Pa ieriU 2 They may not be wise as the wisest, they may not be clever or strong. There'll be times you will think that their counsel is narrow or utterly wrong. You will think when they frown upon pleasures which you are so eager to share That your father and mother who love you are merely an old-fashioned pair. But this they would have you remember, whatever they say or do It is not of themselves they are thinking - their thoughts are all centered in you. —Edgar A. Guest 4 Reprinted with permission of author The Reilly and Lee Co., Chicago DEDICATION [E, the Class of 1952, gratefully dedicate our QUIVER to Our Parents, as an expression of appreciation for their patient sympathy and as a reminder to ourselves that through their moral teachings, we are able to take our proper place in the world. ☆ ☆ ☆ 5 FOREWORD Movieland — the place of dreams come true — where stars and stuntmen, producers and publicity agents strive to meet a constant challenge. Woonsocket High has its stars — the seniors of 1952. Our spectacular athletes serve as stuntmen, the juniors and freshmen completing the scene as understudies and extras. Guiding the cast are directors and producers, the members of our able faculty. We, as graduates, will face a constant challenge — that of using well the knowledge, training, and experience gained during our memorable high school years. 6 -• ■ • ’• y r•■■ •-. ‘ .• 5 iv v ' ;' y . • •, '« •■JV . r. .• • .‘! -■' s ■ . . sVi i ' iV • • -; ’ - • w ' . • S •.. 1 Vav-.. .: , • .• ,•• % ,| | H , VW ■ -f. v • mi M X; Z; •'. 1 •• . ■.; . •; ' . «' '.' . A quick snap from center, and Woonsocket is off to another successful league season. In their first league encounter, the Sa-variamen showed some of the power that made them a top threat all through the season. With Tom Martin scoring once and Peter Glode twice, Woonsocket thumped Classical (19-7) on the latter's field. Although Woonsocket out-rushed, out-passed, and out-kicked De La Salle, the Crusaders scored more touchdowns and downed the Villa Novans (25-13) in Woonsocket's second Class B game. It was a thriller all the way. Early in the first period Glode intercepted a De La Salle pass and raced 60 yards for a T. D. The Crusaders immediately retaliated with a score and the extra point to give them a 7-6 edge. In the second period the scoring was reversed, and the half ended in a 13-13 deadlock. But that proved to be all for the Villa Novans, as the Crusaders picked up two more touchdowns to go on to victory. 34 Dominating the play throughout the game, West Warwick's undefeated eleven swamped Woonsocket 32-0. The Villa No-vans were on the defensive all through the game, and only once did Woonsocket show any signs of life. Just before the half ended, the Savariamen managed to get the ball as far as the 6-inch line of West Warwick but the whistle blew before the ball could be carried over. During the second period Tom Martin, stellar back of Woonsocket, received an injury which kept him out for the rest of the season. With three of its best backs — Martin, Swiech, and Bebeau — out for the season because of shoulder injuries, Woonsocket was forced to shift from the T-formation to the single wing. The non-league game with Hope, which Woonsocket won in an upset, (13-7) was the first time in several seasons that the Villa Novans used the single wing. Bill Keefe and Pete Glode each scored, with Doug Hopper kicking the extra point. Woonsocket next took on a big powerful Aldrich eleven, but by alternating between the T and the single wing, the Villa Novans cut the visitors down to size by a score of 33-7. Pete Glode enjoyed a great day in this game. Besides scoring, Pete threw a long touchdown pass to Hopper and made a lot of gains on the ground, one of them an 84-yard run that set up another T. D. Aldrich's lone tally came in the first period and put them momentarily ahead, but after that Woonsocket was never headed. 