John Lepore, Chairman Howard Besnia Matilda Kersis Paul Puchek Elizabeth Gallagher John Moriarty Angelo Sotiropoulos Everett Holmes Anna Palermo Sidney Snegg Richard Whelan Ann Woods ADDRESS UF WELIIUME Philip S. Koki, President, 194-1-A 2. Mr. Andrews, members of the faculty, parents, and friends: The Class of 194-1-A extends to you a most cordial welcome. Time, that never onward flowing of the indivisible now, has carried us to the end of another phase of life. As we pause today upon the dividing ground between two eras in our lives and look back over the varied experiences of our high school life with its buoyancy and its pleasures, its rivalries and ambitions, its duties and generous friend- ships, we can not avoid a feeling of sadness that comes with the thought of parting. But the hours of the Present are golden, and the recollection of the happy days that we have spent together will ever brighten our pathway as we press on confidently and hopefully into the Future. It is a war-torn, uncertain and a complex world which confronts the youth of today, a world which seems to us full of vicissitudes and bewilderment. Con- sequently, as we enter upon the greater field of life which lies stretched out before us, our steps, at first, will seem, perhaps, a little unsteady. But remem- bering that our equipment is good, our purpose strong, let us meet our worldly battles face to faceg for it is true that a nation looks to her schools for men and women who will raise the world a step nearer to the long sought after Utopia. Our teachers and our principal, Mr. Andrews, to whom we one and all feel so deeply and eternally grateful, we shall always remember in the pouring forth of our expressions of gratitude, and certainly our parents shall never be forgotten in the returning of thanks for the privileges they have for so long placed freely at our disposal, privileges which were purchased for us at the cost of sacrifices on their part. Only a life of highest endeavor can ever repay the debt we owe to our teachers, our principal, and our parents. And so, dear parents and friends, we are indeed proud to speak the words that carry with them a cordial and a grateful welcome. i243 I CLASS HISTUHY 1941-I-l Mary Mahoney, Class Historian, 1941-A In accordance with our Town Meeting regulations the Class of 194-1-A has assembled on this Class Day to pay due respect to the final administration of its affairs as a Senior group. This record, compiled from appropriate sources, will serve as a chronicle to be registered in the annals of Time, in a small measure it may convey our esteem for the democratic principles which have governed the actions of the student body. Comparatively small in number, yet possessing stout fortitude, we were offered a wealth of opportunity within these walls. Bound by a firm resolution to make an envi- able history, a collective reputation as well as personal attainment was a much sought after destination. Firmly believing in cooperative association, a liberal government was established and so began the construction of 'cOur Town. This formative year was made noteworthy by the Blackfriars' hilarious pres- entation of 66Love-in-a-Mist, and by the Euterpeans' rendition of the operetta, G'The Mikado. Our first athletic laurels were acclaimed in 1937 by the capture of the inter- high titles in football and outdoor track. Not to be outdone, the girls' varsity division romped the court in a successful campaign for the basketball cham- pionship. A grim shadow befell our little town with the passing of Dr. Albert C. Erick- son and Miss Grace M. Lombard, two most worthy and lovable characters in our faculty. Many new adventurers from various junior schools were adopted into Com- merce High at mid-year and were soon banded together according to the cus- toms of our community. A unity of ideals furthered our success as the govern- ing body assembled for the inauguration of our administrators for the second year. A most democratic system of election was held as the citizens cast their ballots for the respective offices. The selected officers in the executive branch were: President, Philip Kokig Vice-President, Frances Dunn, Secretary, Albina Pietrowiczg and Treasurer, Albert Dupsha. Dramatic and musical performances were highlighted by the Blackfriars' offering of Jane Eyre, as well as by the Euterpean Society's portrayal of the comic opera uPatience. i25l Among the most treasured of our possessions is the Biggest News Trophy awarded us for journalistic attainment. For such supremacy in the art of writ- ing we justly heralded this honor, and proudly placed the plaque in our town hall. The Town's reputation was once more enhanced by the fact that we again