From these three candidates the faculty chose Mary Allen Paulson to represent Woonsocket High School as the DAR Representative. Miss Paulson was chosen on basis of dependability, leadership, service and patriotism. Girls' and Boys' State Representative Mary Lou Emerson was chosen by the Ladies' Auxiliary as Girls' Stater for Woonsocket High School. She attend- ed the Girls' State Convention at Mitchell the first week in June. Boys State Representative, sponsor- ed and selected by American Legion Post 29, was Aubrey Fisher. During the Sophomore year, officers were: President, Ronald Marsh; Vice-President, Thomas Steichen; Secretary-Treasurer, Richard Parsons, Fred Meier was class adviser. Marlene Riesland transferred to Butte, Montana during this year. Junior Class officers were: President, Mary Lou Emerson; Vice-President, Delvin Feistner; Secretary-Treasurer, Margy Brewster. That year Margy Brewster and Thomas Steichen were crowned Carnival King and Queen of 1953. The class sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom using the theme of Moonlight and Roses. Mrs. Ella Korthals was the class adviser. Boys' Stater was Aubrey Fisher and Girls’ Stater was Mary Lou Emerson. Shirley Dechow transferred to Alpena at the close of this year. In their Senior year, the class elected the following officers: President, Aubrey Fisher; Vice-President, Ronald Goeman; Secretary-Treasurer, Ronald Marsh. Richard Parsons was student body President. Superintendent F. E. Fisher was the Senior Class adviser. Penny Pierce transferred from Sioux Falls and Josephine Atkins entered WHS from Wessington Springs. This brought the total number of Seniors to twenty-four. Margy Brewster and Richard Parsons reigned as Princess and Chief of Ki Yi Day. Attend- ants were Penny Pierce, Mary Lou Emerson, Aubrey Fisher and Ronald Marsh. Carnival royalty candidate were Mary Allen Paulson and Ronald Goeman. Mary Lou Emerson and Tom Steichen were cheerleaders. Senior boys taking part in athletics were Aubrey Fisher, Ronald Goeman, Ronald Marsh, Richard Parsons, William Schroeder and Hubert Scott. Margy Brewster was a member of the Girls Sextet for two years. Janice Heaton was accompanist for large and small music ensembles. Music soloists included Janice Heaton, Josephine Atkins, Bob Schutt, William Schroeder and Aubrey Fisher. Students entering district declam contests were Wanda Rumelhart, Aubrey Fisher, William Schroeder and Donald Olinger. Hi-Life editor was Mary Allen Paulson. Mary Lou Emerson edited the Redmen annual. Mary Allen Paulson also represented WHS as DAR candidate. The class was greatly saddened by the loss of one of its members, Mary Lou Emerson, who was killed in an automobile accident on January 30, 1955. These four students and Mr. Fisher have been part of the Woonsocket Public Schools for twelve years. In the fall of 1943 Mr. F. E. Fisher came to Woonsocket to be Superintendent. '54 Senior Class Play “Going Places , a three act comedy, was presented by the Seniors, April 23, 1954, at 8:00 in the City Auditorium. The scene takes place in the Jackson home. After seeing Aunt Mary (Katherine Houlihan) and Nadine Smith (Theresa Howard) come home from their vacations completely worn out, Mrs. Jackson (Lois Druse) decides that the family should spend it s vacation at home. Mr. Jackson (Gordon Kappel) has his mind set on fishing in the mountains but ends up painting the basement. Elmer Jackson (Jim Forbes), a mischievious young lad spends his time cleaning out the garage by dragging everything into the living room. His pal, Timothy Swanson, (Jim McCoy) comes over to see if he and Elmer can find anything exciting to do. To make the vacation complete, all the in-laws come to visit. Grandpa Jackson and Grand- pa Brown (Jim Davis and Bob Brewer) get into a fight and are hardly able to get around. Grandma Jackson and Grandma Brown are busy scalloping potatoes and bandaging the men. In the midst of the confusion, Mr. Jackson is trying to sign a contract with an important business man, Mr. Hinckley (Bernard Ashfeld). JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM OF 1954 “Moonlight and Roses’ was the theme for the annual Junior- Senior Banquet and Prom held Tuesday evening, May 4, 1954. Nine