35 Still working from the single wing, the Villa Novans made it three s'raigh' by drubbing a tough Gorton team (20-0). Early in the first period Don La Roche caught the opposition flatfooted and raced 61 yards for a touchdown, which was sufficient to beat the visitors. Pete Glode chipped in with two T. D.'s and Don Di Spirito kicked the two extra points. The real credit for the victory, however, went to the Woonsocket line. Opening holes in the Gorton defenses and superb blocking contributed toward the Villa Novan's victory. Striking hard and often, Woonsocket rallied to another league victory by trimming Westerly (33-0). Unleashing a powerful attack, mixed with some sharp passing, the Villa Novans completely dominated the game from the start and were never in danger. Glode and Keefe each carried the pigskin over twice, and Doug Hopper once, with Di Spirito adding the three extra points to complete the Woonsocket scoring. It was the fourth straight victory for Woonsocket since shifting to the single wing, and both fans and players were sure that they could beat De La Salle and West Warwick if given another chance. Hitting hard and charging fast, Woonsocket again won the City Football Championship by trouncing Mt. St. Charles (33-0) at Barry Field. The game which, by the request of Mount, has been shifted from Thanksgiving to Columbus Day was a complete sellout with over 3,500 fans present to cheer their favorites on. There was no 36 scoring in the first quarter, but in the second Keefe heaved a long pass to Somers and it was good for a touchdown. Intercepting a Mount pass, Glode carried it to the 27, and a few plays later Hopper crossed the goal line. Di Spirito converted for the extra point. La Roche intercepted another Mount pass, and later Glode carried the ball across to make the score 19-0. Stopping a Mount advance cold, Woonsocket took over on the Saint's 40. Four plays brought it to the five, and from there Pete scored again with Di Spirito kicking the point to make the score 26-0. Moe Martin intercepted a pass and Billy Somers carried the ball to the 11; Pete Glode then made his third touchdown, and again Di Spirito delivered to end the scoring at 33-0. After winning 5 straight, Woonsocket suffered a setback at the hands of Pawtucket West. The 14-13 score was the result of previous scouting of Woonsocket by West. Glode and Hopper each contributed a touchdown to the losing cause, but the Villa Novans were fighting all the way. The victory enabled West to gain a tie with Woonsocket for third place in Class B football. Pete Glode was named to the second team of The Providence Journal's All-Rhode Island Schoolboy Elevens. Mentioned on All-Class B teams were Hagiperos, Di Spirito, Hopper, Santucci, and Moe Martin. 37 BASKETBALL TEAM I. Scott, R. Smith, E. Marrah, L. Gaboory, J. Swiech, R. Santucci, R. Theroux, D. Tanacea, R. Dwyer, F. Marrah. D. longtin, D. Hopper, D. Paulhus, Co. Capts. P. Glode, J. Belknap, R AAorrisseau, E. Martin, R Neri. RASKEsTBALt 38 BASKETBALL Although Woonsocket didn't get into the win column very often. Coach Marrah's 1952 charges were in there fighting all the way. The addition of two tall men, Gus Santucci and Doug Hopper, gave High School a better chance on the boards, but the Class A League still proved to be too much for the Villa Novans. Woonsocket did pretty well in exhibition contests, ending with a 4-3 record by defeating North Providence, Lockwood, the Alumni, and Killingly (second game); and dropping close ones to Pawtucket East, La Salle, and Killingly (first game). High School won only two games in league competition, the first a thrilling 58-57 victory over Mt. St. Charles, and the second, a 53-48 upset over Pawtucket West late in the season. The Marrahmen would probably have fared better in the other games, but the tall men and the high scorers frequently left the game via the five-foul route, the team's undoing. Such was the case in Woonsocket's second game with Mt. St. Charles, which ended in an astounding upset by the lowly last-place Mount under-dogs. Johnny Swiech and Pete Glode left late in the third quar- 4- ter with Woonsocket leading, 33-30. Without their services the team was lost, and the Mounties took the game 49-43. One of the high points of the game came toward the end when the flashy Satch Wiitz of Mount completely outfared the Villa Novans and scored seven consecutive points to sew up the game for the Hill-toppers. This win threw the teams into a tie for the City Championship, so arrangements were made for a playoff game to settle the issue. The game was played on Mount's Court, and it was a rough and tumble affair. Coach Heinie Murray's charges enjoyed quarter leads of 11-8, 28-18, and 40-27. Pete Glode, playing his last game for High School, as were Swiech, Belknap, Hopper, and Santucci, turned in a whale of a game, scoring twenty points and making and