It took about 15 minutes to get to the offices of I 'Union St. Jean-Baptisre d'Amerique, where an exhibition, France Comes to Rhode Island, was on display. French authors, explorers, statesmen, newspapers, books and magazines were on display. Rochambeau came up from Newport, while Evangeline stopped in on her way down the coast. Among others, there was also a booth showing the French population in the various cities of the state. It was a tres interessant exhibit. Tbovan. Editor ..................................... Coach Toppa had quite a rebuilding problem on his hands. Led by co-captains Art Sabourin and Bob Bedard the Villa Novans ended their season with a satisfactory record of three wins and four losses. Coach John Toppa and Ed Juny Walsh did an outstanding job in shifting the lineups and strengthening our weak spots. Look to next year’s team to be a powerhouse. WARWICK 6 — W(X)NS(X:KET 0 Round Robin exhibition,— Villa Novans made a surprisingly good showing against a strong class A' team. We penetrated to their five yard line, but lost the ball on downs. DF LA SALLE 2ft-W(X)NSOCKFTO W x nsocket s inexperience was the deciding factor. Too bad we didn't play them at the end of the season. We would have won. CLASSICAL 19 — W(X)NSOCKET 7 Classical, raking advantage of Woonsocket's fumbles, scores an upset against the victory hungry Villa Novans. W(X)NS()C:KFT 12 — TOLMAN O The Villa Novans pull a major upset of the season by jarring rhe touch Tolman team from the unbeaten ranks. Jacobs and Mathieu were the stars of the game with end Andy Bilodeau shifted to halfback, strengthening the offense. Art Sabourin and Brouillette were the outstanding linemen of the day. ST RAPHAEL 3K — WOONSOCKET 0 The Saints speedy backs anti heavy line found no trouble in trouncing the bewildered Villa Novan tribe. Enough said. W(X)NSOCKET I — WESTERLY 13 Bilodeau. Jacobs. Dupont, and Chofay were the scoring punches giving Woonsocket it's second decisive victory. Sabourin. Bedard, and Demers starred the line. WEST WARWICK 6 — W(X)NSOCKET 0 So close yet so far. Woonsocket is again stopped on the three yard line robbing us of an upset to end all upsets. One pass from quarterback to all state end Ron Begos for the touchdown led to the scoring of the day. Other than that Woonsocket outran and outplayed last year's champs. A real heartbreaker. W(X)NS(X:KET 7 — MOUNT ST. CHARLES 2 The Mounties coming up with it's best team in years nearly ended the fourteen year hex. As always the Villa Novan had it when they needed it. Art Sabourin, the winner of the most valuable player award stopped the Mounties on the two yard line to save the game for Park Place lads. PAWTUCKET WEST 6 — WOONSOCKET 0 Two inches of snow on the playing field slowed the game to a walk. West scored early and from then on neither team could do much. I wonder what would happen on a dry day? WOONSOCKET 0 — BURRILVILLE 0 The tribe terminated the season in a blaze of glory by holding the heavily favored Broncos to a scoreless tie. Bilodeau. the winner of the most valuable player award, gained more yardage than the whole Burrilville team put together, while O. J. Lindsay broke through the Burrilville line time and time again making most of the tackles for the filed up Woonscxket club. The Broncos were not allowed in Villa Novan s thirty yard line while Woonsocket made two serious scoring threats and were racing down the field for a third when the final gun went off. 62 BILODEAU LEGS IT AROUND LEFT END Woonsocket’s Andy Bilodeau picked up seven yards in the first period on this play against Mount. The bi j boy lead-ine interference is Co-Capt. Art Sabourin Other Woonsocket players are Bob Jacobs (12) and Lloyd Richmond (33). HE PLAYED A GREAT GAME A1 Matthews, Mount's speedy halfback, reeled off nine yards on this play before bein ; knocked off his feet by Joe Brouillette (74) and Ronnie Dupont (30). The other Moun-tie is Bob Desjardins (16). The fifth” man is The Call cameraman. THE VICTORY SMILES WERE BRIGHT . Woonsocket Hinh’s coach Johnny Toppa and his two co-captams. Bob Bedard left, and Arthur Sabourin. had every reason to smile after yesterday s victory. Bedard is holding the Chamber of Commerce championship trophy, and Sabourin the most valuable player award which he won. ITS GETTING TO BE A HABIT . . Woonsocket has retained possession of the Chamber of Commerce city championship trophy for the past 14 years. Co-Capts. Arthur Sabourin, left, and Bob Bedard, on the shoulders of happy teammates, receive the trophy from William E. La Fond of the Chamber. -I- 1956 BASEBALL Determined to match bsr year’s Interscholastic League's Northern Division championship, 32 Villa Novan athletes showed up at the early 1956 baseball practice sessions. HOCKEY This year for the first time in Woonsocket High’s history our hockey team, coached by Mr. Lavailee, defeated Mt. St. Charles, our bitter rival, by the score of 4-0 and 4-1. Although Mr. Lavailee lost his entire first line via graduation, the team gave a good account of themselves. With a little luck they could have gone all the way to the New England playoffs. The Villa Novan had the identical record as that of last year’s winning team. With five wins and three defeats. However, the scoring punch exhibited by our pucksters has not been equaled by any other WHS’ Hockey Teams. With 39 goals for and 18 against, they showed why they were definite contenders for the state playoffs. In the quarter-finals of the State Playoffs the Villa Novans were defeated by an unusually strong Hope team. Yet, the team never stopped trying and gave a good battle to the last minute. Creating a winter wonderland, a soft blanket of sparkling snow settled gently upon all of God's dozing creations. The snow patted everything in sight with a powder-puff illusion from tall and stately trees to knee-high shrubs. A sudden breeze rustled through the trees and captured the diminutive flakes, sending them whizzing about into a maze of utter confusion. As the swift snow captured and shaped me into a '’make-believe'' snowman, I imagined that the immaculate, star-studded flakes were being poured from millions and millions of Ivory Snow boxes. This was the time when all were ready to detach themselves from their brisk and busy lives to pause and admire God at work. —Constance Norris ’56 FIVE SETS OF TWINS Betsy and Linda Farlander, Seniors.
