This was indeed a memorable year to be a senior. As you look back on this Centennial Year, you will re- member with pleasure and perhaps with some nostalgia that you were on Boynton Hill when Worcester Tech completed its first century. Just as the graduates who trod the floors of Boyn- ton Hall before you have given Wor- cester Tech its present stature by their accomplishments, so, too, will this Class of 1965 make its own page in Tech history. With mixed emotions, we receive the excellent 1965 Peddler; it means the nearing of the end of our pleasant and worth-while associations with you as undergraduates, but it also means that you are now ready to leave behind those good old days and move into that demanding world for which you have so long and carefully prepared. May your direction always be up — that is the Worcester Tech way. The world before you is beset with problems which previous genera- tions have never known. But then, your generation is prepared as none ever was before you to solve them. Look for opportunities to serve, to give. Your personal reward will be di- rectly proportionate to what you give of yourself. Take pride that you have already given of yourselves to help make Wor- cester Tech the fine school it is. Goddard. . . the father of American Rocketry and Elwood Haynes. . . a pioneer of the American Automobile. 35 MM Through the years, though buildings and students change, customs and traditions never alter. 36 The Sophomore will always battle the Freshman, the Junior will always befriend the Freshman and the Senior will never give a damn about any of them. i ttomt m 37 Students come and go but it seems like there is always the ubiquitous mentor. P. I., 1918; Instructor in Electrical Engineering, 1921-28; Assistant Professor, 1928-. PARKS NEWELL is greatly esteemed by all who have had the good fortune to be in one of his classes. He has acquired a secret which we sincerely wish hs would im- part to some of the other professors, the art of painless teaching. Sparky seems to cast a spell over the lazy and sleepy student, caus- ing him to take an interest in the class. The apparently most complicated circuit diagrams appear simple when he analyzes them for us with lightning speed. His constant reference to the practical side of electrical theory causes our waning spirits to return with new life. Outside the classroom, Sparky still persists in making life interesting: he spends- the late hours of the evening keeping the local radio station on the air. It has been whispered about the campus that Cagey has secretly used certain well-known hair tonics in a hitherto vain attempt to remedy this provoking state of affairs. However, we predict that a few years of married life is going to do more good than several gallons of tonic. The much abused freebody is Pinkie ' s pet plaything. Indeed, it is his firm belief, we think, that the drawing of a correct F.B. represents the highest type of engineering analysis. Are Freshmen aware of the hundred years of development as they are told to CROSS WEST STREET BY EARLE BRIDGE ONLY Do they even consider who Admiral Ralph Earle was? From that first bright Monday morning in September when the Freshman steps into the ominous cavern that is 101 , he is concentrating on one main objective . . . survival. 51 Pressures, unequaling human description and tolerance, are placed directly on the heads of these unsuspecting mortals and only small diversions can help right these troubled times. -  « MI £d£§M«tf There ' s nothing like eleven fearless men smashing up the middle to mak« the potential engineer forget his own problems for a while. 53 54 Yes, this is Worcester Tech at the start of another academic year when the Freshman is scared, the Sophomore is bewildered, the Junior is expectant and the Senior is thankful. We are together and We are alone . . . no matter how large the area, no matter how great the number. 57 . ■ fu . - . | •■• • flP ' JMPWWT • . kit These times are warm and these times are remembered but these times are also few and far between Monday morning and again you ' re walking with K E seeing sights that you will be seeing for four years. 59 Autumn is a time for self-evaluation: a time for everv mind to reach out and seek an answer to the big questions of life. for after the Fall one becomes too involved in other matters. There are places to sleep and places to work but somehow we alwavs lose the place to contemplate. And the Autumn drops away into the winter. Falling leaves are replaced by winter ' s breath. jj ty im jai Cool football and soccer are replaced by cold hockey and basketball. There is a certain mystery that comes over Worcester Tech after the leaves have fallen from the trees. 64 It ' s almost a premeditated silence that fills every corner and crevice of the campus. 