■ BIRTHDAY CAKE 1957 Quiver The graduating class of 1957 honors you, the Quiver,” on your 50th anniversary. In your fifty years of existence, you have passed from a paper pamphlet to a soft padded cover. You have extended a welcome to all who have opened your covers. At first your literary value was great, while today all the memories are inscribed in pictures. We thank you for the kindness you have bestowed upon us and wish you continued success in the future. WOONSOCKET HIGH SCHOOL WOONSOCKET, RHODE ISLAND DEDICATION On this the fiftieth anniversary of the Quiver,” we, the class of 1957, wish to dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Charles A. Donlon, our principal, in appreciation for the devoted service you have rendered to us during our high school life. We could never fully express our gratitude, but this is our own small way of thanking you for the patience, love, and understanding you have shown to each and everyone of us. Your fatherly smile which during our high school days always meant forgiveness will live on in our memories as encouragement towards our success in whatever career we choose. Our departing wish is for your continued health and happiness, together with many more years among your beloved students at Woonsocket High School. 2 THE ORIGIN OF WOONSOCKET The origin of the name Woonsocket still does not stand out clearly. Its old Indian form is Woonesuckete, which is probably derived from the two Indian words, Woone —thunder, and Suckete—mists, meaning in composition, thundermist. When one imagines the falls thundering through the forest years ago, and sees the column of mist which arises from their foot, it is easy to believe that the explanation of the origin of Woonsocket is a true one. HORSESHOE FALLS In the summer of 1955, a great disastrous flood struck Woonsocket and took from our fair city its turbulent falls. Built in the shape of a horseshoe and thus named Horseshoe Falls, these falls, from which the original village which forms the nucleus of the present town takes its name, once attracted numerous visitors. Located in three different streams—the Blackstone and its tributaries, the Mill and the Peters rivers, Horseshoe Falls were constructed to restrain the anger of the rivers as they scattered ruin and spread ban on the banks of Woonsocket. The falls thundering through the solitude of the forest, the sight of the column of mist which arose from their spray, is now just a memory in the minds of Woonsocketers. 3 MR. JOSEPH F. DOWLING MR. YOUTH GOVERNMENT DAY SCHOOL COMMITTEE MAYOR Youth Government Day will long be remembered by Edward Morin, for he was elected to the office of Mayor of Woonsocket for that day. Accompanied by Mayor Kevin K. Coleman, Edward learned the fundamentals of Woonsocket government and the problems that confront a mayor. The inaugural speech of Mayor Morin, who was present at the Council meeting, was heard over WWON. This was a very important day for the youth of Woonsocket High School and of Mount St. Charles Academy. The students on the School Committee met at the Administration Building on North Main Street with Mr. Edward J. Condon, Superintendent of Schools. Carl McCardin acted as Superintendent of Schools for that day. The group discussed the functions of the school committee and the improvement of elementary schools. The importance of such acts for the progress of a community was stressed. A MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATING CLASS Graduation Day is a day of rejoicing because it means that you have attained that goal which has been your ultimate ambition through these long years in school. This is called commencement day, for it is the beginning of a new life for you. Your high school days are over and although they may have seemed sometimes boring and arduous, you will on reflection realize that they truly were happy days, free from responsibility and anxiety. You are now at the juncture in life's journey where you must give serious thought to your future and the realities of life. Many of you will pursue your education further through colleges and will enter into professional and scientific careers while others will be absorbed into industry and business and assume responsibilities soon after graduation. In the not too distant future some of you will marry and will take on the many duties and obligations of family life. Your teachers are anxious for your success and are always pleased and proud when they hear of one of our graduates who has distinguished himself and brought honor to his school. You should never forget the sacrifices your parents have made for you so that you might get a good start in life which advantages some parents never enjoyed. Let us always be a credit to our parents, our school and our community. The character you should have formed and the associations you have made while in school should serve you well in making you valuable members of society and loyal citizens of this great democracy. Let this be your resolve — to cherish and appreciate this high school education, let it be an incentive to you to always hold fast to high ideals — let the training you have received inculcate into your minds and hearts those noble virtues of love and devotion to God and country. 