became the proud recipients of the Girls' and Boys' inter-high basketball cham- pionships. Time passes, and, along with it, faculty members Miss Florence N. Flagg and Miss Jane G. Waite journeyed on to their eternal reward. Sincerity and consideration were the virtues that merited our respect for them. They have left us, but their spirit lives on forever. Our Town grows. A better organization of standards could not be imagined as we ventured on to our Junior year. Activities became plentiful as various clubs were enthusiastically attended, while praise-worthy sportsmanship pre- dominated in both scholastic and athletic rivalry. In our club organizations the following '41-Als served as presidents: Howard Besnia of the Biology Club, Birgit Hellberg of the Bumble Bees, Walter Bu- rokas of the Chemistry Club, and George Danielian of the Table Tennis Club. The polls were again made a highlight event as the votes tallied the following results: President, Philip Kokig Vice-President, Mary Mahoney, Secretary, Martha Rosenbuschg and Treasurer, Howard Besnia. Glamour invited our interest this year as scores attended the Britomart Promenade which was a most enjoyable social affair. On the stage, a tremendous ovation resulted from the portrayal of First Lady, in which Richard Whelan won distinction, and the comic opera Chimes of Normandy. Scholastic endeavor was brought into the limelight as the highest All American Award was adjudged to our Commerce Mercury. This fact we justly accentuate as a tribute to those who aided in obtaining it. Competition dis- ciplined a hard-fought contest, but we again managed to deserve our second Big News Trophy. May it be recorded also that this scroll bears the names of Eleanor Torpey and Demetre Steffon whose participation was most commendable. Everlasting in our memory will be the delightful picnic held at the Weirs in New Hampshire at which some 850 Commercites enjoyed a brief holiday. Fea- tured entertainment included dancing, bowling, swimming, boating and num- erous other pastimes. The sports circles made a clean sweep of the '39 season as Captain Mason Flagg led his golf team to a victorious outcome. Within these championship brackets were also the cross-country and track teams. Captain John fRedJ Leary cut the ice in the hockey rinks to tally a smashing triumph. Football U61 and basketball crashed the stubborn defense of the rivals to ring up two more inter-high titles. The girls, furthermore, made their contribution by earning the basketball and field hockey honors. We paused once more in our strides of progress, to pay our respects in mem- ory of two esteemed teachers, Miss Pauline A. Smith and Mr. Charles H. Jordan, whose understanding for every student's concern made them most dear to us all. Now, firm and well-rooted within a celestial tower, the Class of '4-1-A made its journey on to new heights. Campaigns were instituted, nominations made, and, with all parties participating, the ballot boxes for the final voting session were filled. President Philip Koki, a third term candidate, after forceful opposition, suc- ceeded in maintaining command. The Vice-President's position was capably filled by Eleanor Torpey for whose services we are indeed appreciative. Secre- tary Martha Rosenbusch favored us with a second term in office, and Noriar Pahigian commendably fulfilled his obligations in the Treasurer's capacity. Individual awards were duly celebrated as Philip Koki laid claim to fourth place at the Colby Oratorical Contest. Then, too, the Horace Mann Scholar roll, including the names of Philip Koki, Irene Plucinski, Louise Reardon, Ruth Sallstrom, Mildred Slauenwhite, Mae Teikari and Eleanor Torpey, added a scholastic glory to our history. More championships illuminated our field of glory as the baseball team won the season's pennant, the cross-country harriers and the track team blazed in successful campaigns, and the girls, basketball champions held their first-rate position. The honor list for outstanding players emphasizes the services of football's co-captains Milton Lawrey and John Kleiza, the former being a letterman in track as well, and the latter receiving all-city guard distinction. Witlnn this field of activity, Thomas McGrath made his debut in basketball and football. The Commerce hill and dalers' well-balanced team also raced to win the Knights of Columbus Trophy. We trace back again into the business section and make record of Mae Tei- kari as Editor-in-chief of our all-around school paper. The Blackfriars' performance of The Barrettsw st1'uck a high note in dra- matics as the critics applauded its sparkle and freshness. Instructors Grace M. Ellis and Francis X. Curley shared with us the joys and sorrows of our youth until they themselves were called to rest. Noble in char- acter, sincere in heart, they were loved by all who knew them. The Town has now become incorporated into the unity which we struggled to create. Ahead lies new ground to conquer, new fields to explore, and high ideals to fulfill. Let us then march on with an incentive to make new ambitions a reality. f27l CLASS IIB!