Dances, skits, annual-signing, caroling, and masquerade parties, hay rides, council workshops—all activities of 75- 76 Student Council. The council, powered by Tina Kilcoin, president; Mark Bittner, vice-president; and Cindy Nielson, secretary-treasurer, met monthly to discuss school issues, plan up-coming activities, and organize the student government of W. H. S. The council, benefitting from the week-long summer Student Council Leadership Workshop attended by seven members, and being guided by advisor Mr. Andree, brought an organized meeting procedure to W. H. S. , and set up a program that will set the pace for future student government. CARRIE FAYE MORAN BRIAN ALAN BIES KATHY C. CUMMINS 11 May 12 Ends WHS Life for Seniors Graduation day came for the 1976 class of Woonsocket High School on May 12, 1976 at 8:00 p.m. in the Armory. Cindy Nielson and Teresa Zimmerman spoke on behalf of the seniors, and the WHS band and chorus provided entertainment for the solemn occasion. This year the Dzie Award, presented to the highest ranking senior boy and girl, went to Keith Kluksdahl and Cindy Nielson. The Anna Hollister Loans were presented to Tina Kilcoin, Tammy Rogers, Kathy Berg, and Greg Sonne. Also awarded this year was a new scholarship available for stu- dents attending the University of South Dakota. This scholarship, founded by the Bollingers, was granted to Mary Beth Hinker. Diplomas were presented by Mr. Andree and farewells were said to the class of 1976. J U The juniors had a very busy year. The main event for them was the Prom. In order to raise money they sold magazines, held bingos, and had paper drives. Another of the junior class responsibilities was pro- viding the skit for coronation. H. S. Rather, unknowingly at first, they soon adapted to the busy routine of high school life. However, they did not hide their talents. Sports, drama and other organizations in the high school benefitted from the many skills held by the freshmen class of Woon- socket High School. Musical Talents Enter Contests CONTESTANTS ATTEND CONTEST IN LAKE ANDES: Chris Roti and Paula Moran-II, Jeff Snedaker-II, Jeff Davis-IIIf Lisa Alexander and Vicky Andersen-I, Polly Parker and Jane Brosnan-II, Lisa Swenson and Carolyn Thompson-II, Sheri Kroell-II, Marcia Waddington-II, Lori Trudeau-III, accompanists: Lori Maakestad, Cyd Nielson, and Mrs. Duncan, Piano solos: Cyd Nielson-Il, Paula Senska-II. 32 Competing in the 1976 South Dakota State Wrestling Tournament in Huron on February 20-21, were Larry Murtha (138), senior; and Jon Farris (126), junior. Both boys did an excellent job and made Woonsocket High School proud. Outstanding Athletes Tammy Rogers won the WHS Bicenten- nial Senior Contest with her own Bi- centennial Minute . This told of some event during May of 1976, related to America's Revolution. She then went on to become one of the six state final- ists of which two were chosen to attend a Bicentennial Senior Meeting in Virginia. and Bicentennial Senior Finalist Jeff VanLeur and Jerry Ball did an excellent job this year. Jeff was named to the A11-State Football Team, All-Conference Football Team, and All-Conference Basketball Team. Jerry received honorable mention on the All-State Football Team and was named to the A11-Conference Football Team and All-Con- ference Basketball Team. Also receiving All-Conference Football honorable mention were Larry Murtha, Mark Bittner, Greg Sonne, Jim Clayton, and Trent Foos. Receiving All-Conference Basketball honorable mention were Jim Clayton and Mark Bittner. 33 1976 Boys and Girls State Dele- gates were chosen this spring by the American Legion and American Legion Auxilary. Chosen for Boys State were Mark Bollinger and Jeff Davis. These two boys will attend the session held at Aberdeen on the campus of Northern State College for the week May 30- June 5. Attending Dakota Wesleyan University for Girls State held during the same week, will be Judy Fredrichs. Her alternate is Suzie Steichen. During this week, both boys and girls will be learning the ways of the government. Boys Girls Staters and Betty Crocker Awards Cindy Nielson, scoring the highest on a test open to all senior girls, was named the Betty Crocker Homemaker for Woonsocket High School. Cindy was then considered for the state title. Cindy Nielson, being one of the two highest all-round winners, was eligible for a $400 scholarship to Northwest College of Business. She placed first in business ma- chines