I, -V - If is-g-A IM 0 g FA For making Worcester High School a symbol of scholarship, good sportsmanship, wholesome recreation, teamwork, sincerity, and citizenship, THE INDIAN staff proudly dedicates the 1956 INDIAN to the past, present, and future students of WORCESTER HIGH SCHOOL. To the Seniors: I congratulate you, the Class of 1956, for your faithfulness, loyalty, courage, and your forward look into the future. For the most valued possession in 'the intellectual field is not obtained without hard labor, Your ambition, the law of compensation demands a return in endeavor as great as that which you hope to receive. This is one great beauty of education. Another is that you may give, with all generosity, all you possess and still have it in your possession, perhaps multiplied. You will have lost nothing and the world will have gained much, Never come to a standstill in life. Whatever chances to be your compensation, there will be places for improvement and opportunities to do better. You, like all others, will have your unoccupied times, your hours and minutes found here and there unclaimed. Cherish these bits of eternity, for now is eternity. It is not to comeg it is here, Your Principal, in J' A 3 ,Ae ff K hi... w-eww A 14584 7754421 O Worcester High! My one and only school! Where I learned to obey the laws and rules. As we leave our school life to enter into life's school, we shall not forget the glorious days spent at Worcester High. For those of us who have reached this climatic point, let us turn our minds back to September 8, 1953, when ninety of us entered the new Worcester High School. On that day we were divided into three sections and our home- room teachers were: Mr. Scottie Owens - 10A, Mr. Oliver Williams - 1OB, and Mr. James Wilson - 10C. During that year Matthew Gillette and Gloria Worthington were prominent figures in boys' and girls' basketball respectively. Leroy Holland was excellent in track and field events at Morgan State College. Not only did our class stand out in sports, but we made history in scholarship. Barry Fortune maintained an A average during that year and was one of the few students who made. the Principal's List, At the close of that school year, we realized that we had reached another milestone in life. As we came back for another glorious school year, the membership of our class dropped. We were divided into two groups and our homeroom teachers were: Miss Helen M. Timmons - 11A, and Mrs. Winifred Y. Dutton - 11B. During this year, we were organized for great things under the leadership of Willard Brown, Class President, Barry Fortune, Vice President, Shirley Hudson, Secretaryg Jeannette Milbourne, Assistant Secretary, Matthew Gillette, Treasurer, and George Armstrong, Assistant Treasurer. Our responsibilities were not lesened, but in- creased because we were to sponsor the Junior-Senior Prom. This we did successfully, using Evening In Paris as our theme. Again Matthew Gillette was outstanding in basketball, Leroy Holland and Alfred Jarmon were prominent in track and field events. Many of our classmates became outstanding figures in student government. They were: Willard Brown, Vice President of Student Council, Gloria Worthington, Assistant Secretary, Barry Fortune and Matthew Gillette were representatives of 11th grade. Several of our leading students took an Intercollegiate Examination at the Salisbury High School. They were: Shirley Hudson, Willard Brown, Barry Fortune and Isaac Williams. As we left for the summer of 1955, we were looking forward to the climax, Commencement. Upon returning in the fall of '55, forty-two enthusiastic seniors were assigned to one homeroom under the supervision of Mrs. Winifred Y. Dutton. This last year started out with a bang. Our first major job was to sponsor the yearbook, The Indian. The yearbook was edited by a competent staff. The class was guided by the fine leadership of Barry Fortune, Class Presidentg Willard Brown, Vice Presidentg Ernestine Drummond, Secretaryg Eva Collick, Assistant Secretary, Matthew Gillette, Treasurerg and George Armstrong, Assistant Treasurer, During the year we produced a Christmas Operetta Red Candles with the main characters enacted by Rebecca White and Eva Collick, Later we produced a hillbilly comedy, 'Aaron Slick from Punkin Crick. The main actors and actresses were: Isaac Williams, Esther Holden, Betty A. Waters, Gloria Worthington, Matthew Gillette, Harold Purnell, and Eva Collick, We also sponsored a Spring Carnival which was quite successful. Among the school activities, Shirley Hudson was crowned Miss Worcester. She represented our school at the Morgan State College Homecoming game. Matthew Gillette was again outstanding in basketball. Our classmates were also prominent figures in the student government. Marrhew Gillette, President of the Student Councilg Gloria Worthington, Secretary, Shirley Hudson, Assistant Treasurerg and Willard Brown, Representative of the 12th grade. The New Homemakers of America was organized under the leadership of Eva Collick, President and Thelma Purnell. Vice President. To keep our scholastic attainment high, again Barry Fortune, Isaac Williams, Raymond White and Matthew Gillette took the Intercollegiate College Examination at Salisbury, Maryland. Thelma Purnell was the winner of the Betty Crocker test given at Worcester, Our scholastic attainment remained high and we labored hard to make our dream of 1953 a reality. We firmly believe that He Conquers All Who Conquers Himself. Ode to aa my O Worcester High, we say farewellg Our sorrow and grief we'll never tellg To all our friends we bid adieug We pledge our love to you, As we leave this stately shrineg You'll always linger in our mind, Your spirit from us ne'er shall pang We'll pray for you with all our heart, O friends, teachers, and principal toog For all your good we prayg We do! To Him we pray Who loves us each the same We'll strive to uphold your glorious name, Your colors, black and gold, are trueg We gladly share thei.r glory with youg A symbol of leaving they have been, To praise your colors is no sin, Through every day we live toseeg Through strife and need we'll be with theeg To all our friends we bid adieug O Worcester High, farewell to you, Written by: Barry Fortune Harold Purnell W9 Tune Melody of Love' High School days are o'er, but we're not free Higher fields of learning we must seek, We will make the best of life, you'll see, Dear Old Worcester High, we're leaving thee, A new life is dawning, we'll onward look, Make adjustments to life's curves and crooks: Lessons we will leam but H011 from books, Dear Old Worcester High, we're leaving you, From the halls of Worcester, we must go, Molded for life's work, you've made it so, We will strive to make you proud with note, Dear Old Worcester High, we love you so, So we say farewell to Worcester High, In thy tow'ring halls, mem-o-ries lieg We have struggled hard, now we are through, Dear Old Worcester High, we're leaving you, Lyric: Ernestine Drummond Willard Brown Matthew Gillette aan 0 MOTTO: He conquers all who conquers himself Q ,-J-ff, president Assistant Secretary BARRY FORTUNE EVA COLLICK Q S 5 vice President . The operetta was presented by the senior class for the purpose -of helping to finance their yearbook. This operetta was centered a- round two girls who had not seen 'their mother for five years, The 'two girls, Libby and Gilda, had to stay with a guardian until their mother was found, Libby remem- bered he-r mother by a pic-ture on the table. On Christmas eve, after Libby 'had gone to bed, the spirit of Chrigtmas, Santa Claus, Snow Flake and the Wooden Soldiers came to Libbyls house, Also, on Christmas Day, Madam Clara came -to Libby's house to visit Mable and saw her picture. Seeing this picture brought back Madam Clara's memory, and she realized th-at shel was the two girl's mother.
