THE ORIGIN OF WOONSOCKET The origin of the name Woonsocket still does not stand out clearly. Its old Indian form is Woonesuckete, which is probably derived from the two Indian words, Woone —thunder, and Suckete—mists, meaning in composition, thundermist. When one imagines the falls thundering through the forest years ago, and sees the column of mist which arises from their foot, it is easy to believe that the explanation of the origin of Woonsocket is a true one. HORSESHOE FALLS In the summer of 1955, a great disastrous flood struck Woonsocket and took from our fair city its turbulent falls. Built in the shape of a horseshoe and thus named Horseshoe Falls, these falls, from which the original village which forms the nucleus of the present town takes its name, once attracted numerous visitors. Located in three different streams—the Blackstone and its tributaries, the Mill and the Peters rivers, Horseshoe Falls were constructed to restrain the anger of the rivers as they scattered ruin and spread ban on the banks of Woonsocket. The falls thundering through the solitude of the forest, the sight of the column of mist which arose from their spray, is now just a memory in the minds of Woonsocketers. 3