-ITIIJN l94l-I-I Donald Nelson, Class Orator, 194-l-A We, the Class of 194-1-A, meet for our last oilicial gath- ering. Tomorrow we separate and go into the world to take our places as individuals, some as factory workers, some as farmers, some as business men, and still others, as students in schools of higher learning. It is with deep regret that we must part, for as a group we have believed in high standards and have represented all that America stands for. In going out into the world, we must defend these standards which our teachers have so earnestly endeavored to impress upon us. Do you realize that one person in this small group can change the entire destiny of the United States? This sounds unbelievable, but in America it has been a reality many times. When Washington consented to command the Revolutionary Army, he changed the entire course of what is now the United States. Without Washington's aid, there is little doubt but that we should still be English subjects and be engaged now in defending England as one of her colonies. Lincoln, too, changed the destiny of this nation. In his firmness in suppress- ing the secession of the Southern States, he succeeded in preserving the unity of the country, and also freed many of our brethren who became leaders in the world. Many of us, though, will not become Lincolns or Washingtons, but will be just other members of a labor party, a political party, a church congregation, or some other organization. It is for us then to influence others with our prin- ciples rather than permit others to influence us with their 'fismsn and un- scrupulous dealings. Here in America, a large air force is very important for the preservation of Liberty. Recently in California a strike was called in an aircraft plant. Cer- tain workmen were unable to reach a satisfactory agreement. I do not know whether the employers or the employees were at fault, but I do know that such an exhibition is a disgrace to America and democracy. Had the workers or the directors of the plant's activities been given the training in Americanism which we the students of Commerce High have been fortunate to receive, I feel con- fident that the strike would have been averted. I could cite many similar situa- tions, but this is neither the time nor the place for such. In passing, however, I should like to say this: Tomorrow as you go forth into the world as future citizens, you too will have like experiences. How will you meet them? Will you permit your selfish desires to dominate your think- ing and your actions? Or will you be guided by the principles of Americanism which you have been taught at Commerce High School? Each of you is an integral part of this great country of ours. On you individually and collectively rests the destiny of this land. You must not, and you cannot, fail this imposing trust which has been placed in you-this duty which rests upon every loyal and true American to keep this great country of ours a united and peaceful nation. May you at the close of each day be able to say: 'il have run the course, I have fought a good fight, I have kept the faith, and with the help of Almighty God, this shall continue to be my goalf' U81 .1 . A --L4--H - LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT 1941-A Dorothy Mallquist, Class Testatrix, 1941-A After four full years of work and friendship, experi- ence, and pleasant associations, we, the Class of 1941-A, realizing that the time is drawing near when we shall end the happy days that we have spent at the High School of Commerce, do now make known to all our last Will and Testament. ARTICLE I To Mr. Andrews, our beloved Principal and friend, we extend our sincere thanks for what he has done for us and assure him of our deepest admiration of his wise counsel. To Mr. William J. Casey and Mr. Edward F. Tobin, our Assistant Principals, we also express our appreciation and heartfelt thanks for having so much patience with us and for making our days here at Commerce an experience long to be remembered. To our helpful and loving parents and guardians we leave our everlasting gratitude for making our education possible. ARTICLE II To those ever-loving members of the Commerce faculty who were kind enough to postpone tests when snowstorms made attendance impossible, we give thanks. Not unmindful