McCOMBE DEDICATION 1 o you, Miss Ethel E. McComhe, we, the Class of 1960, wish to dedicate our Quiver. We take this opportunity to tell you that the countless services which you so willingly perform for students, as well as teachers, are deeply appreciated by all. Your methodical teaching has enabled pupils of the business course to be accomplished in their various occupations in the commercial world. We also thank you for your untiring devotion to the members of the Quiver advertising and subscription committees, without whom our Quiver would not be a success. From your grateful students and fellow faculty members comes a hearty wish for your future health, success, and happiness. 4 THEME The Fine Arts Since the appreciation of Fine Arts serves as a necessary supplement to our academic studies, we have chosen this as the theme of our Quiver. It seems fitting that we should choose this field because in high school we begin to recognize and appreciate the culture that has been handed down to us. As technical skills increase dexterity, and sciences train the mind to logical thinking, so do Fine Arts enrich our hearts and souls. On the following pages we have attempted to portray aspects of the Fine Arts which are symbolic of our high school life. Fine Arts may be defined as anything concerned with the creation of things of beauty — music, literature, sculpture, and architecture. Certainly our orchestra, dance band, and choral group give us, besides entertainment, an insight into the realm of music. Literary classes bring us in contact with the works of great authors of the past and the present and inspire young authors of the future. Aren’t the Villa Novan and library paper examples of classroom training in practice? Interposed with the text are illustrations made by our art students, graphic examples of student painting and drawing. As we go out into the world, Fine Arts serve as the key to the door from the materialistic world to the wondrous world of culture. No matter how varied our future occupations may be, if we all think of the theme of our Quiver as a reminder of all we have learned in high school, we will have a common bond of memories that will never separate us in spirit. 5 Faculty and Administration MR. WILFRED N. LAVALLEE, JR. Vice-Principal MR. JOSEPH F. DOWLING Principal MISS MURIEL McFEE Dean of Girls J Am Musk One 1 serve as I serve all; and the king I make my slave as easily as I subject his slave. I speak through the birds of the air, the insects of the field, the crash of waters on rock-ribbed shores, the sighing of wind in the trees, and I am even heard by the soul that knows me in the clatter of wheels on city streets. 1 know no brother, yet all men are my brothers; I am the father of the best that is in them, and they are fathers of the best tbat is in me; I am of tbem, and they are of me. For I am the instrument of God. Department Chairmen MISS ETHEL E. McCOMBE Business, Quiver Financial Adviser MR. MARTIN P. CROWLEY, JR. History MISS ELIZABETH R. MISS RUTH E. PARSONS O'DONNELL English Mathematics MISS CATHERINE R. O'DONNELL Guidance, Tests and Measurements MISS FRANCOISE B. VALCOURT French, Quiver Literary Adviser SAYINGS System spells success. Always try to be a little kinder than is necessary. A lot of live wires would be dead if it were not for their connections. Do you hope to do better next year — or do you PLAN to do better? To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart. The person who knows everything has a lot to learn. Every day is a good day if you make it that way. If you can't have the best of everything, make the best of everything you have. Look pleasant — someone is always taking your picture. Success shuns the unworthy, the unwilling and the unprepared. Tact is the unsaid part of what you think. The best way to get rid of worries is to let them die of neglect. What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. Many fine things can be done in a day if you don’t always make that day tomorrow. The shape of things to come is carved out of the present. A moment’s silence at the right time can do more than a million words. The penalty for not keeping up is being left behind. The best place to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm. The greatest power in the world is will power. It’s much easier to be critical than correct. Anger is a luxury that’s too expensive for most of us. No man can become a failure without his own consent. MR. LEO J. ALLARD, JR. English, Dramatics MR. WILLIAM 0. BEDARD Physics, Mathematics MR. Sutherland. 