Mr. Eben T. Fogg once more proticiently directed the forty song- sters from his podium. The talented Mrs. Rader furnished the accompaniment, which contributed greatly to the success of the club. On their first appearance at the Fall Term Dinner. a specialty group of negro spirituals was presented. A heart-warming Christmas program was given on the lollowing evening. The Bancroft and Academy Glee Clubs combined to produce the highlight of the strenuous year. The chorus. eighty voices strong. was the feature ol this superbly produced concert. The solos rendered by Howard Ecker, Michael Labriola, and William Durkin, supported by the chorus, were re- ceived with great enthusiasm at the Winter Term Dinner. Selections at the Baccalaureate service and at Com- mencement concluded a highly successful year. At an early meeting. officers were elected as fol- lows: Preston Doane, President: William Teachout, Vice-President: and Donald Frey, Secretary- Treasurer. Mr. William Stone was faculty adviser to the club. The Varsity Club sponsored and conducted the football rallies, sent delegates to meet the visiting teams, and assisted in maintaining order during games and meets. The social events began with a splash party on Ianuary 15th. This was followed later in the year by an informal dance and a smoker. May the club, in the future, continue to be in- strumental in fostering school spirit. Al- though this record may seem unimpressive. bad luck played a large part in defeats at the hands of Nichols Iunior College, Wilbraham, Williston, and Monson. On October Sth. the soccermen inaugurated the season with an impressive 5 to 0 win over Lawrence Academy at Gaskill Field. Bill Teach- out, Chet Caswell, and Bill Newburn played lead- ing roles in this win. Gloom swept over the boys as they dropped a 4 to 2 heartbreaker to Nichols Iunior College. In an uphill struggle, goals by Newburn, the ag- gressive center half, and Barry Wartenberg knotted the score at two-all in the second period. Then costly penalty kicks proved to be the decid- ing factor of the game. On the following Wednesday at home, great playing by Molder, Newburn, Scott Liungberg, and Teachout accounted for the 4 to 1 victory over Monson. The W. A. booters encountered the Brown Freshmen in a very close contest, in which the Brown eleven won by the slender margin of 2 to l. Scott Liungberg, Al Roig, Chet Caswell, Dedeo Cataldi, and Ben Carr starred for the losers. On October 20 and 23. the W. A. soccermen were handed close defeats by Wilbraham and Williston, although the Hilltoppers greatly out- played their opponents. Looking for their first win since Oct. 13, the Academy kickers traveled to Monson, only to be defeated in an overtime game, 4 to 3. Exceptional team play was displayed by Ben Carr, Ioe Molder, Marcello da Cunha, and the reliables, Newburn and Teachout. The W. A. booters then bounced back to defeat Suffield Academy, l to 0, the following week. On November 6th, the W. A. team defeated Tilton Academy, l to 0. Chet Caswell scored the lone goal. The team played a great game, and beat one of the strongest teams that they en- countered during the season. The soccer team, unable to play its full schedule of eleven games, the last two having been can- celled, ended its season with the Tilton contest. Chet Caswell was the high scorer with six goals, followed by Newburn with four, and Scott Liungberg with three. Ted MacDonald, Warten- berg, and Woody Goss also hit the scoring column with one apiece.
