1958 Quiver Woonsocket High School Woonsocket, Rhode Island DEDICATION As we reminisce about our three years at Woonsocket High School, one person is affixed in our minds. Your long and devoted service to the students of Physics and to our athletes will never be forgotten by anyone who has ever known you. You have taught us leadership and sportsmanship both in the classroom and on the field. So, to you, MR. SAVARIA, we, the class of 1958, dedicate our yearbook as a small token of our deep appreciation. 2 1 ✓ THEME One of the best ways for any young person to develop responsibility, good judgment, and maturity is through the medium of Sports. Whether a girl participating only weekly in gym classes or a boy managing his work as captain of the football team, we are all afforded an opportuniy to display our qualities in the art of good sportsmanship. With this in mind, we, the members of the Quiver” staff of 1957-58 wish to develop this theme of Sports throughout this year’s Quiver”. FACULTY and ADMINISTRATION MR. JOSEPH F. Of greater significance, however, is the fact that as seniors, you young men and women now stand at the crossroads ready to choose one of many divergent paths which will take you to your ultimate goal in life. As teachers and educators, it is our hope that while with us you have developed a healthy respect for intellectual achievement, a deep sense of moral values, a desire for personal integrity and a spirit of fairness in living with your fellow man. In the further preparation of becoming a respected and valued member of society, you will realize from time to time the emotions of joy, sorrow, and frustration common to all. We feel that with God’s help you will find the strength and courage to face your problems unafraid. Congratulations on a job well done and sincerest wishes for your future success. 10 EDWARD J. X HARRY ELLIS IN MEMORIAM On January 13, all chattering in the home rooms ceased and a shocked silence ensued when teachers revealed to their students that Harry Ellis was dead. The junior from Room 9 had died that Saturday, one day before his sixteenth birthday, in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage. His quiet but cheerful presence is missed in the shop at Woonsocket High, where he specialized in metal-working. The Senior Fellowship of the First Universalist Church, which he attended faithfully, and the Rough Riders’ Club sorely feel the absence of the hard-working youth. The Woonsocket Chapter, Order of De Molay, lost a loyal member as well as able officer in Harry, who was their treasurer for the fiscal year of, 1956-57. Likewise, all of us at Woonsocket High shall miss his thoroughly likeable personality, for he has left an empty place in our class which can never be filled except by our fond memories. JOYCE E. FOOTBALL WOONSOCKET 0 CLASSICAL 19 The beginning of the end! Woonsocket played an impressive first half, but faltered in the second. Bright spots for the VILLA NOVANS were Duperron, Roy, Costa, and Lynch. Branconnier and Kokolski did the kicking. Also, Beaudry, the middle man. WOONSOCKET 18 TOLMAN 46 Not much to say . . . The Flu ruined Woonsocket's chances with only 22 players in uniform, and some playing with the Flu as well. Costa, Duperron, and Hoyle refused to be discouraged. Duperron scoring Woonsocket's first touchdown. A Costa to Dubois pass scored the second touchdown. A Costa run scored the third. Pernini, Dubois, and Kokolski were outstanding on the line. WOONSOCKET 8 SAINT RAPHAEL 25 Woonsocket outplayed the Saints in the last three periods, but the damage was done in the first, when the Saints scored 19. Underclassman Bruce Hoyle played great ball. Dick Beaudry and Tony Costa also shined; Tarmey defensive stalwart. WOONSOCKET 12 DEARING 39 Again Woonsocket has good second half, but too late to stare off attack. Lynch pass to Dubois for touchdown. Lynch scores on rush. Roy, Duperron, effective. Line tremendous: Beaudry, DePedro, Branconnier, Desroches, Kokolski, and Tarmey. WOONSOCKET 32 Dc LaSALLE 7 VILLA NOVANS again show superior strength. Even though faltering in the second half, Woonsocket shows that they have what it takes. Lynch had his best day checking passes; completing 7 out of 10, one being a 37 yard touchdown pass to AI Duperron. Roy and Costa also had a field day. Dubois was Lynch's main target, but he was connecting with everyone. Roy was leading ground gainer with 113 yards in 9 tries for a 12.2 average. It was mainly an offensive show