1959 QUIVER 1960 ( WOONSOCKET CALL”, NOVEMBER 5, 1959) The CSPA was set up in 1949 by Columbia University to establish a system of grading yearbooks for the quality of their content as the photo-journalistic report or record of all school activities for a given year. The books are judged by classes: college, high school, etc. They are considered in the light of their plan, layout, content coverage, photography, photo-engraving or offset, printing and typography, paper stock and cover, and other considerations. The 1959 Quiver was praised for its plan, the quality of its photography, and its attractive cover. Miss Francoise B. Valcourt and Miss Ethel E. McCombe, Quiver literary and financial advisers, received the notice of their score and criticisms this week. They expressed appreciation for the award and cited the hard work and perseverence of the Quiver literary, advertising, and subscription committees that made the award possible. The advisers noted that the yearbook was the product of these students’ work and that without them the Quiver would never have come about. They said they have great hopes that members of this year’s graduating class will be able to produce a book of first place standing. Marjory Miller was assistant to Miss Valcourt and Elizabeth Hughes served as editor-in-chief. Susan Dubuc and Andrea Kogut were co-editors and Sharon Dumas and Alice Lovell were their assistants. Artists were Ruth Macktez, Barbara Burak, Julie Nadeau, Kathleen Corrigan and Joseph Bonin. Raymond Zarychta and William Smith were sports editors. Seater, Left to Right: S. Finkelstein; M. Dion; E. (Senior [P rom The Senior Prom, held on February 5, I960, brought to a climax a week of excitement and hustle and bustle of activity throughout the senior class. The gym was transformed into a winter scene on the theme of Deep Purple with the colors of deep purple, lavender and white. A rustic gate with a snowladen walk edged by a stone wall led the couples by the foot of a giant realistic mountain with a bright moon overhead. Proceeding down the receiving line, the couples met Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dowling, Principal; Miss Muriel McFee; Miss Lillian Maher; Miss Margaret McGill, Mrs. Sherwood Sadwin; Mrs. Arthur Falcioni; Mrs. Ernest Robillard; and Mrs. Clayton Hare. The big moment for the senior girls arrived when Craig Overton, Class President, escorted Lorraine Falcioni, last year's Junior Prom Queen, to the throne, signifying the beginning of the grand march. The judges, Mr. Thomas A. Dalton and Miss Eleanor Winn, had a difficult time choosing one queen from all the beautiful senior girls, but they finally chose three Stars out of the heaven of pretty girls — Linda Hare, Queen, and her attendants, Patricia Costa and Eileen Antolini. Refreshments were served and more dancing was enjoyed by all before the memorable evening came to an end. Linda Hare Queen Left to Right: Mt. Dowling, Principal; C. Overton; L. Hare; L. Boudreau entered Woonsocket High School as a student, determined to complete her high school education. Her main goal is to attend R. I. C. E. and become a teacher, but her family came before these goals. Having had to leave school to help support her family, Alice vowed to go back someday and finish high school. The above picture shows Mrs. Boudreau with her two sons, Roger and Maurice who with Mr. Boudreau suffer no neglect through Mrs. Boudreau’s schooling. Because of her dynamic personality and undying perseverence, Alice Boudreau is a woman whom the students and teachers of W.H.S. will not soon forget. . . . Mrs. Alphonse J. Chevrette JEANNE BOUCHER This plucky young gal has had a break every year in high school, but not a good luck break! In her freshman year Jeanne sported a splint on the little finger of her right hand. She had broken her pinky” playing softball. Last summer softball must have been more strenuous, shown by this picture of Jeanne from the front page of the Woonsocket Call. Jeanne — with her five broken toes — was still on crutches when school began in September. It became quite a usual sight for everyone to see Jeanne hopping through the corridors on her way to class. When the crutches finally disappeared, everyone thought Jeanne was in one 68 piece again and hoped it would be for good. But — one more fractured pinky in February completed her broken” record in W.H.S. THE SENIOR CLASS CHRISTMAS PARTY About 100 seniors attended the Senior Class Christmas Party held Tuesday, December 22, 1959, from 7:30 to 10:30 P.M. The class officers and a special party committee planned the evening which was highlighted by a visit from Santa Claus. Each guest brought a joke present with him to be exchanged with a classmate's later on in the evening. A game of