of the many services rendered by our teachers, we make the following bequests: To Miss Treat, more patience with her Journalists who fail to bring in ads. To Miss Cruikshank, our hope that in the not distant future noiseless halls will be installed so that she may retain the attention of her classes. To Mr. Morrill, a trust fund of pennies so that he may reimburse his gum- chewing stenographers after asking them to deposit their gum in the basket. To Mr. Burnell, a booklet on Excuses and How to Cure Themf, To Mr. Gleason, a room full of automatic machines guaranteed to add cor- rectly the first time. To Mr. Dickie, a new system of mental telepathy that will relate to his pupils the fact that this is a- free country and you don't have to do anything. To Mr. Myles McAleer, our heartiest thanks for making our Class Day one of real beauty and success. I29l To Mr. Sweet, a few spare angles and circles which will aid his Geometry students in solving complex problems. To Mr. Edgar Wilson, a new set of band instruments with no sharps and fiats and with them a guaranty to produce perfect tune. To Miss Higgins, our school nurse, we leave the assurance of our lasting re- membrance of her kindly ministrations to us in time of need. ARTICLE III Furthermore, to remind future Commercites of our unselfishness and thought- fulness, the particular members of the class bequeath the following: Louise Moreschi bequeaths her experimental ability to any prospective chemist in search of a new element. Mary Mahoney leaves her fine personality to anyone who thinks she is capable of making full use of such an endowment. Marjorie Massey leaves a comb and a mirror to some miss who forgets hers. Philip Koki bequeaths his presidential dignity and leadership to Joseph Farley, his successor. Ruth Sallstrom leaves her natural wavy hair to those girls less fortunate in crossing the street on rainy days to get to building three. Noriar Pahigian, our trustworthy treasurer, leaves to the new treasurer the privilege of getting out of bed early mornings to collect class dues. Eleanor Torpey bequeaths her ability, brilliancy, and popularity to anyone worthy of such an acclaim. Donald Nelson leaves his ability in argumentation to any member of the debating societies. Nathan Wald leaves his dancing feet to any other jitterbug. Harold Gould leaves nothing, takes everything. Bessie Lea leaves a complete disclosure of her secret of how to get along with people. Leo Golden leaves his constant grin to all P. M. pupils in Room 6. Martha Rosenbusch leaves her witty remarks to some Junior seeking popularity. Herbert Stegenga leaves his beautiful tenor voice to echo throughout the halls of Commerce the praise and glory of our Alma Mater. To whom it may concern: We leave season tickets to the Olympia Theatre for those students who, on certain days, find the movies more interesting than school. ARTICLE IV To the Freshmen we leave a map which will direct them to the much-talked- about tunnel fwhich exists only in our dreamsj and a large microscope which will bring them nearer to graduation. D01 ARTICLE V To the Sophomores we leave the hope that they will consider their motto, Wise F ool, and remember that, in spite of all worries, school days are really wonderful. ARTICLE VI To the Juniors we leave our desire that they use the Class of 1941-A as a pattern to guarantee conspicuous success. The remaining members of the class, through this, our final document, will and bequeath all their ability and versatility to the lower classmen with tho' hope that these few gifts will be an inspiration to them. To this document, we, the Class of 1941-A, set our hand and seal this eleventh day of December, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundrd foftyQ ' fSignedJ Dorothy Mallquist, Testatrix Philip Koki, President of the Class of 1941-A U11 SJW? Farley, President, 1941-B Principal Andrews, members of the faculty, parents and e friends: I sincerely appreciate the honor and privilege accorded me of extending to you on behalf of the Class of 1941-B a most hearty and cordial welcome. At last the day has arrived to which we have looked forward with so much anticipation and pride and the joy we feel in our hearts today is backed by a sense of achieve- ment and hard work. We realize that this momentous occasion could never have been possible had it not been for the sacrifice, love and devotion of you our beloved parents. May we bring great honor to you in the future for the opportunities we have enjoyed through your unselishness. To you, Principal Andrews, we pledge our loyalty and devotion to your high ideals and that good citizenship will be our beacon and your wise leadership will always be a source