I 1964 QUIVER PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF WOONSOCKET SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Woonsocket, Rhode Island Volume No. 57 TABLE OF CONTENTS Page Dedication 5 Theme 6 “Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening” 7 In Memoriam 8 Faculty and Administration 11 The Class of 1964 25 Principal’s Message to the Graduates 68 Superlatives 69 Underclassmen 75 Sports 87 Clubs and Activities 103 Student Council 110 Advertisements 141 We, the editorial staff of the 1964 QUIVER, would like to express our deep gratitude to all who have made this book a reality — to the school administration, the faculty, the Quiver advisors. Miss McCombe and Mr. Choquette, the business staff of the Quiver, Mr. Jack Brown of T. O’Toole and Sons Publishing Company, Mr. Morin, Mr. Hanley and the art students for their fine cooperation. We are also grateful to the Woonsocket Call for its generous use of photographs, to the students who have supported the Quiver by their subscriptions, and to the advertisers for their valuable support in assisting us to finance our yearbook. The Editors DEDICATION MR. ALBERT CHOQUETTE, JR. We, the class of 1964, proudly dedicate our yearbook, the Quiver, to you Mr. Albert Choquette, Jr. In class you conveyed more than history to us; you conveyed personalities; you conveyed knowledge. We have also found your help invaluable in editing our Quiver. May future classes at Woonsocket Senior High School continue to benefit from your aid. Commencement is merely a starting point. It is our door to the adult world, and our goals are the key to that door. We shall soon realize how far we have to travel from this beginning to see the culmination of our efforts. Our yet untraveled road is uncertain; we cannot lie dormant if we are to take part in tomorrow’s promise. We have, as Robert Frost so aptly stated, MILES TO GO before we sleep. 6 STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound’s the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. Robert Frost 3n iWemortam JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY 35th President of the United States Born May 29, 1917 Inaugurated January 20, 1961 Died November 22, 1963 “With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help but knowing that here on earth God’s work must be truly our own.” Inaugural Address FACULTY and ADMINISTRATION His house is in the village though . . . Dowling I can think of no finer message to leave with you than this beautiful prayer which 1 know we could all use in the days ahead when the stress and strains of daily living close in on us and all worthy aid seems to fail us. leach me, my Lord, to be sweet and gentle in all the events of life, in disappointments, in the thoughtlessness of others, in the insincerity of those I trusted, in the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied. Let me put myself aside to think of the happiness of others, to hide my pains and heartaches so that I may be the only one to suffer from them. Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path. Let me so use it that it may mellow me, not harden me, nor embitter me, that it may make me patient, not irritable, that it may make me broad in my forgiveness, not narrow, haughty and overbearing. May no one be less good for having come within my influence. No one less pure, less true, less kind, less noble, for having been a fellow traveler on our journey toward Eternal Life. As I go my rounds from one distraction to another, let me whisper from time to time a word of love to Thee. May my life be lived in the supernatural, full of power for good and strong in its purpose of sanctity. 68 SUPERLATIVES My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near MR. Headcoach Jack McKinnon and his assistants Mr. Frank Morey and Mr. James Gerlach led Woonsocket High School to the Class B championship with a spotless 6-0 league record and 9-0 overall record. It was Woonsocket’s first Class B championship since 1946 and it was a well deserved one. Woonsocket’s success was due to a highly-potent offense and a stingy defense. The offense while amassing 158 points, was led by speedy halfback, Ernie Gaudreau, who scored a total of 68 points in only 6 league games and was a well-known visitor to the opponents’ end zones. The defense, led by all-staters Roger Morisseau, Bob Lowe, and Timmy Skiffington, yielded only 19 points in league competition. The 33-0 drubbing of defending Class B Champion Deering High School, and holiday victories over M. S. C. 40-0, and Burrillville 13-6 highlighted a more than successful season. A long famine was broken when the Woonsocket High team won the city basketball championship in two consecutive games — one a thrilling 65-63 double overtime victory; the other a handily won 72-45 victory that gave Woonsocket the trophy for the first time in thirteen years! Much of the rebounding was done by Fred Harris and Rene Phaneuf, while the crowds were thrilled by the spectacular ball handling of Ernie Gaudreau, Billy Motte, and Jackie Mullen. The Villa Novans also had a more than capable bench with Jimmy Jarry, Lloyd Gariepy, and Tommy and A1 Gaudreau. VOICE OF DEMOCRACY CONTEST For the first time in school history, a Woonsocket High School student was Rhode Island’s representative in the national Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Voice of Democracy contest held in Washington, D.C., in March. The speech, by Susan Bazinet, was chosen from among twenty-six to represent the W.H.S. in the Northern Rhode Island contest, and then to represent District One in the state contest. Contest rules were simple — a speech, of original composition, between three and five minutes in length on “The Challenge of Citizenship.” At press time, a delegate from each state and from United States territories was eagerly preparing