of Bertrand Russell wril«’-‘ ' . ' - £■? i ' ' i ' VTS.V ' V MR. ROBERT E. TODD Having witnessed the first of many significant, deep-seated changes in the philosophy of the college, the Senior Class of ’69 has attempted to incorporate into the yearbook this new sense of growth and freedom. We have chosen therefore, to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Robert Todd, who has made a distinctive contribution to furthering the image of the college in the community. An outstanding member of the English Department, Mr. Todd has brought the college’s drama pro- ductions from the level of the annual high school play, to the most ambitious and contemporaneous of theater efforts. His intense interest in theater and enthusiasm for his student actors, coupled with his perception as a director, have produced many fine actors and actresses, who continue to play in this community and elsewhere. Mr. Todd’s classes are among the best attended. He gives something quite personal to his lectures, bringing the subject matter into immediacy with an informed sense of the contemporary. With his knowledge of theater techniques and acting, dramas from Sophocles to Albee become dynamic, living situations. Mr. Todd has also made an impact on the intellectual community. His papers have been published frequently in scholarly journals and he is particularly eminent in the field of psychological criticism. We would like to thank Mr. Todd for the sincere interest he has manifested in meeting the needs of the students in a period when faculty support is essential. We congratulate him on the formation of a drama department in the college, largely through his efforts. It would not be in error, we think, to credit Mr. Todd with making a significant start in changing the concept of Worcester State College to a liberal institution where students and teachers can find satisfaction and relevance in education. ! 37 PRESIDENT EUGENE A. We alienate ourselves from wisdom when we sacrifice our convictions to protect our- selves. We blind ourselves to wisdom when we fear change, solely because it contradicts tradition. We as in- dividuals must consider our motives. We must continually re-evaluate our reasons. We must stand on the pe- riphery of our great circle of life and take a good hard objective look at ourselves and our ideals ... in this way may we continue to grow in spirit and in truth. These past few years have been a testing ground for our convictions ... If we can adapt to the ever-changing world, and yet be uncompromising in our convictions — tempered by wisdom — we will begin to realize our full potential . . . Our share is proportionately larger than the others’ because proportionately we have more to give . . . Let us dedicate ourselves ... to tame the savage- ness of man and make gentle the life of the world. Let us dedicate ourselves to that and say a prayer for our country and our people. Paul K.
