THE QUIVER 1965 Published By The Students Of WOONSOCKET SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Woonsocket, Rhode Island Volume No. 58 TABLE OF CONTENTS Page Dedication 5 Principal’s Message to the Graduates 6 Theme 7 Faculty and Administration 9 The Class of 1965 23 Superlatives 73 Underclassmen 79 Sports 91 Clubs and Activities 107 Student Council 110 Advertisements 135 The illustrations used for the divider pages in the 1965 Quiver are reproductions made from original etchings by Woonsocket High School students. The editors of the 1965 Quiver are sincerely grateful to everyone whose untiring efforts have made possible the publication of our school yearbook. To the school administration, the faculty, the Quiver advisors Mr. Cho-quette and Miss McCombe, the business and literary staffs of the Quiver, the typists, Mr. Jack Brown of T. O’Toole and Sons Publishing Company, Mr. Morin, Mr. Hanley and the members of the Art Club, we express our profound appreciation. We also wish to thank the Woonsocket Call for its kindness and cooperation, the advertisers, whose generous support has aided the financing of the yearbook, and the students of Woonsocket High School whose enthusiasm and encouragement have made our task so rewarding. 4 DEDICATION As a small manifestation of our gratitude and with a deep appreciation of your untiring efforts as teacher and coach, we, the Class of 1965, dedicate our Quiver to you, Mr. John P. McKinnon. You have shared your knowledge as teacher to animate the events of history, and your expert coaching has brought our football team to state-wide fame. For this we are grateful. As we depart from Woonsocket High School, we wish you every success and happiness in future years. mr. john p. McKinnon PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATING CLASS MR. JOSEPH F. DOWLING I hope that each of you will develop a meaningful philosophy of life which will serve you well. If you can serve your God as active churchmen, your family as devoted husbands and wives, your associates as conscientious, concerned fellow workers and your country as loyal citizens, I know that your life will be most rewarding and you will be most successful and you will bring happiness to many. I believe that one of life's greatest satisfactions comes when we give of ourselves through gifts of time, of heart, of joy, of substance which help us serve as stewards of our Lord. As Emerson expressed it, Rings and jewels are not gifts but apologies for gifts. The only true gift is a portion of Thyself”. Keep yourself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight, and you will find joy and happiness in a worthwhile life. 6 THEME SHIPS THAT PASS IN THE NIGHT Ships that pass in the night and speak each other in passing, Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness; So on the ocean of life, we pass and speak one another, Only a look and a voice, then darkness again and a silence. HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW Graduation draws an end to our high school days, as the reality of an uncertain future ends the carefree years of our youth. We’ll often reminisce about these happy years spent with precious friends and dedicated teachers, and the guidance and knowledge attained during these last three years at Woonsocket Senior High School will light our separate ways to the port of tomorrow’s promise, revealing to us a bright and more rewarding future. v ; « FACULTY and ADMINISTRATION ADMINISTRATION MR. Since track mentor Gerry Tryhubczak's initial season as coach, WHS squads have an overall record of ten victories and five defeats. Led by All-State hammer thrower Dick Narcessian and Class B javelin champion Fred Harris, WHS provided a rough afternoon for all its foes. The Gaudreau boys, Ernie and Tom, proved to be worthy co-captains as they usually captured the sprints. Junior Phil Durand gained state wide recognition for his performances in the 440 yard dash. The '64 season was a successful season, but the ’65 season appears to be the year for our trackmen. The underclassmen who were under Tryhubczak's coaching plans have become seasoned seniors. Class B Track Champions in 1965 . . . ? ON YOUR MARK, GET SET,. . . BANG! Slamming off the blocks in Olympic style, Phil Durand went out in front in the 440 yd. run against Westerly and won going away in 52.3 seconds. I SHOT AN ARROW THROUGH THE AIR... Displaying the form that gained him the Class B Javelin crown, Fred Harris tosses his spear during a workout at Barry Field. RHODE ISLAND'S PREMIER HAMMER THROWER OF 1964 Shown during his warming up period previous to his setting of a new Class B record, Dick Narcessian puts the ball and wire into orbit. OOMPH! Forcing the shot around forty feet, A1 Gaudreau gained a third place finish in the Westerly meet. THE 1964 W.H.S. Lew Syms, Walt McPherson, Armand Brizard, Stan Strzepck, and Sonny Robidoux; Third row. Coach Gus Savaria, Dick Montanari, Dick Jacobs, Gene Hudon, and Manager Frank Voller. Coach Gus Savaria's WHS Baseball team again demonstrated its ability to rank among division leaders last season. This has become a habit with Coach Savaria as his teams have had but one losing season during his thirty-eight year spell as baseball mentor. Good pitching and clutch fielding, plus timely hitting proved to be the basic ingredients which led to a fine season record of 9-3. The team's record was good enough to finish the season in second place although the team was leading the league for a good deal of the season. Seniors Ed Renaud and Fred Pinocci formed a 1-2 pitching punch which defeated most of the division teams. Renaud tossed a no-hitter against Sacred Heart, the second time in his high school career. Leading the team's regulars in hitting was Sonny Robidoux who batted .417. The infield consisted of third baseman Robidoux, shortstop Ken Allaire, second baseman Lew Syms, and either Renaud or Pinocci at first. The outfield was patroled by Dick Montanari, Dick Jacobs, Tim Skiffington. Bennie Washington handled the backstop duties in a steady fashion. The loss of seven of the nine regulars necessitates a great rebuilding of the 1965 squad, but