Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1953 volume: “
In this era of sentimental, romantic, and tearful music, we have likened our QUIVER to a record album an album of melodious memories. Our album will contain the many tempos of our march through high school — the strains of droning recitations, stirring victory songs, dreamy prom waltzes, and finally the stately march down the aisle to Pomp and Circumstance. Each one of us will be a note, a line of music, a tune some perhaps more vibrant than others. There will be a mixture of gaiety, sadness, wistfulness and frivolity blended together to create the W. H. S. RECORD ALBUM of 1953. THE QUIVER 1953 WOONSOCKET HIGH SCHOOL Woonsocket Rhode Island C QfiTi ADELARD PAULHUS DEDICATION Meet a man who has always endeavored to do his best during his more than thirty years of service to Woonsocket High. FOOTBALL Ready, 1-2-3-4, and Woonsocket is off to another football season. In its first game, an exhibition, Woonsocket lost to Pawtucket by the score of 20-7. Woonsocket's only score came as a result of a pass from Martin to Ondis, with Martin kicking the point after the TD. In its first league game against Classical the Villa Novans dropped a 7-6 thriller at Barry Field. With the score 7-0 in the last quarter, Martin, on the Woonsocket 38, threw a long pass to Notarangelo, who eluded two Classical defenders and scored. The placement was no good and that eventually meant the game. Unable to get its offense clicking, Woonsocket suffered its second Class B League loss 19-0 at the hands of De La Salle. Notarangelo provided the only spark, racing 58 yards before being brought down, where the attack stalled. The Savariamen suffered their third straight Class B loss dropping a 37-6 decision to West Warwick. The Villa Novans' only tally came when Guard Didion intercepted a pass on the invaders' 4 yard line and stepped into the end zone. In a non-league encounter with Hope, Woonsocket won 12-6 at the former's field. Having recovered from injuries. Bill Somers moved into the back field and scored both touchdowns. No particular Woonsocket lineman was outstanding, as all played equally well. The work of the defensive unit was terrific! FOOTBALL TEAM Standing: N. Winn, M. Rousselle, V. Cunningham, R. Comeau, D. Pacheco, G. Didion, P. Loliberte, J. Taylor, D. Ponu, G. Ondis, D. SufFoletto. 3rd Row: R. Murphy, D. Harrington, R. Mei. 2nd Row: D. Paulhus, N. loforte, W. Robitaille, J. Notarangelo, J. Meeting an unbeaten, untied, and unscored upon Aldrich eleven, Woonsocket went down to defeat, 20-0. The defensive team was outstanding, allowing only one score during first half. Somers and Notarangelo were Woonsocket's consistent ground gainers, while Didion and Dan Panu, along with the rest of the defense, did a good job. Outplaying its rival in every department, Woonsocket toppled Gordon, 13-7, to chalk up its first Class B league victory of the season. Woonsocket's first TD came in the first period when Notarangelo broke through left tackle and ran 36 yards for the score. Dan Panu's recovery of a fumble on the Gorton 39-yard line set up the winning score. Martin scored from the 21 on an off tackle slant and kicked the extra point. Displaying a great defense, Woonsocket won its second Class B game, defeating Westerly 6-0. The only score came as the result of a 30 yard end around play by Ondis. Scoring two third-period touchdowns, the Savariamen continued their domination over Mt. St. Charles by chalking up a 14-0 triumph before 3,000 spectators V at Barry Field. The first TD came when the Villa Novans marched 61 yards, Martin scoring from the four-yard line and then kicking the extra point. The second score came when Rousselle, on the Mount 18, slashed off tackle and didn't stop until he reached the end zone. Martin's kick was good. A highlight of the game was the terrific blocking of the Woonsocket offensive and the great stand of the defense unit. It was a clean, hard-fought game, with Woonsocket superior in every department. Before the poorest Thanksgiving crowd in many a year, Woonsocket and Pawtucket West battled to a scoreless deadlock at Barry Field. The Villa Novans had a wonderful scoring opportunity in the last two minutes when they reached the three-yard line as the result of a pass from Martin to Ondis, but two penalties and a fumble