of inspiration to us. To our Assistant Principals, Mr. Edward F. Tobin and Mr. William J. Casey, and to our teachers we express our appreciation for their cooperation and service. The training they have given us will be the foundation for our life work. And now, if you will kindly imagine the stage in the setting of a ship's ball- room, we will continue with the program. f42l CLASS HISTIIHY 1941-B Lillian Luksis Ahoy, mates! Gather 'round to hear the tales of our scholastic, athletic, and extra-curricular maneuvers on the seas of Education. Today we, as a class, pause to look back over the last four years with a strange blending of regret and satisfac- tion. Surely no class has worked harder to reach the height of attainment nor endeavored more fully to per- form duties required than the Class of 1941-B. However, all has not been usmooth sailing. We did encounter a few mild storms-notably on examination days--for our appearance on these occasions did not always add mate- rially to our intellectual reputation. But let's turn back the pages to September, 1937 when our genius was still in the bud. It was in this month that we, Freshmen, experienced the first days of our high school career and were received with malicious glee by a certain band of misguided beings, called Sophomores, who directed us to the wrong class rooms, thus succeeding in their attempt to muddle our already bewildered minds. By our adjustment to the new environment, we, the timid Freshmen, were metamorphosed into prominent athletes and social leaders even at this early stage. Although we withheld our contributions to the Biggest News Essay contest until the subsequent years, our hearts swelled with pride and joy when the High School of Commerce was awarded a trophy for the merits and efforts the students from Commerce had displayed. As Freshmen we applauded the blood-curdling presentation of ujane Eyre and the comic opera, Patience, in which our much respected upperclassmen participated. With various trials and experiences, we entered the second year of our career with a greatly augmented enrollment, due to the large number of pupils coming from the Providence Street and Grafton Street Junior High Schools. The sun of 1937 beamed down on a changed, matured class of Sophomores. We were now in the morning division and best of all we were old enough to vote. Ballots were counted with the following results: Joseph Farley, Presi- dent, Ann Brennan, Vice-President, ,lean Ingalls, Secretary, and Richard Grant, Treasurer. H31 Aided by the noteworthy contributions of Margaret Hawley and Louise Reardon, Commerce was again victorious in the Biggest News Essay contest. Again the High School of Commerce triumphed! During this semester, students, faculty members, and friends filled Tucker- man Hall and gave vigorous evidence of their approval of the Blackfriars' pres- entation of the play, 'Tirst Lady. Not to be surpassed by the former society, the Euterpeans' smooth-running, eye-filling, and ear-pleasing performance of g6The Chimes of Normandyv won loud acclaim. Our Sophomore year was concluded with the memorable school trip to the Weirs, New Hampshire. In 1939 we began our Junior year filled with determination to fulfill every expectation, to win every battle we engaged in, and to perform many feats worthy of record. The results of our second election were as follows: Robert Trainor, President, Ann Brennan, Vice-President, Martha Hyde, Secretary, and Charles Haywood, Treasurer. Our sympathy being so great for Classical, who was diligently struggling in the Biggest News Essay contest, we played the role of the Good Samaritan, withdrew our forces, and yielded to the foe for 1939. Joyce Ott, David Roche, and Stanley Benson effectively demonstrated their athletic prowess as they won renown as leaders of various athletic teams. The Blackfriars' presentation, The Barretts, revealed the Bette Davis of Commerce in the person of Elaine Zall, who captured the hearts of the audi- ence with her magnificent portrayal of Elizabeth Barrett. This year, the Euterpeans' operetta, Pirates of Penzance, was enthusiasti- cally applauded by the student body. In our history the annual Memorial Day exercises stand out as an important event. The patriotic interest shown in song, speeches, and applause left an impression on our memory which time will not wear away. June 8, 1940 proved to be a big day when more than 800 turned out for the annual school picnic which was held at Old Orchard Beach. We will never forget that day, jammed with fun and excitement from sunrise to sunset. The long awaited Senior year at last arrived and Joseph Farley was elected President, Ann Brennan, Vice-President, Jean Ingalls, Secretary, and