54 cruwn lylla tf , J956 Front row (I. to r.): Janice Pomfret, Roland St. Germain; Esther Felicio, Joseph Cadieux; Barbara Mahedy, Robert Beaudet. The class had voted and chosen Blue Moon as the theme. French blue, powder blue, and white had been chosen by the color committee. Twenty-five students from the decorating committee had come the night before to set up the skeleton frames upon which would be hung the decorations in the gym. Now, as more seniors had been excused by the sympathetic teachers, to work on the transformation, the air was filled with expectant joy. All worked hard — hanging, tacking, gluing and cutting. By hard steady work, and with the cooperation of all, the gym had the appearance of a beautiful blue pavillion by 2:30. 56 “ttftiue t Uoon ” V ▼ . k -t . A SENIOR PROM QUEEN WITH SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT Rodman Van Brocklyn, Nancy Scott Phyl and Van Nancy and Billy QUEEN NANCY SCOTT Charlene and A1 Pat and Phil SENIOR PROM The winter night was cold and snowy, but that did not dampen the spirits of the seventy-five senior couples that attended their Senior Prom on February first, 1957. Outside the storm raged, but who thought about that as the couples glided around the floor of this blue heaven, which was the hardly recognizable gym. It had become another world, with the music and joy of the night the large paper moon, and sparkling stars suspended from the blue and white sky overhead, seemed to come to life. Who would have recognized these students — the girls surrounded by yard upon yard of some frothy material, and the boys dressed in their best — as the ones who worked so hard all day to decorate the gym? Time for the Grand March arrived, and with it the choosing of the Queen of the Prom by the judges. As ogr class president placed a crown of roses on the Queen's head, her attendants stood by. The large beautiful cake was then cut, and refreshments were served. All too soon after that it was time to leave this wonderful place, and to brave the weather outside. Born in a log cabin, Abraham raised himself with dignity to the office of President of the United States of America. He believed that all men are created equal; grieving at their sorrows and rejoicing in their happiness, Lincoln was always one of his people. Just as Lincoln dedicated the battlefield at Gettysburg as a final resting place for the men who died so that a united nation might live, so shall we dedicate these pictures as undying monuments to a truly great and deserving man. Lincoln will always live in the hearts of true Americans. 60 SUPERVISING THE SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM (I. to r.): Mrs. Madeline A. Dulac, Director; Mrs. Jay Maher, Secretary. During the 1956 season, Bob Jacobs and Don Harrington shared pitching honors, while Louie Ballou, Pat Reilly, Bruce Richmond, Lloyd Richmond, and Walt Scott shared batting honors. The team had little difficulty with the competition in the Northern Division. West Warwick defeated Woonsocket in the twelfth inning in the quarter finals of the State Playoffs. Although many fine players were lost via graduation, Don Harrington, Dick Ham-mann, A1 Duperron, Walt Minot, A1 Cunningham, Dennis Hart, and Ed Wacker will be returning as veterans. Barring injuries, Woonsocket should make it their fourth straight divisional crown. 