Worcester, Mass. B.S. Education Choir, S.N.E.A., 0.rkleaf 183 The class of 1968 is a very fortunate class. Yes, fortunate that we have been given the opportunity of a college education, fortunate that vve have been nurtured in this affluent American society, fortunate that our instructors have been competent and understanding, and fortunate that our parents have had enough love and stamina to encourage and at times prod us through our college careers. But more than all of this, we are fortunate in that we have discovered the joy of doing things together. There are some people who believe and would have all others believe that our generation is prone towards apathy, irresponsibility, cowardness, selfishness, and immorality. They see the riots, the draft dodgers, the Berkley’s, and the hippies as an indication of a general moral and social disintegration. Some have even gone as far as to draw parallels between the trends of our generation and that of Gibbon’s Fall of the Roruan Empire. These poor, un- fortunate individuals are the ostriches of negative thinking and they have buried their heads in the sands of their own selfrirrhteousness. The only difference between our class and the hippies, or any other element within the spectrum of the New Left, is that we have direction, and we have a definite sense of purpose and belonging. ' We know where we are going and we have been shown how to get there. By sharing the same hopes, problems, and ideals, we have arrived at similar goals. We have learned that a positive good can be attained through united sacrifice, and application, and by working together, have discovered a deeper and richer understanding of ourselves and our fellow man. There is within the youth of today a swelling of great anxiety. They do not look to alleviate this anxiety pri- marily through financial gain or through ascendency over their fellow man. But rather their quest is for the peace of mind that will come in knowing that they have contributed in some way to the betterment of mankind. But youth is impatient, and many feel that their ideals will tarnish with age and that their individuality will be drowned in the dreadful sea of conformity. We, the class of 1968, have not been forced to sacrifice or even compromise our ideals and individuality, but rather we have allowed them to mature. Shortly we will be ingested by society with the stature and privileges of professional men and women. The world will not look upon us as extremists or as being socially unacceptable. We will not attack society at every opportunity β€” becoming anti-this and anti-that. We will not throw up our arms in utter despair, satis- fied merely with a passive existence. We will enter society with a quiet but determined resolve to improve the well- being and dignity of man. Perhaps the worlel will listen to us. 84 Mia L