Anthony Cozzolino, Treasurer. This our last year, we took a prominent part in social affairs and most of us shone at receptions and banquetsr, in fact, we became so thoroughly imbued with the spirit of the times that we had several cases of chocolate dyspepsia, bouillon on the brain, and daggers at the heart. E441 Those who participated in the parade of Horace Mann scholars are: Isabel Calusdian, Myrtle Cinsky, Ann Davidson, Ruth Dirsa, Stella Gill, Natalie Guerin, Janet Gutkowski, Margaret Hawley, Milton Javery, Minnie Kramer, Lillian Luksis, Mary Patierno, Elvira Paulauskas, Louise Reardon, Jacqueline Rene, Lillian Rudner, Esther Sivowitz, and Shirley Soubel. The Mercury, led by Lillian Luksis and supported by an extremely efficient stalf, won All-American honors and was adjudged the best New England school newspaper by Boston Universityis lnterscholastic Press Association. The outstanding athletes this year were: Elsie Toomey, Ida Kramer, Hedwig Jastremska, Nicholas Andrews, Stanley Benson, and David Roche. '4The Mikado, presented by the Euterpeans, was a huge success. Soon the Blackfriars will produce the comedy, 4'Seventeen. Betty Alu, Muriel Cotton and Elaine Zall will represent our class. In June we shall bid adieu to our good ship, Alma Mater, that has so stoutly borne us for four long years. But we shall again don our nautical outfits and go sailing on a new adventure and ride the crests of a great career. This time, alone. Let us sail forth bravely and nobly, our hearts filled and thrilled with earnest and noble purpose, trusting that whatever our lots may be, we, each and all, may be identified with what is noble and good. E451 CLASS IIBATIIIN 1941-B ONCE MORE Vazhen Babigian, Class Orator, 1941-B One minute before eleven o'clock on the morning of November eleventh 1918, the long battlefield shook with the deafening roar of the cannon, the bursting of bombs, and the staccato of the machine guns. One minute after this hour, a stillness of death shrouded the same scene. The Armistice with Germany, which had been signed earlier that morning, went into effect. Delegates from the allied and central powers had met and signed a peace pact that was to make the world safe for democracy. But was this armistice a success? Did it make for safety in the crude huts of Ethiopia when the Italian bombers roared overhead? Did this armistice make for security in Spain? Do the Chinese en- joy the blessings of peace as death is being hurled from the sky? And do the millions of Czechs and Albanians relish the idea of having a foreign nation rule the land which they cherish? Let the past rise before you! Hear the roar and shriek of shells! See soldiers being killed like flies! The news comes that they are dead, but they are at peace. Must peace come only from death? Today Germany, which was once a defeated and suppressed nation, is a mighty world power and has taken the fatal step which has made all Europe a bloody battlefield. Countless thousands are suffering and many more are being sent to their death. One man who believes he has a foolproof plan is trying to conquer the world. But as Robert Burns said in his poem To a Mousef' 'The best laid schemes of mice and men-Gang aft agley, and that is exactly what is going to happen. We pay homage to those men who sacrificed their lives some twenty odd years ago, in the belief that they were to perish in a war that was to end all wars. They died in order to exterminate from the face of the earth that curse, that loathsome monster, war. But was this supreme sacrifice worthwhile? Armed conflict between nations is in direct opposition to the doctrines of humanity. Man was not created to be riddled by machine gun bullets, or shattered by bombs, or shredded on barbed wire. We prefer to believe that all men are created equal and have certain inalienable rights-life, liberty 11461 and the pursuit of happiness. Certainly war does not contain any of these privileges. We know that for the past 4 or 5 years there have been enough insults and incidents to start a half a dozen major wars. But the various nations have restrained themselves. Were they afraid? Did they lack men and money? No, the reason was that they used Common Sense. They knew that the differ- ences between nations should not be settled by armed conflict, but by' intelli- gent reasoning. We, the younger generation, do not want war and certainly those who have seen action do not want war. However, we must defend ourselves, for the cowardly dictators of Europe, who lurk behind a shadow of feigned patriotism, are trying to enslave the whole world. We of this generation are faced by a tremendous task, and we realize that our duties are unusual. In my