passing the grapefruit from person to person under the chin added much hilarity to the occasion. Carol Shaw, Joyce Montanari, Anne Mucciaroni, Kathy McNally, Louise Styborski, Rene Levesque, George Papa-ioannou, Joe Plante, and Jim McDonald participated in a beatnik” scene featuring a Night Before Christmas” read- ing by George Papaioannou. A special cake for the class of I960, cookies, and Coke were served in the cafeteria after the entertainment. The chaperones for the evening were Mr. Mrs. Dowling, Miss McGill, Miss Surprenant, Miss Lloyd, Miss Basquin, Mrs. Kennedy, Mr. Bedard, Mr. Crowley, Mr. Croquette, Mr. Allard, Mr. Marrah, Mr. Leveillee, Mr. Hanley, Mr. Hill and Mr. Lantner. The women were presented with attractive Christmas corsages, and the men received Boutonnieres as they arrived. It was agreed by everyone who attended that the evening was a grand success. Miss Hare's name has been submitted as Woonsocket’s entry in the statewide good citizenship contest sponsored by the DAR. Miss Hare was elected by her fellow classmates on the basis of her dependability, service, leadership, patriotism and scholarship. The results of this election, held earlier in the week, were announced yesterday afternoon by Miss Muriel M. McFee, dean of girls. Miss Hare has taken an active part in the social and cultural life at Woonsocket High during her three years at that school. She has been vice president of her class for two years; is co-captain of the cheering squad; is assistant to the literary adviser of the Quiver, the WHS yearbook. She is going to participate in the annual Model Congress and her name has appeared on the school honor roll for the last three years. The nominee has participated in the Model Legislature, she has been a member of the Student Council, she sang in the chorus and glee club last year and she was elected queen of her senior prom earlier this month. Miss Hare plans to attend Bryant College, Providence, in the fall and to enter secretarial work after her graduation from that school. Linda Hare — Winner of the Good Citizenship Award. THE HAYSEEDE HOP THE THANKSGIVING HOP Wednesday, October 28,1959 Did you step confidently up to the ticket window, purchase a ticket, and walk casually to the entrance? What made you stop short, hmm? A playground slide that was the only way to be allowed into the gym? It looked so easy until you landed on the floor instead of on the mattress! The Student Council cleverly added to everyone’s enjoyment by the appropriate decorations, among which was Charlie”, our faithful scarecrow. The feature of the evening was the crowning of a L’il Abner, Louis Romano, and a Daisy Mae, Aline Bell. Just to be different the dance began at 7:29, terminated at 10:29, and cost 49c. The male and female attire for the evening was very casual and included slacks. Mr. and Mrs. Dowling, Mr. Lavallee, Miss Basquin, and Miss Surprenant were the chaperones for the evening. Needless to say, a good time was had by all. Tuesday, November 24,1959 What are we thankful for — why, popular records, a gym decorated in autumn colors, refreshments, and a large percentage of the student body who enjoy dancing! All of these constitute the Thanksgiving Hop, an annual dance sponsored by the Student Council. The liquid sunshine outside did not dampen the spirits of those inside. The highlight of the evening was the raffling of a turkey, won by Wanda Dobrwado. Mr. Allard, Mr. Crowley, Mr. Cho-quette, Mr. Hanley, Miss Dyjak, Miss Owens, Mr. Mrs. Dowling, and Mr. Lavallee were the chaperones for the evening. What are we thankful for? Bright spots in the Woonsocket lineup were Moose Hoyle and Dennis Haggerty on offense and Babe Herman and Fred Santucci on defense. WOONSOCKET 0 PAWTUCKET WEST 12 After getting over the usual open day jitters, Woonsocket played a brilliant second half, but too late to stare off the West attack. The left side of the defensive line-of Dennis Demers, Babe Herman and Fred Santucci was immense. A new-comer, Ronnie Fox, also did a bang up job as Defensive Halfback. Henry Renaud, Roger Audette, and Moose” Hoyle gained the yardage for the Villa Novans. WOONSOCKET 6 DE LA SALLE 13 Coach Jack McKinnon moved Fred Santucci to an end position and Freshman Dave Bouvier to quarterback. With De. La Salle scoring in the last 30 seconds Woonsocket nearly pulled one of the seasons first upsets. Moose” Hoyle scored the lone Villa Novan touchdown on a 45 yard run. Renaud, Hoyle and Audette looked good on offense while Herman, Demers and Santucci once again sparked the defense positions. Joe Hutnak did a great job as linebacker. W OON SOCKET 19 CLASSICAL 19 With Hank Renaud scoring on a 