and typing II. She also received a fourth place in clerical apptitude. Carrie Moran won fourth place in typing II, Tina Kilcoin placed in front of her, receiving third. Lori Trudeau competed in the typing I division, re- ceiving fourth place. Kay McDowall received a fourth also in clerical aptitude. Overall, the girls placed second in the contest. Business- Norman Kluksdahl, junior, competed in the 23rd Annual Mathematics Contest held in Aberdeen. He placed first in the geometry division, being the highest scorer on the test. and Essay Contest Winners Math- Judy Fredrichs was the winner of the Intercounty Electric Essay Contest. She received an a 11-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. with the winners from the other areas. Winning the Americanism Essay Contest were, in Division I, Lenna Steichen, freshmen, and in Division II, Suzie Steichen, junior. Lenna later won on the District level. Sweetheart Ball Royalty MISS SWEETHEART - MR. IRRESISTABLE Lori Trudeau, chosen by the FFA members, and Dennis Hiemsta, chosen by the FHA members, reigned over the 1976 Sweetheart's Ball. This social event was sponsored by the FFA and FHA clubs of WHS. It was held March 20, 1976 in the National Guard Armory. Cindy Nielsen- Miss Woonsocket MISS HOLIDAY CONTESTANT Cindy Nielson was chosen to represent Woonsocket High School in the Annual Holiday Tournament held in the Huron Arena. She was elected from a field of junior and senior girls by the student body. Girls from all over Central South Dakota partici- pated. 36 Honor Society Scholarship, service, leadership, and character are the qualities displayed by members of the National Honor Society, The NHS sent out letters of commendation to those students earning all A's and having A averages. At the end of the year, the older members, Mary Hinker, president; Teresa Zimmerman, vice-president; Keith Kluksdahl, secretary; Hank Kogel, treasurer; and Cindy Nielson, reporter; initi- ated the new members. These were Tammy Rogers, Mark Bollinger, Kandy Schmiedt, Sheri Kroell, Norman Kluksdahl, Vicky Andersen, and Debie Taylor. National Honor Society and DAR Daughters of the Ameri- can Revolution opened this award to senior boys as well as girls this year. Tammy Rogers was se- lected by a faculty vote. She then represented Sanborn County in further competition. Princess Kathy and Chief Jeff Reign in 1975 Homecoming HOMECOMING CANDIDATES for the 1975 Coronation were Tammy Rogers, Cindy Nielson, Kathy Cummins, Jeff VanLeur, Mark Bittner, and Brian Bies. (Above): Tammy Rogers and Brian Bies. (To The Right): Cindy Nielson and Mark Bittner. The 24th Annual WHS Homecoming started on Thurs- day, September 11 at 8:00 p. m. with Coronation. Kathy Cummins and Jeff Van Leur were crowned by Student Council President Tina Kilcoin. Mrs. Karen Christopherson entertained the Royalty with the hits Touch Me In the Morning and The Way We Were . A pep rally and the burning of the W” followed, mu- sic provided by the Pep Band. On Friday, the Senior Class took honors in Float Com- petition with their version of Hie Bluejays Are Com- ing . That night the Redmen defeated the Hitchcock Bluejays 20-12, and celebrated their victory at the i dance following the game. The group Hot Chocolate provided entertainment for students from 10:00 until 1:00. Bringing to a close the 1975 Ki-Yi Days was the Alumni Banquet on Saturday evening in the Parish Hall. Carnival CARNIVAL CANDIDATES: Freshmen represent- atives were Patti Schabot and Ed Wolter, for the Juniors were Suzie Steichen and Trent Foos, and for the Seniors were Kori Kappel and Dennis Hiemstra. The Sophomores took top honors for the second consecutive year of their high school days. By raising $721.16, the Sophomores had the privilege of seeing their candidates, Chris Roti and Jeff Snedeker, crowned on November 1, 1975 at the WHS Carnival. The Freshmen, still getting used to high school, earned $539. 25 for first runner-up. The Juniors took second run- ner-up with $271. 58, while the Seniors had to settle for last place with a total of $125. 70. c a n d i d a t e s Class of 78 Still Reign 41 On May 1, 1976 the juniors sponsored the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. The Banquet began at 7:00 P.M. , being dedicated to Jeff Bockomey, who was ill at the time. The Armory' was decorated in pastel colors and filled with the sound of the Eagle's hit song, We Wish You Peace , re-done by the band, Meadowlark.