65 ;■ 1 :4 HI Ml lllliniUTilili tl It ' s the silence of a cold rain swept day, the silence between chess moves, the silence of human computers complete except for the soft whirr and blinking lights. What goes on in the minds of these human machines as they go through their prescribed paces? 68 « . With the initial freshness of Autumn over, their thoughts must turn to a more serious vein. The next time he asks to copy my homework, I ' ll tell him to drop dead. 70 If I have to go to one more fraternity party alone, I ' ll throw up. Suppose my name comes up for Who ' s Who. Will everyone ask Who ' s He? Yes, the mind will awaken once again after the Worcester ' s winter has run its course but that will not be for some time. i i ' ... 7. -:- O Worcester Mass, thou fold thy tent and steal away; and with you, go the imaginations of 1200 students. 73 Any other school would find the winter time advantageous to begin phone booth stuffing, dope pushing and drag racing but not so, Worcester Tech. No, they haven ' t even fouled out for this is the cold season and with this season comes sports. 76 — 2 jk  ' - 3 77 There ' s sport for the tall and sport for the short. There ' s sport for t he slim and sport for the heavy. HBMBII IH Bfl A school, especially a technical school, could be the finest place in the world to study a single species of man. Gone are the days of the misconception that all engineers are skinny eggheads with iron frame glasses. 82 83 muTOn Vr ,t j I DBMf tjCl ' i Stop in a classroom sometime. Look around. Yon can probably see fourteen yawning-souls, three desk writing hoods, and one fellow taking notes. This might be slightly exaggerated but let ' s take a closer look at that kid taking notes. Even he could come in a hundred different types from a sliderule on the hip type to the all out for Tech rah rah yea type. So, when a person digests all these facts and realizes that a school of some 1200 has some 1200 different types, and you put them all together, they will spell. . . 86 FRATERNITY PARTY. Back a rabbit up against a wall and it will fight. Back a working engineer up against a Saturday night and he ' ll swing or give it a good show. 88 . ; Since the human body is always producing energy and Tech ' s human body sits at a desk seven days a week and stores this energy; . . . when the faucet is turned, out comes the Mississippi River. s And it is this river which makes the engineer what he is now and what he will be in future years. Inhibition manifests itself in countless ways from crying in your beer to climbing up a wall or anywhere in between. 91 Although the actions of the engineer carry through to June, it is now when these habits are formulated. It is seldom that a winter drunk will turn to a spring tea although in the case of the senior class the reverse is quite possible. 93 94 One would think, however, that a sophisticated college man would wine and dine in moderation and splendor. But what of Worcester, Massachusetts? Surely a city encompassing so many must hold some charm. There must be at least one beautiful corner of the world here. 97 jpsL- ?5y w j—u i ™ fi . Imagine if you were in school in Florida or Southern California. How can you compare swimming in the warm Pacific to the joy of Tech ' s aqualand? You wouldn ' t want to be too healthy with that all year tan, now would you? LIKE HELL YOU WOULDN ' T. 98 Believe it or not the snow finally does melt in Worcester and with its passing comes a new and exciting transformation 100 A transformation which takes the engineer out of his cubical and into the sunshine. 101 Even the new Freshman can taste that scent in the air which says to him that he ' s coming down the home stretch of his first BIG year. The air is alive and every student knows it. Where once, friends huddled together in artificial warmth . . . These places become vacated in favor of Mother Earth. With a song in their hearts and cultural endeavors in their minds, the world once again looks bright. 104 - ■ ' .... Now is the time for finding out just what keeps 180,000 people together. Even though, at times, it seems as if they ' re all grouped on one street. The work keeps on rolling in but somehow during these days of beaches and baseball, the roar of the instructor gets lost in the roar of the crowd. 108 Neglect is a word that never enters one ' s mind for in these days, work and activity are merely rechanneled. 109 . Spring runs rampant with all its energy being contagious. v, ' flPOT With mad, wild, uncontrollable, straining energies Amidst rackets wheeling and sticks swinging, the school takes . . . 116 Flight into a new social season; a season of fraternities, beaches and The Junior Prom. Spring advances with days getting lazier and lazier but never let it be said that Worcester Tech sleeps. A school which has been in existence for one hundred years can NEVER sleep . . . For it is only through progress and development that a great school can stay great .