Sophomore girls acted as waitresses for the banquet. The banquet was served at 6:30 P.M. in the lunch room. Table decora- tions followed the theme. At 8‘00 the Grand March was held in the auditorium. Mary Lou Emerson, Junior Class President and Richard Parsons led the pro- cession under the rose-covered arch. The auditorium was beautifully decorated in the “Moonlight and Roses” theme. A dark blue sky covered the ceiling. Thousands of stars sparkled in the blue. A spraying water fountain and ornamental wishing well added to the romantic effect. Music for dancing was furnished by the orchestra of Mike Gibbs. Ronald Marsh. Royalty and Attendants Woonsocket High School's third annual Home-coming, Ki Yi Day, was held Friday, October 22, 1954. Starting the festivities were a bonfire and a pep rally held Thursday evening, October 21. Following these two events a snake dance led by the cheerleaders, wound through the business district of Woonsocket. The coronation ceremonies held Friday morning started Ki Yi Day. Margy Brewster and Richard Parsons were crowned Princess and Chief by last year's royalty, Theresa Howard and Jim Forbes. Other candi- dates for princess were Mary Lou Emerson and Penny Pierce; for chief were Ronald Marsh and Aubrey Fisher. After the coronation a program was presented which consisted of a dance number by Susan Brewer and Sandra Tiede; a duet by Joan Smith and Joan Brewster; two cheers by Tom Steichen, Trudy Schlicht and Mary Jane Ferguson; and a solo by Marilynn Gutzmer, A bouquet of flowers was presented to the Princess by Marilyn Brosnan. Gifts from the Commercial Club were given to the Princess and Chief by Mr. J. Hansowitz. The parade in the afternoon, led by the Legion Color Guard, consist- ed of band, twirlers. royalty and floats. This was followed by the foot- ball game with Canova in which the Redmen came out on top with a score of 27-6. In the evening alumni and students gathered at the Parish Hall for the alumni banquet. Mr. Bill Dankey served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. The Legion sponsored dance, held in the Auditorium, concluded the Home-coming Day activities. The coronation began with the processional which was followed by a vocal solo, ’’Smile’’, by Dan Moran. Woonsocket’s High School Band under the direction of Mrs. Edythe Basham presented their final performance of the 1953-54 year in a grand concert at the Woonsocket Auditorium on May 13th. In addition to the band performance, various instrumental soloists also performed. The band’s first appearance of the 1954-55 school year was marching to the first football game of the season. They continued to march to the games throughout the year, and appeared in the home-coming parade on October 22. Other public performances made by the band during the year were at the basketball games and tournaments, Junior and Senior class plays, and a concert held in March. They also per- formed on main street on Tag Day, December 4, which was sponsored by the Band Booster Club. Six members went out for instrumental solos. They are: Mary Brewer, tenor saxophone; Robert Schutt, snare drum; Leora Ammon, mellophone; Phyllis Baseman, clarinet; Josephine Atkins, alto saxophone, and William Schroeder, trombone. Josephine Atkins and Robert Schutt also tried out for All State Band. At the beginning of the school year the band consisted of 29 members, and during the course of the year, 11 new members were added. These include: Judy Huber, tenor saxophone; Josephine Atkins, alto saxophone; William McDowell, Shirley Flanders, and Jim Smith, cornets; Craig Starr and Leonard Swanson, bass horn; Carmen Pierce and Julie Murphy, clarinets; Ramona Taylor, alto horn; and Nancy Pierce, trombone. Three members were lost during the year. A Band Boosters Club was also organized this year. Officers are: Mr. Robert Schlicht, President; Mrs. Bernice Beddow, Vice-President; Mrs. Ruth Pierce, Secretary; Mrs. Edna Baseman, Treasurer; Mrs. Mary Jane Flaa, Membership Chairman; Mrs. Irene Huber, Mr. Edward Pierce, Mrs. Farrel Jamison, and Mrs. Carol Baughfman, Assistants. Meetings are held every second Wednesday of each month in the High School. The Band Booster Club raised over $500.00 for the band this year.