21 yard pitch out and a 3 yard plunge Woonsocket had its first two touchdowns. Moose Hoyle shaking off a host of tacklers calmly made a 52 yard sprint. Woonsocket gave the defending Champions a sever blow in their future title chances. Line smashers consisting of Morris, Skiffington, Martin, Demers, Haggerty, Herman, Santucci, and Teevens kept Classical in tact. WOONSOCKET 0 DEERING 20 An on side kick attempt struck a Woonsocket lineman and bounded back into the hands of the opposition, and Woonsocket's first down attempt failed by an actual two inches. Bouvier, Renaud, and Hoyle did their utmost on offense while Joe Hutnak, Terry Morris, George Carrigan, Dennie Demers and Dennis Haggerty sparked the defense. With a few breaks going for the Villa Novans, Deering might have been in for a real surprise. WOONSOCKET 0 MT. ST. CHARLES 6 A razzle dazzle play in the first quarter helped ruin the Villa Novan chances. Co-Capt. Fred Santucci, leading his team with the help of Mike Skiffington, Ronnie Fox, Richard Pinnocci, Dennis Demers, Dave Bouvier, Moose Hoyle and Roger Audette were in on plenty of the tackles. Renaud, Lowther, and Haggerty tried to bring the pigskin into the end zone. WOONSOCKET 6 TOLMAN 27 The Villa Novans played powerful Tolman on even terms for the first half yelding 27-6 to the unbeaten Tigers. Woonsocket scored on a beautiful pass play of 62 yards. With the ball on the 28, Quarterback Dave Bouvier hit Fred Santucci with a 10 yard pass and then hit Moose” Hoyle and the flashy Halfback didn’t stop running until he hit pay dirt 62 yards away. WOONSOCKET 37 WESTERLY 13 With Babe” Herman leading the way the Villa Novans blocked crisply and enabled the backs to run through the Westerly line. Moose” Hoyle scored on 35 and 40 yard runs, Hank Renaud on 12 and 5 yard runs and Dave Lowther and Dave Bouvier on short plunges. Herman kicked for the extra point. The praise goes to the linemen consisting of Demers, Santucci, Skiffington, Carrigan, and Morris, along with Martin and Teevins. Also the underclassmen such as Friske, Geruso, Farland, Mandeville, Harris, Lamberto played considerable in the encounter. WOONSOCKET 18 NORTH PROVIDENCE 9 Although the first half lasted 75 minutes, time didn’t mean a thing as the Villa Novans beat North Providence 18-7. With quarterback Dave Bouvier passing to Fred Santucci on many occasions, Woonsocket scored all their points with the help of sharp passing. Bouvier hit Santucci on a 36 yarder, and Renaud then scored on a 8 yard run. The Villa Novans then marched 75 yards, with Hoyle going over from the eight. Dave Lowther intercepted a pass that set up the last T.D. Renaud scored from the 4. Hoyle and Hutnak sparked the linebackers and Skiffington and Herman refused to move on the line, and blocked everything that came toward them. WOONSOCKET 7 ST. Mike Skiffington, Babe Herman and Wolf” Morris helped keep the scoreboard down for the Villa Novans. WOONSOCKET 13 BURRILLVILLE 0 For a team that wasn't expected to come within 3 touchdowns of the Broncos, the Villa Novans pulled one of the greatest upsets in football history at W.H.S. The upset-that’s putting it mildly was constructed on a solid foundation of crisp blocking and slashing tackles. Bruce Hoyle, winner of the Gridiron Club award sparked the Villa Novan attack both defensively and offensively. Hoyle eluded the entire Burrillville team on a 54-yard payoff jaunt, and by the tremendous blocking of Bouvier and Santucci. Hank Renaud bulled his way through the Broncos line for the second T. D. The score would have been a easy 19-0 game but due to some mishap on the field a touchdown was called back. Underclassmen DeCubellis, Teevens, Haggerty, Benoit, Carrigan, Pinocci, Richards, John Skiffington, Martin, Farland, Bouvier, Lowther, and Renaud contributed their share to the victory. To seniors Moose” Hoyle, Fred Santucci, Babe” Herman, Dennis Demers, Paul Allaire, Wolf” Morris, Joe Hutnak and Mike Skiffington, their high school football careers ended in a blaze of glory. HOCKEY 1959-60 WOONSOCKET 2 CRANSTON 3 A scrappy Villa Novan team missed a golden opportunity to upset favored Cranston as they ran out of gas in the last period. Den Desaulniers and John Benevides scored in the second period, but the Thunderbolt stormed back with three goals in the final period. Ray Trant was tremendous in th Woonsocket goal. WOONSOCKET 0 LASALLE 2 Woonsocket was shut out by an effective LaSalle team 2-0. One of the goals was accidental as it caromed off a LaSalle skater. Ron Fullam and Ray Trant were tremendous defensively. Woonsocket played without Den Desaulniers who sustained a Charley horse in the previous game. WOONSOCKET 