for the five-day trip which included Philadelphia’s Independence Square, Valley Forge, the Freedom Foundation, Gettysburg, Washington, Arlington, and a meeting with President Johnson. The climax was a Congressional dinner attended by 1400 V.F.W. and Congressional leaders. The trip ended as the contestants boarded planes for home at Baltimore’s International Airport. SUSAN BAZINET THE CHALLENGE OF CITIZENSHIP A seemingly riderless horse, with stirrups reversed, carries the sorrow, the shame, the guilt of a nation. The fallen warrior has met the ultimate challenge of citizenship; he will not rise again. The hoofprints glisten with the blood of nations, the blood of men. This horse is destined to trod a solemn world filled with brotherly hate. From this mass of sadness, a nation cries out with the agony of growing pains. The countries of the world look with amazement and wonder at the oldest democracy of the modern world. Slowly its people awaken from the stupor of mourning, and assume the demanding, but esteemed name, American. The nation has begun to live — again. As before, the strong lead the weak in freedom’s private battle. We find no peace in Laos, in Viet Nam, in Birmingham, a bomb-shattered city with only a whisper of life. There is a tear-stained face, and agonized scream, fear on neighbors faces. Freedom lies hidden by hate. Why is this so? Shall the challenge continue to stand unanswered? No, for we are an awakened nation! We are Americans! We are Americans in a city where the Cold War has placed its icy finger. The Wall of Shame winds through Berlin. Those Blocks of Infamy are wet with martyrs blood. The wall stands for all to see, and. for all to hate. Here again is mankind’s greatest challenge — freedom. No wall is too great to scale; no gun can pose a threat too great, for freedom is born as a state of mind. Our thoughts are not stopped by concrete. Our spirit is in Germany, we are now Berliners! As Americans have always risen to the occasion, so have they paid the price when Liberty demanded tribute. From the first transactions at Lexington and Valley Forge, to more recent ones at Normandy, Korea, and the Viet Nam jungles, we have bought, and kept, our freedom. Why pay this price? Why send men to die in infested swamps or on lonely beaches? The answer is in these words: “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” But has the price been paid? We see an epidemic of racial violence and radical political strife scarring our country; and we hear, echoing in the corridors of history, this admonition, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” But our house has stood, it shall stand, because the price was paid — in Dallas. With a rifle shot still ringing in our ears, and a flag-draped coffin stamped vividly on our minds, we can almost hear, in the words of an undelivered speech, a familiar voice give us the ultimate challenge. “We in this country, in this generation, are — by destiny rather than choice — the watchmen on the walls of world freedom. We ask ... that we may achieve in our time and for all time, the ancient vision of peace on earth, good will toward men.” Yes, the burden of death has been lifted, but its memory shall never be erased. The challenge of citizenship is freedom, its standard-bearer, unity. A black riderless horse has fused the minds and hearts of a nation into a common cause. He also serves who is dead. For the brief shining moment that was the Kennedy era, we Americans say, “Thank you, Mr. President.” But freedom is life; and freedom’s challenge is to live in the hope of tomorrow. Susan Bazinet 125 JUNIOR PROM 126 QUEEN DONNA DUMAS THE QUEEN AND IIER COURT L. to r.: Peter Gaines, Darlene Sadwin, Louis Lantner, Queen Donna Dumas, Louis Mailloux, Carolyn Bourget, Jeffrey Barr. The annual Junior Prom took place on the clear, moonlit night of May 3, 1963. This was the first formal dance which the juniors had had and would remember for years to come. The main attraction was a multi-colored garden and a star lit background. A basket weaved ceiling of yellow and white streamers carried out the theme of the Prom, “Some Enchanted Evening.” The night was climaxed by the choosing of the Queen and her attendants and the distribution of favors reminding us of our first memorable high school days. The large, beautiful cake was cut and refreshments were served. A post-prom banquet was served at Monticello. SENIOR PROM 1964 128 QUEEN MARY JANE SMITH THE QUEEN’S COURT L. to r.: Thomas Allaire, Jeanne Carter, Paul Beaudet, Donna Dumas, Queen Mary Jane Smith, Class President Daniel Moylan, Carolyn Bour-get, Francis Faubert. The time for the prom was growing near. The class had voted and chosen “Tonight, Tonight” from the motion picture IVest Side Story as their theme. Twenty-five students from the decorating committee had come to help. The following day more seniors were excused by the sympathetic teachers to work on the transformation of the gym. The air was filled with expectant joy. The air was cold Friday, February 7, but this did not dampen the spirits of the one hundred forty-nine couples that attended, for once they entered they were enchanted by the music of Tony Abbot’s band and a winter night scene. Highlighting the decorations was a stage setting portraying a moonlit mountain -range and a waterfall. At the further end of the gym a light blue back drop was suspended with accented silhouettes portraying the senior boys and girls. Time for the Grand March arrived, and with it, the choosing of the Queen of the Prom. As our Class President placed the crown on the queen’s head, her attendants stood by radiant in their colorful ball dresses. The gala time which all had experienced came to an end too quickly and all departed for the King Philip. SATURDAY SEMINAR STUDENTS FIRST SEMESTER Top Row, I. to r.: M. Iannoli, R. Lefe bvre.