opinion the best way to serve our country at this time is to continue our education. Some of us have the idea that it is more patriotic to work in a shipyard or join one of our country's armed forces than to go to college. Such a decision would be unfortunate. We must have well- educated and intelligent citizens who have sound judgment in dealing with the diliicult problems of today. It is our patriotic duty to continue our education, unless and until we are called, so that we will be prepared for the greatest usefulness to our country. A war 3,000 miles away is affecting our country, a country that desires to live in perfect harmony with its neighbors. The war has caused us to launch a large defense program in order to protect our homes from an aggressive power. Why is it possible for maniacal dictators to do all this? Why is it possible for them to put fear and hatred. into the hearts of men? How long will this earth remain in such a turmoil and uproar? It must not be, for the world cannot turn its back on Him who died upon the cross to teach the eternal lesson . . . the brotherhood of man and the principle of peace. f47l LAST WILL I-INII TESTAMENT 1941-B Louise Reardon WE, the Class of 1941-B, having no further use for nu- merous talents and abilities that have made this cruise a pleasant one, do bequeath said gifts to those who have been our teachers and companions on this four year jour- ney, in the hope that they will treasure them as souvenirs of our happy days together. Joe Farley leaves any ambitions he may ever have had of becoming President of the U. S., to anyone who wants them, for after being president of his class for a year, Joe has only sympathy for Mr. Roosevelt. Elvira Paulaskas leaves her talented arrangement of Love in Bloom to any violinist who hopes to become a second J ack Benny. Ruth Tymosko leaves the presidency of the Bumble Bees to anyone who can inform us whether the club is so called because the members are busy as bees doing good work, or whether they are busy buzzing about people and things in general. Sidney Plotkin leaves a moving picture camera to Mr. Morrill so that Mr. Morrill can get some action pictures of Elnora Riendeau attacking a wad of gum. Ann Brennan, vice-president of our class, leaves a copy of Dale Carnegie's book How to Win Friends and Influence People to anyone who hopes to achieve the popularity that Ann has had during her high school career. Ruth Gilbert leaves her bookkeeping Wizardry to some sophomore who just doesn't get it. Joyce Ott, our class vocalist, has unkindly refused my request that she leave her beautiful soprano voice to someone, for she believes she will need it in the career she hopes to carve for herself. Shirley Beech leaves her Office Practice machine to anyone who wants to know the quickest way to get old and gray. Vivian Rumrill leaves her brown eyes to any other blonde in the school who has the courage to defy the tradition that blue eyes are an absolute necessity with blond hair. Elias Barsoum leaves his store of general information on any subject to the teachers of the school who cannot afford to buy an encyclopedia. Elena Ricardi leaves her love of crisp., fresh hair ribbons to a Freshman girl, so the ribbon counters of the city stores will not become bankrupt if Elena leaves hair hows behind when she takes on the dignity becoming to a graduate. H81 Dorothy Rice leaves her sunny disposition to anyone who believes it's a blue., blue world. Lois Ljunberg leaves her winning smile to one whose ambition it is to pose for tooth paste adds in popular magazines. Helen Pomocka leaves the issue of the school paper from a western state which has a front page picture of eight bathing beauties, to the next exchange editor of the Mercury in the hope that, whoever she is, she will become as popular with the boys as Helen has by merely keeping this picture in her possession. John Kosakowski leaves a larger soap box to Mr. Stickney, so he will be able to see all the pupils in the back of the room. To any track team candidate who needs swiftness in the hundred yard dash, Margaret Hawley leaves the speed she acquired in her daily flight down the 70 floor corridor to reach the door of her homeroom before Mr. Sampson can close it. Catherine Pisarski leaves her thoughtfulness for others to the inconsiderate individuals who believe the quickest way to reach the top of the stairs is to tramp all over everyone else. Lillian Rudner leaves her report card to some of her disillusioned Senior classmates who believe that A's exist only in alphabet soup. Donald Burns leaves his look of sweet innocence to any boy who ever hopes to convince a teacher that he really is a well-behaved lad in spite of the