2 BURRILLVILLE 1 Sparked by the brilliant play of Goalie Ray Trant who turned aside 21 shots, a rack'em, sock'em Woonsocket High School team defeated the Broncos 2-1. Dennis Desaulniers and Dennis Demers scored for the Villa Novans as Bruce Hoyle sparked at defense. WOONSOCKET 3 WARWICK 2 Woonsocket defeated a greatly improved Warwick team 3-2 as Ray Trant and Bruce Hoyle sparked defensively. Dick Sutcliffe, Ron Fullam and Den Demers scored for Woonsocket. WOONSOCKET 2 HOPE 1 A back-checking Villa Novan squad plus a scintillating goaltending display by Ray Trant defeated previously undefeated Hope 2-1. Woonsockets big line of Den Demers, Bob Auger, and Dick Sutcliffe accounted for both goals as Demers and Sutcliffe scored with center Bob Auger collecting two assists. WOONSOCKET 4 NORTH PROVIDENCE 0 The Villa Novans scored three times in the first period and once in the third while toppling the Cougars 4-0 for its fourth win in six tries. Woonsocket scorers were Den Desaulniers, Dick Sutcliffe, Dave Moore and John Benevides. WOONSOCKET 5 EAST PROVIDENCE 2 After falling behind 1-0 in the first period and being held to a 2-2 draw midway through the second, Woonsocket exploded for three tallies to take the measure of East Providence 5-2. Woonsocket’s starting line of Dennis Demers, Dick Sutcliffe and Bob Auger accounted for all the goals, the first named clicking three times. WOONSOCKET 5 MT. ST. CHARLES 2 The second line of John Benevides, Dennis Desaulniers and Dave Moore provided most of the fireworks as Woonsocket defeated the Mounties 5-2 in a rough game. Benevides collected the hat trick while Bob Auger and Dick Sutcliffe collected the other goals. WOONSOCKET 0 CRANSTON 1 Woonsocket was nipped on a final period goal with three minutes remaining, as they outplayed the Thunderbolt but couldn't put the puck pass the capable Cranston goalie. Ron Fullam and Bruce Hoyle who played the entire game sparked on defense. WOONSOCKET 3 LASALLE 2 Dennis Demers’ backhanded slap shot at 2:07 of sudden death overtime put Woonsocket by LaSalle, but it was strictly a team effort. Ron Fullam set up Demers' shot with a nifty pass, and played a great game at defense as did Bruce Hoyle. The two lines performed exceptionally well, their passing being letter perfect. The other goals were scored by Den Desaulniers and Dick Sutcliffe. WOONSOCKET 5 WARWICK 1 Woonsocket poured in four goals in the second period to defeat Warwick, who had scored first, 5-1. The goals were scored by Den Desaulniers (2), Bob Auger, Den Demers, and Dave Moore. WOONSOCKET 4 BURRILLVILLE 1 Once again Woonsocket resorted to a rock’em, sock'em type of play with Defensemen Ron Fullam and Bruce Hoyle leading the way, and once again it paid off as the Villa Novans defeated the mighty Broncos 4-1. The Woonsocket scorers were Desaulniers, Sutcliffe, Hoyle, and Demers. WOONSOCKET 0 HOPE 4 Woonsocket was defeated by a smooth-passing, accurate shooting Hope squad 4-0 despite a great defensive game by Ray Trant, Bruce Hoyle, and Ron Fullam. WOONSOCKET 6 NORTH PROVIDENCE 0 Woonsocket, with goalie Ray Trant turning in his second shutout, scored in every period to rout the Cougars 6-0. The goals were scored by Dave Moore(2), Ron Fullam, Bill Gaza, Dick Sutcliffe, Bob Auger, and Ed Noel. WOONSOCKET 6 EAST PROVIDENCE 0 WOONSOCKET 2 MT. ST. CHARLES 1 Woonsocket High School clinched a position in the Interscholastic League championship playoffs by nipping Mt. St. Charles 2-1. Ray Trant played on an injured ankle and did not play his usual game in the nets. The Villa Novan scorers were Benevides (2), and Desaulniers. WOONSOCKET 0 BURRILLVILLE 5 Woonsocket was eliminated from the state playoffs by a 5-0 loss to Burrillville. Penalties proved costly to the Villa Novans. Once again Ray Trant had to play on an injured ankle. TRACK Get over that bar! J. Piotrow-ski jumping, M. Dressier, standing, and teammates watching. CROSS COUNTRY 1959 Coach Roger Dwyer's harriers competed in the new Class B circuit for the second straight season, finishing with a record of no wins and seven defeats. They suffered defeats to Tolman, North Providence, St. Raphael, Coventry, Moses Brown, Barrington and Classical. The reason the Villa Novans had a poor season was that all of last year's members either graduated or did not participate in the sport this season. The major loss, of course, was Billy Smith, the team's top runner last season and one of the best in the state, who has moved into college. Team members were Joe Pryor, Joel Esten, Normand Baillargeon, Jack Boczar, Albert Lanoue, Roger Roy, George Yeaton, Paul Cardin, Gerald Lefevre, and Fred Martin. The Runner: Joseph Pryor.
