SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The class of 1953 began its career in September of 19U9 with an enrollment of 30. Those registered were: Marva Ammon, Joanne Anderson, Marvin Anderson, Mary Ashfeld, John Ball, Juanita Baseman, Eugene Bunkowski, Le Roy Bradwish, Norma Brown, Shirley Brown, Joan Druse, Naomi Dunlap, Jim Emerson, Glennis Fitting, Robert Goeman, Shirley Hansen, Pat Howard, Charles Knigge, Margaret Moran, Darwin Noble, Delilia Noltensmeier, Robert Parsons, James Patterson, Joan Payne, Nadene Roache, Janet Roti, Arlen Schroeder, Eugene Schmidt, Patty Thompson, Carl Wolf. Class officers were Robert Parsons, Pres- ident; Janet Roti, Vice-President; Glennis Fitting, Secretary-treasurer. Class candidates for Carnival King and Queen were Bob Parsons and Janet Roti. Two members of the class dropped out, Eugene Schmidt at the end of the second six weeks, and Eugene Bunkowski at the end of the year. During their Sophomore year, class officers were Marva Ammon, President; Pat Howard, Vice-President; Janet Roti, Secretary-treasurer. Candidates for Carnival King and Queen were Arlan Feistner and Glennis Fitting. Five members discontinued school here during the second year; Delilia Noltensmeier, Le Roy Bradwish, Marvin Anderson. Jim Patterson, and Nadene Roache. Class officers during the Junior year, 1951-52, were Margaret Moran, President; Charles Knigge, Vice-President; John Ball, Secretary-treasui er. During this year, the class succeeded in raising the most money to win the election for their candidates for Carnival King and Queen, Marva Ammon and Charles Knigge. The class play presented was Finders Creepers” and was under the direction of Keith Warne. Marva Ammon and Arlan Feistner were selected as Girl and Boy a State Representatives. Patty Thompson and Jim Emerson dropped out of school during this third year. Senior year enrollment began with 22. One new student was added to the class roll when Marilyn Mier transferred here from Irwin High School. Janet Roti discontinued school leaving the class with a total of 21 members. John Ball and Margaret Moran were chosen to reign as King and Queen of Ki Yi Day, the first homecoming to be held in approximately 20 years. Class officers were Joan Druse, President; Darwin Noble, Vice-President; and Norma Brown, Secretary-treasurer. Twenty-two eager students began their Junior year at Woonsocket High on September 1, 1952. The only new student was Darleen Wells. Theresa Howard was elected President; „ Katherine Houlihan, Vice-President; and Janet Steichen, Secretary-treasurer. Gordon Kappel was elected Secretary- treasurer of the student body. Juniors that participated in declam work were Janet Steichen and Katherine Houlihan. Katherine Houlihan acted as assistant-editor of the Hi-Life Staff. Those on the Annual Staff are Judy Ritter, Janet Steichen, Theresa Howard, Jim Forbes, and Janet Gutzmer. The boys that lettered in football were Jim Davis and Jim Jenssen. Jim Davis, Gordon Kappel, Jim Jenssen, Jim McCoy, Tom McCoy, and Darwin Peterson participated in basketball. Twenty-two students started their second year of High School in 1952. Marlene Reisland moved away on December 1. Mr. Meier was introduced as class advisor. Those active in basketball were Aubrey Fisher, Ronald Marsh, William Schroeder, Richard Parsons, Ronald Goeman. Thomas Steichen was elected cheerleader by the student body. William Schroeder and Aubrey Fisher represented the class in declam work, Aubrey winning a superior rating at the contest in Plankinton. Sophomore Center An inexperienced football squad took the field for Woonsocket High School in 1952 composed of boys who had seen little or no first-string action pre- viously. Their season's record of 2 wins and 5 losses failed to show the spirit and hard work put into the game by players and coach. During this 1952-53 school year, Woonsocket and Artesian with- drew from the Pioneer Football Conference in which Woonsocket has been a member for eight years, to form a new Miner-Sanborn Conference. . Candidates were chosen from the senior class by popular vote of the Student Body. Attendants were Giannis Pitting, Janet Roti, Bob Goeman, and Pat Howard. A large crowd of students, parents, and friends gathered at the City Auditorium on Friday morning, October 21 ., to wit- ness the coronation ceremonies. Ki Yi Day, Woonsocket High School's first homecoming in approxi- mately twenty years, was held on Friday, October 21 , 1952. Activities began Thursday evening when the Student Body gathered around a huge bonfire in the school yard for a pep fest. This was con- cluded with a snake dance led by the cheerleaders and football boys. Friday morning, coronation ceremonies were held in the City uditorium, at which John Ball and Margaret Moran were crowned King and Queen. In the afternoon, the parade, lead by the Legion color guard and consisting of twirlers, band, and various floats, wound its way from the south end of main street to the football field, where the Woonsocket Red- men triumphed over the Fort Thompson Panthers by a score of 3l -6. Following the football game. Alumni and students gathered at the Parish Hall at 6:30 for the Alumni Banquet. John Ball, president of the Student Body acted as master of ceremonies and Lloyd Webster gave the response for the Alumni. Closing the day's activities was the Alumni Dance sponsored by the American Legion and held in the City Auditorium. HAPPY DAZE V The senior class of 1952 presented this comedy in 3 acts on April 18, 1952. Supt. F. E. Fisher directed the play. Three Fingers in the Door , a three-act mystery- comedy, was presented by the junior class of 1953 on March 3 1953. Mrs. Ella Korthals directed the play. The cast Included Gordon Kappel as William Heupel. Theresa Howard as Slyvia Long, Lois Druse as Miss Tessie Tingle, Mary Ellen Hollingsworth as Elizabeth (Betsy) Brown, Judy Ritter as Mrs. William Heupel, Katherine Houlihan as Clara Heupel, Janet Steichen as Anna the cook, Jim Forbes as Paul Harden (Sylvia Long's fiance). Bob Brewer as Mike Denson (Alias Gregory Long), and Jim Davis as a police officer. Mr. Gregory Long is a wealthy old man who lives with his two attendants in his dilapidated mansion. His great-niece, Sylvia Long, accompanied by her aunt, her girl friend, and her fiance arrive one night to pay him a visit. The three women soon discover that there is a sinister atmosphere about the place but they can't find out what it is all about or who is at the bottom of it. The most frightening thing of all is the mysterious man with only three fingers on his hand. One thrill follows another until the climax ending when the mystery is solved. The Shock of His Life , a one-act comedy was pre- sented on November 7 1952 under the direction of Mrs. Ella Korthals. The cast, composed entirely of sophomore students, includes the following: Mary Lou Emerson as Connie Maxwell, Mary Allen Paulson as Betty Lou Maxwell, Sharilyn Schlicht as Mrs. Maxwell, Bob Schutt as Wilbur Maxwell, William Schroeder as Hercules Nelson, Wilbur's pal, and Aubrey Fisher as Mr. Maxwell. The theme of the play is built around Papa Maxwell's fear that this is his last hour to live. This idea is brought about by many humorous incidents which involve the entire Maxwell family.