but it never would have worked if it weren't for the efforts of the stout linemen. The praise really goes to them: Tarmey, Dubois, DePedro, Pernini, Desroches, Branconnier, Kokolski, and Beaudry. WOONSOCKET 20 NORTH KINGSTON 13 Woonsocket shows that it can come from behind. The boys really put out. Al Duperron and Hal Roy were big guns on offense, Duperron scoring 2 and Roy 1, with 1 point after. Duperron and Roy were also leading ground gainers of the night, with 79 and 70 yards gained in that order. Bright spots on defense were Pernini, Beaudry, and Tarmey. The VILLA NOVANS didn’t falter once after North Kingston scored. Woonsocket roared back with Roy scoring. Kingston scored again, and the VILLA NOVANS retaliated with Duperron receiving the honors. Duperron added the finishing touch with a nifty run behind superb blocking by Lynch, bringing the victory back to Woonsocket. 68 L to R: Assistant coach, Sahinc Sarkisian, Coach Jack McKinnon, assistant coach, Vin Dwyer. Tony Costa WOONSOCKET 13 NORTH PROVIDENCE 0 Second Class B win. Lynch and Costa scored one each to lead the offensive attack. Costa looked good on offensive, as did Roy and Duper-ron. Tarmey, number one linebacker. L to R: Marcel Desroches, Ronnie De-Cubellis, A1 Duperron. L to R: Tony Costa, Fran Lynch, Steve Kokolski, Don DePedro. WOONSOCKET VS. MOUNT ST. CHARLES Although Woonsocket won only two games, the shoe would have been on the other foot, if it hadn't been for a few tough breaks and if the VILLA NOV-ANS could have gotten a few of those good halves together. Undoubtedly, both the Mount and Burrillville games would have been different. No one can say that this year’s football team didn’t have what it takes. They were all in there, fighting. We say goodby and good luck to the following Seniors: Captains: Tony Costa, A1 Duperron, and Bill Reilly. Backs: Hal Roy and Dick Kearns. Linemen: Dick Beaudry, Don De-Pedro, Steve Kokolski, and Marcel Des-roches. L to R: Gene O’Neill, Sportscaster for W.W.O.N., Gene Mailloux. SENIOR FOOTBALL PLAYERS Standing, L to R: S. Kokolski, D. One of the best games of the season . . . until the last quarter . . . then the roof fell in. Due to lack of reserves, the boys just couldn’t hold out any longer. DeCubellis, Roy, Lynch, and Duperron played well as did Tarmey, Desroches, Beaudry, Branconnier, De-Pedro, Dubois, and Kokolski. Dusty Dogan L to R: Coach Moe Enright, R. Giguere, M. Klowan, Capt. B. Third Row: BASKETBALL WOONSOCKET 69 CLASSICAL 42 The winners had a 14 to 0 lead and were never in trouble. W.H.S. stars were Rosenberg and Dubois with 12 each; Gosselin with 11, and Aridano had 10 to finish things. WOONSOCKET 58 PAWTUCKET VOCAIONAL 61 W.H.S. caught flat footed. The Vokes had it all over our boys even though W.H.S. put up a good game fight. The top scorers were Aridano with 20, captain Bob Gosselin with 16 and little Mickey Klowen dunking 10. WOONSOCKET 56 CUMBERLAND 50 Villa Novans came from behind to pull the game out of the fire in the middle half. Lynch had 12, Aridano and Dubois 13 each and Goose” had a big 18 for a fabulous game. WOONSOCKET 65 DEERING 41 Woonsocket came out early in the game with foul shots as the main factor. Captain Bob Gosselin had 16, Aridano 14 and Rosenberg 12. It was a night for the fouls. WOONSOCKET 40 CENTRAL FALLS 56 The Villa Novans almost had the upset of the season but faltered in the final quarter. Nothing more to be said except that it was a good basketball game. Ray Dubois was tops with 12 and Bob Gosselin had 11. WOONSOCKET 47 FRANKLIN 45 A thriller down to the wire. W.H.S. spoils opening game for losers. Hare and Giguere scored twelve, Aridano eleven. Klowan, althuogh only scoring once played brilliantly. WOONSOCKET 51 CUMBERLAND 41 W.H.S. on the up-hill gave the invaders a rugged fight. Looking better all the time. Woonsocket controlled the back- boards which wjas a big factor. Gosselin, Dubois, Aridano, and Lynch held the rebounds. Gosselin was the high scorer with 20. WOONSOCKET 69 MOUNT PLEASANT 27 Easy time for W.H.S. Gosselin top scorer with 23, Dubois 12, Giguere 11, and Klowran 10. WOONSOCKET 41 MOUNT ST. CHARLES 51 Woonsocket loses a thriller. Just couldn’t stop the Hill-toppers. Captain Bob Gosselin great in defense had 19 points while Dubois another star performer had 12. WOONSOCKET 64 NORTH PROVIDENCE 45 Woonsocket couldn’t be stopped getting basket after basket. Ed Rosenberg had 15. Aridano, Dubois, and Gosselin added 10 each. WOONSOCKET 83 PAWTUCKET VOCATIONAL 