JF n r r ut n r n Perhaps the age of chivalry is dead, but it has a lively ghost which haunts the pages of this year's QUIVER. Nobles, knights, fair maidens, squires and pages all roam the corridors in the guise of teachers, seniors, juniors and freshmen. The Round Table had its share of minstrels, bards, and performers, not unlike our class musicians, writers, and actors. As for the ancient jousts and tournaments, we offer our 1950 athletes— the mightiest of the mighty. King Arthur's knights searched for the Holy Grail. Iff n n t b a 11 The Woonsocket High School gridders opened their 1950-51 football season by dropping a 25-0 decision to a fast and able St. Raphael eleven in an exhibition encounter at Barry Field. Although on the short end of the score, because of lack of line experience, the Savariamen displayed plenty of fight and potentiality. In their first league encounter, Woonsocket met an underrated Pawtucket West club at Barry Field and were defeated 14-0 by the Rangers, who displayed a much improved brand of ball under the direction of their new coach. 36 The Villa Novans continued their quest for a victory, but lost to West Warwick and A'drich—the first by a 12-0 score and tie second, 27-6. It was in the Aldrich gsme that the locals gave their best performance. The Villa Novans were behind by one touchdown, 13-6, going into the third quarter—but at this point, Woonsocket tired end fell behind. In another exhibition game, the Sa-variamen traveled to City Stadium to take on Hope, a class A aggregation. Woonsocket dropped a heartbreaking 6-0 decision. The Villa Novans next met a powerful Groton eleven and were snowed under by their bigger rivals, 20-0. Under the able tutelage of Coach Gus Savaria and his assistant, John O'Day, the Villa Novans finally flashed the form expected of them in early season play. Meeting Central Falls at their own stadium. Coach Savaria's pupils finally broke into the win column, whipping the Blue Jackets by a 20-6 margin. It was mainly through the efforts of Moe Martin, a converted lineman, that the Villa Novans took the decision. It was his consistent line smashes that set up two touchdowns. Bill Somers, a freshman, also contributed to the Woonsocket cause, with a fine touchdown run on an intercepted pass. 37 Woonsocket continued their winning ways by knocking over a favored Classical eleven. The game was strictly a defensive affair; and Woonsocket's lone touchdown, which came in the second quarter, was set up through the efforts of La Roche, Walsh, and Somers with Martin scoring from the one yard line. An overflow crowd of 4,500 chilled but frenzied fans saw Woonsocket humble a fighting but out-classed Mount Saint Charles eleven by a 25-12 score. The Villa Novans' crushing ground attack, which netted them nineteen points in the first half, took the sting out of the confident Mounties. Spec- tacular runs by Don La Roche, which were made possible by the enormous holes opened by Woonsocket's improved line, set up the first two touchdowns. Walsh scored from the 16-yard line after La Roche's long jaunt. La Roche scored the second touchdown himself when he spotted a gigantic hole in the Mount line, and scampered all the way. Moe Martin scored the third touchdown after he intercepted a Mount pass and fought his way to the eleven. Two plays later he scored from the 3. No further scoring came in the first half although the Villa Novans were but 16 yards from pay dirt when the half ended, the score being 19-0. 38 Mount finally came to life mid-way through the third canto. After the Hill-toppers took a Woonsocket punt and moved to the 32, Baillargeon took a pass from La Pierre and sprinted all the way to the end zone without being touched. With the score 19-6, Woonsocket took to the air after Niedzwiadek intercepted a Mount pass. Lacroix tossed to Swiech and the plucky end didn't stop until he reached pay dirt, making the score 25-6. Baillargeon produced the final tally of the game when he took a Woonsocket punt on his own 30 and galloped 70 yards for a TD. The try for the extra point failed and that wound up further scoring, the final score being Woonsocket 25, Mount 12. The whole Villa Novan squad turned in a creditable performance and Capt. Bob Walsh was presented the City Championship Trophy by Chamber of Commerce officials. CAPT. BOB WALSH RECEIVES TROPHY 39 CROSS COUNTRY TEAM Top row—Mgr. R. Conti. Third row—R. Carlson, Crepeau, C. Rosenthal. It's hats off to Coach Ray Betagh for the skillful coaching of his fourth consecutive Class B Championship. This year his harriers won eight Class B dual meets, losing only to Hope and Mt. Pleasant, both Class A teams. Capt. Gildo Foresti guided the Villa Novans to a 17-40 victory over Westerly. He