ruined their scoring chances. With the tie, Woonsocket gained the distinction of being the second best defensive unit in Class B circles, giving up only 91 points. Woonsocket wound up in fourth place in Class B, with a record of three wins, four losses, and a tie. BASKETBALL Despite the fact that Woonsocket High finally had its new gym, the basketball team, although it fought hard all the way, finished the 52-53 season without a league victory. Woonsocket's lack of height was perhaps the main reason for its poor showing. The only tall man on the team, Don Paulhus, did a good job of rebounding, but often left the game via the five foul route. Woonsocket's only victories were two exhibition games, in which they downed the Alumni and Mount Pleasant. The Mount Pleasant victory was a well earned one, which ended with a score of 51-46. Larry Gaboury led the Villa Novan attack by dropping in 16 points, while Roger Morrisseau and Johnny Notarangelo added 12 and 10 points respectively. At the end of the first quarter Woonsocket en- 60 Coach and Captains joyed an 11-10 lead, and they were still ahead, 28-26, at halftime. During the second half, Woonsocket played great ball as they captured rebound after rebound, and hit from the outside with excellent precision. Finally, Woonsocket staved off a last quarter rally by Mount Pleasant to wrap up the victory. Mount St. Charles won the city championship for the second consecutive year as they downed the Villa Novans 50-34 in the first game and 73-46 in the second contest. The tall, springy center, Lionel Jenkins, was instrumental in both Mount victories. Although the Woonsocket players — Martin, Paulhus, Notarangelo, and Morrisseau — fought hard throughout the game, they were unable to stop the Mounties. During the latter part of the season. Coach Marrah used many JV players. These boys looked good during the short time they played and should improve with experience. With four regular players graduating, things look bleak for next year. Even though his team wasn't among the best in the league. Coach Marrah is to be congratulated for his never-say-die spirit and the fine job he has done. 2nd Row: Mgr. C. Kittredge, R. Cosovont, J. CROSS COUNTRY The Woonsocket High School harriers were unsuccessful in retaining their Class B Cross Country crown, which had been theirs for five consecutive years. Undefeated in Class B competition all season, Woonsocket was upset by a strong Barrington team, 38-41, in the championship meet. In their first dual meet, W.H.S. humbled Hope, 15-50. In their next victory against North Providence, eleven Villa Novans flashed across the finish line before any of their opponents. Their third triumph was a 15-52 score against Westerly. Dick Desrosiers, a winner for the second time, was followed by Scanlon, Chartier, Darcey, Gardella, and Lauzon. Continuing to crush all opposition, Woonsocket upset Moses Brown as five Betagh-men were among the first seven to hit the tape. Captain George Scanlon, the first Woonsocket runner home and the third in the race, was followed by Chartier, Gardella, Darcey, and Blais. Paced by speedy Fred Gardella, Woonsocket next trounced East Providence 19-56. Emery Chartier was first man across in the defeat over Mount Pleasant, the Providence city championship team. Against LaSalle B, Gardella and Darcey finished first and second to give Woonsocket the win 18-42. Coach Betagh's harriers copped first place in the Bruckshaw race to give our team its first carnival championship. Fred Gardella, in fourth place, was the first Woonsocket runner across, while teammates Darcey, Desrosiers, Chartier, and Blais wound up sixth, ninth, tenth, and twelfth respectively. Racing to its ninth straight win of the season, Woonsocket downed St. Raphael 25-36. By gaining third place in the All-State Meet, Woonsocket earned the right to compete in the New England Cross Country Championship Meet, in which the Villa Novans finished sixth. In their last dual meet, Woonsocket easily defeated Cranston 23-42. Woonsocket placed three men on the Class B All-Star Team for 1952. Bill Darcey was named to the first team, while Fred Gardella and Ray Blais were selected for the second team. OUR NEW GYM 63 Bock Row: Co-Capt. N. Gill, R. Corlson, M. Lambert, J. Interscholastic Hockey League. In their first league game the Villa Novans were beaten