breaking plays on the floor, but could not stem the tide of Mount's scoring, with the result that Woonsocket lost, 57-46. Things look bleak for next year's team, since there is only one regular, Moe Martin, returning. However, there are some fine prospects coming up from the JV squad. Coach Marrah deserves a great deal of credit for the fine job he has done, and you can be pretty sure that his team will be in there fighting again next year. 39 TRACK TEAM R. Blais, R. Connell, M. Bulleit led his team to a wide margin victory, 19-54, over No. Providence. Scanlon and Oesrosiers were next to finish. Woonsocket suffered its first defeat, 21-34, against Mt. Pleasant. Dick Desros-iers was the first Villa Novan home. In the Burton trophy race, the squad finished a close second with 41 points to Cranston's 39. Betagh's boys downed Hope 20-37, sewing up the first five places. W. H. S. defeated Cranston in a dual meet, 23-32, with George Scanlon the first home for the winning team. Paced by Scanlon, the boys won a hard fought victory over Moses Brown—28-29. Congratulations, Ray Betagh! Woonsocket High is proud to be the home of the 1952 Class B champions. 41 HOCKEY TEAM R. St. Charles sextet, 1-0, in a round robin exhibition game. Tom Martin, assisted by Ray Triano, scored the one and only goal of the game. With the flame of victory still burning strongly, Woonsocket fell into the snares of the strong Burrillville, Hope and East Providence teams. The team fought harder and harder, losing to North Providence 3-2 in overtime and battling Cranston into a 3-3 deadlock. La Salle brought the weary pucksters down to an 8-1 defeat, and with an ardent desire for victory. Coach Lavallee's boys crashed through a tie in sudden death and downed Mount Pleasant 2-1. Bebeau and Gill did the scoring with assists by Wiard and Turcotte, while Chabot turned aside several M. P. threats to break the deadlock. The big game of the season against the Mount showed Woonsocket the aggressor in an attempt to duplicate their pre-season victory. But the tiring Villa Novans were soon set back to a spirited defense and lost 4-1 before a crowd of more than 2,500 roaring fans. Wiard scored Woonsocket's lone goal. In the last game of the season the squad rallied eight goals to Central's one, with tallies contributed by Bebeau, Triano, Darcy, Wiard, Gill, Mazzarella, and Rouselle. Woonsocket missed a seat in the playoff berth by one place. But with the skillful coaching of Wilt Lavallee aided by Derosiers, Darcy, Triano, and Gill, we hope to be up among the top six next season. 42 BASEBALL TEAM R. Tanguay, M. Rouselle, R. Lefebvre, R. E ASEdE AIoL 1951 Led by the inspired pitching of Pete Glode and Gildo Foresti and the great hitting of Jimmy Belknap, Woonsocket High waltzed away with the Northern Rhode Island Baseball Championship. Beaten only once, the Savariamen ended the season with a 13 WON, 1 LOST record. The Villa Novans rolled along undefeated for six straight games, beating Central Falls, Cumberland, Pawtucket Vocational, Sacred Heart, North Providence, and Mount St. Charles before being edged by Burri-ville, 5 to 4. After the first tilt with the Broncos, Woonsocket hit its stride again and won over Central Falls, Cumberland, Pawtucket Vocational (forfeit), Sacred Heart, North Providence, and Mount. This last Mount game clinched the title for the Villa Novans with only one game left—the second with Burriville. Woonsocket successfully ended the season by knocking off the Broncos, 8 to 4, atoning for their previous lone defeat. The semi-finals for the state championship presented the only sour note in an otherwise great season. Unable to cope with La Salle's prowess on the diamond, Woonsocket was defeated in two straight games, 14 to 1 and 8 to 0, the latter a nohitter. Pete Glode had a 9-1 mark for the season and Capt. Gildo Foresti ended with a clean slate of 3-0. While Pete and Gildo were keeping the opposing teams' score down, Jim Belknap was the big hitting gun for Woonsocket. Jim had a .418 batting average with one homer, three triples, three doubles, thirteen singles, and twenty runs batted in. A look at the roster for 1952 shows that only two of last year's team have graduated; and with a bench full of players to replace them, Woonsocket's chances for again winning the Northern Division title are excellent. 43 THE STARS T l | t yif •+ . ) ’ : « ' CW) ' ■ AV ,A.’ |T V , i3) ..