fact that he does talk all through every class. Catherine Sandy leaves her membership in practically every club in the school fexcluding the Boy's Assembly Debating Societyj to any person who does all her homework at home, and can afford to spend registration period listening to Mr. Andrews' broadcast of club notices instead of trying to cram two hours' study into ten minutes. Mary Patierno leaves the cold chills she gets on type days in stenography class to any lower classmen who have to struggle over a typewriter on a blazing hot day, in the hope that her cold chills will help to soothe their fevered brows. Shirley Perry leaves her stylish clothes and her chic way of wearing them to any girl who wants the best remedy for overcoming self-consciousness. Alice Vayo leaves her long curly eyelashes to those who have to depend on eyelash curlers to help them attain eye beauty. Shirley Dahlquist leaves her ever-ready smile to the first-half Seniors, for when their final marks come out, they will be able to use an extra smile. Irene Arnberg leaves her grace in dancing to those clumsy individuals who dance, not only on the dance floor, but all over the feet of their partners. James Castaldi leaves his efficient, business-like manner to Miss Carrigan, so she can lend it to the students when they are sent out to be interviewed for jobs. U91 Vazhen Babigian leaves his silver tongue which can sway audiences, make them laugh and cry, to those unfortunate individuals who lose all powers of speech when called upon to address a gathering. Louise Sahagian leaves her beautiful big, brown eyes, to anyone who can flutter them in the bewitching way that Louise can. John Polanik leaves his post as treasurer of the U. S. History Club to anyone who has such a desire to get his hands on the money of the public as .lohn has. Frances Powers leaves her alarm clock to our salesmanship teacher Mr. Powers, for she knows she will never again need it to help her get to school at 7:30 to attend one of Mr. Powers' enjoyable before-school demonstration rehearsals. Donald Campbell leaves his changeable voice to someone who wants to make his fortune doing imitations on the radio. Anne Lehtinen leaves a measure of peace to the merchants of the city, for she will not dog their footsteps any longer trying to bully them into taking ads with the Mercury. Girard Pahigian leaves his place as Sports Editor of the Mercury to a young innocent who believes that a sports editor need only attend the games of the school to get an MA in Journalism. Janet Mochnacz leaves her expertness in shorthand to any lower classman who intends to take stenography through five and six, for anyone doing so will surely meet Mr. Morrill somewhere along the line, and then .lanet's speed and accuracy will certainly come in handy. Bob Trainor leaves his charming smile to any boy who can use it to such good advantage as Bob has among the members of the gentler sex. Oliver Briggs leaves his position on the circulation staff of the Mercury to anyone who has the self-control to fill forty baskets with goodies on Mercury treat days and still not eat so much that he cannot enjoy the treat in his homeroom a short while later. Lillian Luksis leaves a pair of football shoulder pads to the next editor of the Mercury so her successor's shoulders will be wide enough to carry the burden that goes along with this honored position. y George Pilson leaves his natural curly hair to those unfortunate girls whose hair tends to depart from its usual curly condition and go back to its stringy ways when crossing between buildings one and two on days when rain clouds darken the horizon. I leave the honor of being Class Testatrix to the next person who wishes to run the risk of losing all her friends by writing this testament. To our Principal, Mr. Andrews, we all leave our never-ending gratitude for the patience and kindness with which he has helped us through our difficulties, E501 and for the helping hand that has always been extended to us whenever we were in need of it. To the assistant principals, Mr. Casey and Mr. Tobin, and to all our teachers, we leave our sincere thanks for the time and effort spent in preparing us for our plunge into the world of business. To our school, dear old Commerce High, we leave our earnest promise to uphold the standards upon which her success depends, and to make ourselves good citizens and upright members of society, so she may become as proud of us as we are of her. Having bestowed all our personal possessions which may be of help to our successors, we the Class of 1941-B, set our hand and seal in the presence of witnesses, on this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and forty-one.