by Burrillville, defending state champs, 4-1, despite the brilliant goal-tending of freshman Dan Panu. Another frosh, Earl O'Dell scored the only goal for Woonsocket. Facing a strong Hope team the following night, Woonsocket was defeated 10-5. Goal getters were Gill, Darcey, Rouselle, O'Dell, and Pouliot. With the first line scoring three goals and goalie Dan Panu playing a great game, the Villa Novans downed East Providence 4-2. Playing their fourth game in a row, Woonsocket lost to a fast skating North Providence team 4-1. Darcey was the lone scorer. A successful penalty shot in a five minute overtime period gave Cranston a 4-3 edge over a hard fighting Woonsocket team. Darcey and Gemski were the lamp-lighters for W.H.S. In their next game against strong La Salle, the Villa Novans, unable to hold an early lead, were drubbed 7-3. Woonsocket won its second league victory of the season when they edged Mount Pleasant 4-3, with O'Dell scoring a goal in the closing minutes of the third period. In the big game of the year the Villa Novans held Mt. St. Charles to a 3-3 deadlock. Woonsocket started off in great fashion as Darcey and Gill scored in the first period, but the Mount fought back minutes left. Gill scored to create the tie. Woon-and held a 3-2 lead in the last period. With only minutes left. Gill scored to create the tie. Woonsocket had previously beaten the Mount 2-0 in a Round Robin tilt with Gill scoring both goals. Playing their last game of the season, the Villa Novans were subdued by St. Raphael 4-1; Darcey scored the only goal. With most of the veterans graduating. Coach Lavollee will depend on Panu, Dubois, O'Dell, and Pouliot as a nucleus for next year's team. W.H.S. BASEBALL SEASON - 1952 Inspired by the great pitching of Doug Hopper and Pete Glode and the sensational hitting of the entire team, the Woonsocket High baseball team won the Northern Rhode Island Baseball Championship and then went on to capture the Rhode Island Schoolboy Championship. The Villa Novans had a remarkable season, losing only two games. Their regular season record was 12 WON, 1 LOST. The local boys downed Sacred Heart 2-0 in their first league encounter, then swamped Central Falls 14-5 before bowing to Cumberland. Woonsocket then compiled fourteen consecutive victories by defeating No. Providence, 7-3; Mt. St. Charles, 9-2; Burrillville, 6-5; Central Falls, 16-2; Sacred Heart, 5-2; Cumberland, 22-3; Pawtucket Vocational 21-3; No. Providence 13-1; and Mt. St. Charles 9-6. With a slim chance of overtaking the Villa Novans, Burrillville tangled with the Savariamen at Harrisville. Woonsocket outslugged the opposition, 13-11, to take the Northern Division Title. Next, Woonsocket defeated Gorton, 11-1, and then went on to beat Colt Memorial in the semi-finals, eking out a 13-inning 2-1 thriller in the first game and whitewashing their foe 5-0 in the second game. In the final game W.H.S. handed the Burrillville Broncos a 3-1 setback. Doug Hopper had an 8-0 record and Pete Glode a 9-1 score for the season. Glode, Hopper, Swiech, and Belknap were chosen for the first team of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League. Berthod was named to the second team. The 1953 roster doesn't look too bright with only two regulars, Darcey and Rousselle, remaining. This will be Woonsocket's rebuilding year, with pitching the main problem. TRACK 1952 Last year's track team participated in only three meets. Woonsocket won a dual meet with Gorton and lost by four points a closely contested meet with Westerly. The Villa Novans also participated in the Kingston Meet. Capt. Moe Martin starred in weight events scoring in the double brackets in both dual meets. George Scanlon ran well in the mile, taking a first against Westerly in that event. Other outstanding performers were Ray Blais, Emery Chartier, Gordon Ondis and Bob Comeau. All these boys will participate in the 1953 season. 65 MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED John Trepanier and Olga Gemski BEST ALL-ROUND AND MOST POPULAR Attilia Delasanta and Edmund Martin 66 BEST ATHLETES Edmund Martin and Coach Savaria MOST TYPICAL Mario DiNunzio and Constance Duhamei 67 HANDSOMEST BOY AND PRETTIEST GIRL Maurice Lambert and Joyce Gaiga CLASS ARTISTS Rino Conti and Frances Faneuf Public Relations Messengers MV SENIOR ACTIVITIES CONRAD ADAM . . .