51 Woonsocket smothers visitors really — really rolls it up. Aridano while playing only a little more than one half, scored 22. Others that shined were Rosenberg with 15 and Gosselin hit for 10. WOONSOCKET 53 DEERING 49 W.H.S. wins again by toppling a hard playing team. Aridano and Dubois high scorers with 17 and 12 respectively. WOONSOCKET 68 CENTRAL FALLS 86 W.H.S. defeated by undefeated five. Villa Novans just wouldn’t quit but they were no match for the winners. Gosselin and Dubois had 17 each while Aridano had 16. WOONSOCKET 50 CUMBERLAND 46 Woonsocket had to fight off a fine attack by the visitors to win this one but came through. Aridano led with 15, Gosselin and Dubois each had a dozen. WOONSOCKET 54 SACRED HEART 56 Woonsocket lost a heartbreaker when a shot was blocked to give the Hearts the win. It was a squeaker all the way. Ray Dubois top gunner with 15, Gosselin, 14, and Aridano got 10. WOONSOCKET 39 NORTH PROVIDENCE 37 Mike Aridano s four points in overtime was the deciding factor in a hard fought contest with W.H.S. coming out on top. Captain Bob Gosselin led the attack with 13 tallies while Aridano had 12. WOONSOCKET 42 MT. ST. CHARLES 43 W.H.S. lost with one second left as the Mounties scored on a one and one count. A terrific game all the way. Aridano was high with 12, but captain Bob Gosselin was close behind with 11. Bob Gosselin L to R: R. Gosselin, F. Lynch, J. Stolacz, N. Small, R. Brissette. Goalie Ray Trant gets second shutout. Very impressive in the cage. W.H.S. had to fight, but they won. WOONSOCKET 0 MOUNT ST. CHARLES 2 W.H.S. not so hot on offense; Defense was found to have a few weak spots. Two bright spots were Demers and Tellier. WOONSOCKET 1 CRANSTON 3 Ray Trant shines in the goal, but the VILLA NOVANS need more offensive punch. Fullam received credit for the goal. WOONSOCKET 2 BURRILLVILLE 2 The VILLA NOVANS just never say die. Fighting hard and clean all the way. They are able to come through with a tie. Trant had 17 saves to 7 for the Broncos. Sutcliffe scored the first goal on a short rebound and a Sutcliffe pass to Fullam was the final goal. WOONSOCKET 1 CRANSTON 5 Woonsocket defeated by a strong team. Hammann scores only goal on a long 45 footer. Bright spots in the game were the goal tending by Norm Lezy and the line trio of Demers, Sutcliffe, and Fullam. WOONSOCKET 3 BURRIVILLE 1 After seven year famine W.H.S., finally beat the Broncos. A great game, boys! Roger Dubois scored two of the goals and Gerry Morrisseau the other. Norm Lezy, the Goalie, blocked 11 shots. Tellier, Plante, Lauzon, Demers, Sutcliffe, Fullam, and DeCelles all played important parts in what was one of best victories in the history of W.H.S. WOONSOCKET 0 HOPE 6 W.H.S. just couldn’t get started. Had some pretty tough breaks. Tellier and Dubois had scoring opportunities but they couldn’t get by the Goalie. WOONSOCKET 0 LA SALLE 0 W.H.S. turns in another fine game giving LaSalle a hard time. Goalie, Ray Trant stole the show making some wonderful saves. Sutcliffe had the only scoring opportunity. WOONSOCKET 2 WARWICK 0 Goalie Ray Trant again shines in his fourth winning shutout. VILLA NOVANS win the final game of the season. Paul Lauzon and Roger Dubois had the scoring honors with Fullam assisting. WOONSOCKET 3 MOUNT ST. CHARLES 0 Goalie Ray Trant gets third shutout of the season. VILLA NOVANS really outshine the Hilltoppers. Roger Dubois had 2 goals to his credit and Ronie Fullam scored the other to be the H. S. stars. But everybody who played was really on his toes. W.H.S. looked like an entirely different team. They were great. WOONSOCKET 0 EAST PROVIDENCE 2 Woonsocket needs more scoring punch. Trant shines in good. WOONSOCKET 0 LA SALLE 6 The VILLA NOVANS just couldn’t stop the LaSalle men from scoring right from the start. It was LaSalle all the way. Sutcliffe and Trant were the W.H.S. standouts. When the score was 4 to 0, the coach, seeing that it was a lost cause, proceeded to put in all his players; that was the reason for the big score. L to R: Ray Trant, Norm Lezy. CROSS-COUNTRY Woonsocket’s Cross-Country team had victories over Coventry and Classical while the team finished second to Mt. Pleasant in a triangular meet with Barrington also participating. Losses were to Warwick, Bellingham and Mt. Pleasant in dual meets. Co-Captain Bill Smith, a Junior, proved a big surprise in the season. Smith running Cross-Country for the first time led Woonsocket in all its meets. He participated in the New Eng- land