Mr. Savaria is the man to accomplish the job. Congratulations for a job well done. LET'S GO, FELLAS! Coach Gus Savaria watches intently during a game at Barry Field. It appears that things weren't going too well at the time. A CLOUD OF DUST ... SAFE! Covering the third base sack, Sonny Robidoux lunges for a late throw as Mountie runner Larry Tremblay slides in safely. The team’s excellent 5-1 record secured a second place ranking in the final standings of the Suburban Division. Their overall 9-1 record can be looked upon with pride by all Villa Novan rooters. Their lone defeat against Classical snapped a nineteen game undefeated streak which had been extended from the 1962 season. Tlie tremendous ability of the defensive unit was evident throughout the season. Only sixty-four points were scored against WHS during the entire season. Led by linebacker Frank Gilbert, the defensive unit gave up no more than six points in all but two of the team’s ten outings. The offensive line constantly opened up many holes in the opposition’s lines. Co-captain Bob Lowe gained an All-State guard ranking, thus marking the second season in succession that he captured the position. The heart and desire of the Villa Novan was never more evident than in the Classical defeat. They never gave up. The boys proved that WHS was the best — even in defeat. GO ERNIE, GO! Following the play after springing fleet halfback Ernie Gau-dreau (12) loose, All-Stater Bob Lowe (22) tries to dispose of the final Burrillville defender. 96 UP AND OVER! Bucking through the line. CROSS-COUNTRY Coaches Gerald Tryhubczak and Paul Austin and their squad of nine harriers claim the distinction of being the first WHS Cross-Country squad to compile a winning season in nine years (1955). During the entire season the squad defeated every team in the Suburban Division except St. Raphael and North Providence. Victories over Moses Brown, Classical, Cumberland, Pawtucket West, Central and Mount Saint Charles gained the team a third place ranking. A combination of veteran leadership and excellent performances by under classmen proved to be the key to the team's success. This winning combination consisted of veteran co-captains Phil Durand and Bob Briggs plus the top running of Emmett Kane, a member of the Class B second team, Gerry Picard and Marc Liard. Prospects are bright for the 1965 season as Kane, Picard, and Liard will return to form a solid nucleus for the squad's future endeavors. The regaining of a Suburban Championship for WHS will be the team’s ultimate goal next year. Congratulations to our small but spunky crew for their fine representation of their school this season. The sounds of boys swimming at the local Y.M.C.A. pool during the week is not peculiar, but this winter over thirty boys practiced diligently under the auspices of Mr. Christy Rasta, the coach of the newly formed WHS swim team. The forming of a swim team had always been conceived, but this year only through the efforts of Rasta and an enthusiastic group of boys did the team materialize. Prominent swimmers on this year’s club are freshman Doug Brown, the holder of the New England Breastroke record (1 minute 10 seconds +), Phil Durand and Steve Brown, who are also spoken of highly in little Rhody Swim circles, Harris Mathieu, Gerry Picard, and Larry Bradley, who has shown promise of being one of the best distance swimmers at WHS. The youngest sport at WHS” will enter its first season of interscholastic competition in 1966 and many observers feel that our aqua-men will bring high prestige to our school. With the enthusiasm that the boys and Coach Rasta have shown, the team should come through with flying colors. HOCKEY WHS HOCKEY TEAM Front row from left. Coach Marcel Peloquin, Frank Trudeau, Asst. Standing in almost utter disbelief and happiness, Wally Greenlund waits for his turn to congratulate Steve Tuchapsky (under pile) for his game winning goal against La Salle. Coach Marcel Peloquin’s WHS pucksters retained their winning ways again this season. The squad also displayed the exciting brand of hockey which has been typical of previous WHS sextets. Excellent goal tending, an extremely sharp offense and an alert defense were the keys to WHS's great season. Goalie Frank Trudeau was spectacular all season. Great seasons were also turned in by Ray Lefebvre, Steve Tuchapsky, Frank Gilbert, Bob Lebon, Tom Kuczer, Glen Anger, Wally Greenlund, Dick Caron, and others. A major rebuilding job will take place next year as Coach Peloquin will lose his entire first line, but promising underclassmen are figured to assume these positions. A huge mural of graceful swans upon a pond transformed the gymnasium into a grand garden scene. Before the mural stood a dazzling multi-colored fountain surrounded by grass and spring flowers. The couples passed through a tall white arch brocaded with delicate blossoms to greet members of the faculty and chaperones. Green and white criss-crossed streamers and a cobble-stoned wall surrounded the dance area, adding to the enchantment of the delightful spring scene. The couples danced to Tony Abbott's orchestra, and the evening was climaxed by the choosing of a lovely queen. Sue Cavedon. Refreshments were served, and more dancing followed. Afterwards, many couples departed to the Colonial in Webster for more post-prom fun. 128 QUEEN SUZANNE CAVEDON CUTTING THE CAKE From left, Mr. Lavallce, Princess Susan Ouellette, Class President Conrad Robidoux, Queen Sue Cavedon, Princess Vivian Lamontagne, and Mr. Dowling. After overcoming many difficulties and hours of effort, the decorating committee had created a wondrous winter scene where the prom festivities took place. The mural upon one wall was of an enchanting distant village blanketed by winter snow. A charming birchwood bridge crossed it. White, dark and light blue streamers with matching backdrop expressed our theme Blue Velvet. Ed Drews orchestra supplied the music for dancing, and the highlight of the evening was the selection of Shirley Clark as pretty Queen of the Prom. Activities continued as couples gathered at the Colony Motor Hotel in Cranston for the remainder of the evening.