72 Big Chief of the Sports Tribe FOOTBALL SQUAD Back row (I. to r.): R. O'Rourke, B. Tarmey, S. Pernini, M. FOOTBALL Woonsocket High experienced one of its disappointing seasons in 1956, depleted by the graduation of 12 first string players out of 30 members of the 1955 squad, and by injuries to several key players. High School was indeed fortunate to score three victories in nine games. Undoubtedly the inability of Reed, Volpe, and Chofay to play a complete season Why did you leave us, Mr. Toppa? would have resulted in reversal of the victories and defeats. The low point of the season was reached when Mount won its first game from Woonsocket in fifteen years. Despite all these handicaps, Woonsocket aided by spirit and determination made a creditable showing. What's the big attraction? I was dreaming of a hot rod like the souped-up jalopy you have your eyes on. I wanted to hear the jingle of money in my pockets . . . money to spend on movies, ice-cream sodas, and car parts — even money to burn! Does this sound familiar? It should because I was a teen-ager then, just as you are now. But that was twelve years ago— Almost at the end of my freshman year, I decided my wants for material possessions were more important than my future need for a high school education. Jobs were plentiful in 1945, so I worked for a couple of months, and then the novelty of no more homework, no more books wore off, and I was again looking for something novel to do. I was an important teen-ager, a typical product of an unsettled world . . . the phrase had a stirring sound and gave me an idea — I would join the Army and see the world. The Army wasn't particularly concerned about arranging a travelogue to suit me. They needed men to guard the Japanese prisoners in the South Pacific islands, so that's where I was sent. The almost two years I spent in the Engineers couldn't compare with the South Pacific of Broadway fame, and I was discharged from this outpost in June, 1947. I returned to Woonsocket older by only two years, but I was no longer seeking adventure, glamor, or thrills. I was ready to settle down to the serious work of making a living, and living a good life. In a short time I was working steadily and making good wages. Then I met the girl of my dreams and we were married. The years were happy ones and our family increased to include a mischievous but lovable little boy and a sweet little girl. About a year ago, the urge to better myself gave me the idea to apply for a State Police position. I’d been thinking about it for some time, and now seemed to be as good a time as any to try out for the job. I guess you know what happened. I got turned down cold for lack of education. This really did it. Last September I registered my son in the first grade and I re-registered in the tenth grade, and 1 intend to go on through the eleventh and twelfth grades until I get my hands on that much-coveted diploma. The job of a married-man-with-a-family going to school isn't an easy one by any means. I wish Congress would pass a law extending the twenty-four hour day to a thirty-hour day ... I'd use the extra six hours to s-l-e-e-p! As it is now, my school day is from 8 to 2:30 p.m. I work from 4-12 after which I try to concentrate on my homework to the wee hours of the morning. It's been real rough sledding, but I know it will be well worth the effort to reach my goal of a high school diploma. It's only when I hear you teen-agers boast of cutting classes, copying your homework and complaining about having to go to school and how much you hate it, that I'd like to say what I’m thinking: Crazy kids! You never know what an education means until it's too late.” So if you'll allow this wise old veteran to give you some hard-learned advice, it's just this: Make the most of your educational opportunities now or you’ll learn to your bitter disappointment that of all words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: It might have been! 79 p Left side, back to front: Francis Volpe, Andre Hogue. The Indian on this page is a reproduction of the Indian which was pictured on the first Quiver issued in 1907. Through the fifty years of The Quiver, an Indian has always found a place in our book. On this, our 50th ANNIVERSARY, we, the members of the Quiver Literary Board, felt that it would be most fitting to carry the tradition of the Indian theme. 82 FIND YOURSELF } If r3_eile -n-duiaSTeaunine Allard ■% f- . $ 0k ■ t Pat Ames Joan Auclalr “a' Diane Boucher i! ■ ly Burrows r oil one Bousquet _______| Wayne Bailey • ' g HTon Chub Velma Bienl- rie Maurice BlouinH Thelma Brur.ettl $ : M § fi , i L J ck Calhoun Connie Carey John Danko ' :.r _ t jjL 3 — ■ • o r b r r Joan Silas ther ?elicio . b Barbara Fella Carol Feenstra illo la bo mi Rachel Fagnant A Arlene Cnrceou m t Ct‘ L} ® tl f 0P Gendron Judy uiod h ?B i . jSleanor Kurd Richard Granolinif 7 Tr;'. iP Diane Kamo is .rolHerc jJ Janet Lanoure x e 3onnie Leaardo Janes I iller my 'in.n Van Brooklyn • i Walter Finot • lomie 1 aser '’1 % n ■ 4 x nl Vllma Tanfini 'ob Sawyer Simone Bousaue t John Wad© HVI jNA lf •ol peroux Vilma Tanfnni „ Iter i-inot n Salome ------------------------ V r - Vi c nni© Lesard J Arlene Carceau yilma Tanfani Francis O'Keefe Sandy Teevenc 4 V iet Lar.oi ™ rJ'H 3arbara Felice Judy ic.erinF Bemie Kilcllre W _.w. _J i Je v Phyllis Judy Stoyk .