Championships held in Vermont and was named to the second All-State team. In state meet competition the Woonsocket harriers finished third in Class B, second in the Bruchshaw, and ninth Columbus Day and in the State Championship meet. This was a squeaker until the fifth when Dick Hammann's fly ball fell between 2 players and scored. A1 Cunningham was on second base. Harrington, Hammann, and Minot had the only hits. WOONSOCKET 11 MOUNT SAINT CHARLES 2 The VILLA NOVANS did a creditable job in whitewashing the Mounties. Harrington was troubled only in the first 3 innings. After that he was in complete control. Hammann, Harrington, and Guillet each had two hits. WOONSOCKET 0 BURRIVILLE 1 One of the best pitching duels in the state. Harrington gave only 3 hits, 2 walks, and fanned 6. None of the hits figured in the scoring. A walk, a force out, a stolen base, and a passed ball scored the tally. Harrington had the only hit although Reed and Duperron were robbed of extra base hits which might have made the difference. WOONSOCKET 10 CENTRAL FALLS 2 A1 Duperron started his first game of the season and did very good. The Blue jackets received only 3 hits and didn’t score until the last inning. Duperron fanned 12, walked 3 and hit 2 batters. Leading the hitters was Don Harrington with 4 for 4. At this time Don was leading hitter of the state with a .607 B.A. Minot, Reed, Guillet, and Hart each had 2. WOONSOCKET 7 NORTHBRIDGE 1 Harrington pitched first game. Hitter had 16 strikeouts, never in any trouble. Woonsocket had 6 hits, Duperron had 3, Guillet 2, and Cunningham 1. Good beginning in a tight class B campaign. WOONSOCKET 7 SACRED HEART 1 Harrington pitching again 6 hits and struck out 7. He was in trouble but got himself out very nicely. VILLA NOVANS had 9 hits. A1 Duperron had 4 and 4, Don Harrington 2 and 2, and Hammann, Minot, and Zarychta each had 1. WOONSOCKET 7 CUMBERLAND 4 One of the roughest games of the season even though the score does not look it. Harrington pitched himself out of some real tight spots and got 2 hits to add to the cause. Tagged for 8 hits struck out 7, Duperron leads attack again getting 3 hits followed by Cunningham, Reed, and Minot with 2 each. WOONSOCKET 6 PAWTUCKET VOCATIONAL 2 Reed started and was reached for 2 runs, gave 4 hits, walked 5, and hit 1. Harrington came in, walked 3 and was boss the rest fo the way. Hammann, Harrington, and Hart, each had 2 hits apiece. WOONSOCKET 2 MOUNT SAINT CHARLES 7 Don Harrington started out and was scored upon three times in the first inning, picking up single runs in the second and third and wrapping it up by getting two in the fourth. Don gave up 9 walks, 6 hits, and 7 runs. Duperron came on in the fourth with one hit but it was too late. Hart had two hits while Harrington, Minot, and Reed each had one. WOONSOCKET 0 BURRILLVILLE 3 Duperron lost another heartbreaker; he was reached for only 4 hits, walked 3 and struck out 2, but his teammates failed to hit at the right times. Minot, Guillet and Zarychta each had one hit. This was the first year that Woonsocket hasn’t had a team in the playoffs in six years. Third place, however, isn’t that bad, so let’s hope the boys can get back up there next year. The Seniors that will be going are: the battery, Don Harrington, who had a great season along with Walt Minot, and outfielders A1 Cunningham and Dale Reed. WOONSOCKET 1 SACRED HEART 2 A1 Duperron hooked up in one of the best schoolboy pitch duels of the season. Losing in the 12th inning when he walked in the winning run. Duperron walked 9, 3 intentional, struck out 13, and gave 5 hits. He had a few rough innings earlier in the game but worked his way out of them nicely. Guillet and Hart had 2 each, while Harrington and Reed each had one. WOONSOCKET 12 PAWTUCKET VOCATIONAL 3 Duperron worked the first 6 innings allowed 3 hits, 1 run and 3 bases on balls while fanning 7. The only bad inning was the sixth when he walked in a run. Until then no Voke player had reached second. Frank Marrah pitched the final inning giving 3 hits and 1 walk. He allowed 2 runs to cross the plate. Minot and Reed had 3 hits each while Harrington and Hart were close with 2 each. WOONSOCKET 3 NORTH PROVIDENCE 4 Don Harrington and his rival each had poor days for both were reached for 10 hits. Both had good control giving two walks each but it was just the hitters day. Only one man got more than one hit for No. Providence while Minot had 3, Guillet, Harrington, and Zarychta had 2 hits each.
