One of the oldest and most enioyed groups on the campus is the Chess Club. Everyone interested in the game, from novices to experts, had an opportunity to improve his game under the expert guidance of the club's faculty adviser, Mr. Peckham. The beginners learned the fundamentals of this oldest of all games, while the more experienced boys studied the intricacies of strategy and more complicated offensive and defensive maneuvers. JY 5' This year the Dramatic Club enloyed a hectic but highly successful season In their garret on top of Walker they and a bevy of femmes fatales from Wachu sett Regional High School rehearsed two comedies for presentation on the boards of Warner Memorial Theater The Male Animal the Fall produc tion starred Mark Slade as an English professor in a small mid western university who tried to present a fascist letter to his classes This got him into considerable difficulties with the college officials, Dick Seville and Gene Seuss. The complications in the married life of the young teacher try ing to keep his old football hero rival, Ivan Weinger, away from his wife, Beth Hull, kept the audience laughing at every line Sandra Smith, Penny Draw bridge, Mike Risman, and Gus Lmney contributed fine character vignettes. The Spring presentation Snafu was a riotous comedy dealing with the complications of a returning veteran Charles Dean after two years of war The difficulty is that the sixteen year old veteran has been accused of breaking into the dormitories of a girls school in town This was actually done by his buddy Mike Risman who was chasing a young college reporter Beth Hull The whole matter is brought to a happy conclusion, but not before the veteran's parents, Steve Keyes and Sandra Smith, become thoroughly confused. Also worthy of laurels for their fine per formances were Penny Drawbrldge, Ray Bucci, Dick Seville, and Bob Stone. The stage crew, headed by Pat Murphy and Dave Rubenstein, did an excellent job of building and lighting the sets. Both plays were ably directed by Mr. Elmore, the club's faculty ad- viser. GORDON PAUL BASSETT HOOPER CORSON KEOHANE This year the varsity swimming team captalned by Mel Gordon had a more successful season than has been seen in quite a while on the Hilltop The team was coached by Mr Charles Stephens who did a remarkably good 'ob season against Mt Hermon Although suffering a 34 43 defeat the Hilltoppers were encouraged by the good show ings made by several of th more inexperienced boys The team then dropped meets to Deerfield Gardner High and powerful Williston On February 8th the swimmers won their first meet of the season by down ing Huntington 45 30 The Crimson and Black captured seven out of nine first places including double victories by Mel Gordon and Paul OConnelI Winning their second meet the Academy beat Dean 45 32 The team did well and most of the points were scored by Gordon OConnelI and Gil bert On the 25th the mermen swam against the M I T frosh and Moses . . , On January 'l4th the team opened its Ross Gilbert, as usual, won the diving. Led by Co-Captains Leo Downey and Whitey Wotruba, it includes such luminaries as Cole Gaudet, Jack Hanlon, Fran McDonald, and Ron Spakauskas. Under the expert coaching of Mr. Stephens and Mr. Mika, this will be one ofthe best years a Worcester Academy track team ever had. ln their opening meet, the Hilltoppers swamped a strong Wilbraham squad, 73-44. The top scorer was Wotruba, win- ning the high hurdles, the javelin, and the pole vault. Downey won the shot put and the discus and took a second nn the Spring Track iavelin. Hanlon took the 'IOO-yard dash and the broad jump in addition to a second in the 220. The mile was taken by Tom Charest, while Bob Corson, Hank Keohane, and Spakauskas tied for first in the high jump. Gaudet captured the 880 and placed second in the quarter-mile. Other point winners included Ernie Gulla, Jerry Harper, Fran McDonald, and Jack Mc- Govern. The spring squad had plenty of depth, something which was sorely lacking during the winter. Golf This year's golf team promises to be one of the schools best. Although the boys were hampered early in the season by not being able to practice, they showed well in their first two matches. On April 'l8th, they tied Tabor Academy, 4V2-Alfi, at the Juniper Hill course. Playing away, they beat the University of Massachusetts Freshmen, 495-215, on April 25th. The number one and two players are Jay Dolan and Dave Molloy, both of whom have been playing on the varsity for several years. Dana Kellenberger and Red Day occupy the next positions, with Jerry Cohen and Milt Frem com- pleting the first team. However, there are several boys who are giving this squad some stiff competition.