was closely followed by Rosenthal and Bulleit. Woonsocket easily defeated Hopedale by placing the first five men across the finish line before any Hopedale runners. Foresti, Rosenthal, and Laflamme finished in a dead heat for first place. Score 15-40. Capt. Foresti led the pack across the finish line to another victory. Three of his team mates, Rosenthal. Laflamme, and Bulleit were next to finish in that order. Score 16-45. Woonsocket defeated Pawtucket East, a Class A team, 24-31. The first Villa Novan across the line was Marty Rosenthal, who finished with a strong last half mile to beat East's first man, lonta. John Laflamme, Marty Rosenthal, and Capt. Foresti finished in a triple tie for first place to sew up the verdict against West. Score 15-58. Again the Foresti, Rosenthal, and Laflamme combination led their team to an easy triumph over U. S. Naval Prep. Bulleit finished fourth and Renaud, s xth. Against No. Providence Foresti and Rosenthal finished in a dead-heat for first, followed by Bulleit, Laflamme, and Renaud to give Woonsocket a sweep of the first five places. Score 15-45. Turning in their top performance of the year against St. Raphael, Marty Rosenthal and Capt. Foresti came in hand-in-hand, breaking the 2Va mile course record at Barry Field in the excellent time of 13 minutes 7 10 seconds. They led the team to its eighth straight victory in Class B competition this year. The Class B Championship race followed—Woonsocket won to make them undefeated in Class B for four years. Capt. Foresti was the first Woonsocketer to cross the finish line, followed by the bunched performance of Rosenthal, Renaud, Laflamme, and Bulleit. Scanlon and Lauzon finished 14th and 28th respectively. Woonsocket placed three men on the Class B All-State Team: Capt. Gildo Foresti, Marty Rosenthal and John Laflamme. 40 U, r a r k Although the 1950 track team had only one dual meeting, the skillful training of Coach Ray Betagh produced some fine runners. The individual star of the season was Jerry Rosenthal, who received All-Class-B honors in the 100 and 200 yard dashes. He was also chosen to represent the Villa Novans in the New England Championship Meet in the 200 yard dash. This year, the Woonsocket big guns' will be John laflamme, Marty Rosenthal, Dino Vetri, and Jim Bulleit. CONTENDERS IN EVENTS 100 yd. Dash D. Vetri, W. Somers, W. Keefe, G. Ondis, R. Comeau. 200 yd. Saakrtball Although no ball of fire in regular season play. Coach Frank Marrah's 1951 basketball squad copped two crowns of glory as it won both the city and area championships. In the first game of the city championship series the Villa Novans fought brilliantly to defeat a highly favored Mount St. Charles squad, 45-43, at the Armory. The game was a thriller all the way, as neither team ever enjoyed more than a six point lead. Marty Rosenthal and Jim O'Brien sparkled for the winners, each tallying 15 points. It was Co-Capt. Rosenthal's basket in the final minutes of play which provided the final decision, in favor of Woonsocket. The second game, played on Mount's home court, was equally thrilling as the Marrahmen repeated their first game's spirited performance and edged the Mounties 52-48. Guards Jim Belknap and Pete Glode turned in top-flight offensive performances as they scored 16 and 14 respectively, while O'Brien and Rosenthal were best defensively. 42 These two victories brought the Villa Novans the distinction of competing in the newly inaugurated area championship series. Their opponent in the two-game series was Bellingham High School, twice victorious over Blackstone High. The opening game was a weird affair, with Blackstone emerging victor, 40-27, on their home court. Thirty seconds had passed in the third quarter before the Bay Staters rippled the nets for their first basket. Never in serious trouble, the Villa Novans held period leads of 11-1, 19-3, and 28-14. O'Brien paced the victors with 15 points, while Belknap had 8. For the final game Woonsocket traveled to Bellingham to a vastly improved quintet. It was nip-and-tuck all the way, with the Marrahmen finally prevailing, 56-46. Pete Glode staged a one-man show as he led the Villa Novans' attack with 23 points, and Jim Belknap assisted with 14 markers. With these victories the 1951 Villa Novan cagers earned for Woonsocket the honor of being the first area basketball champions. Jumping from Class B into more powerful Class A, the Villa Novans played hard and spirited ball throughout the regular season. Their lack of experience however proved fatal against the larger schools, and they were able to win only one league game, a 58-44 victory over Pawtucket West, in addition to their two triumphs over Mt. St. Charles. Throughout the season Woonsocket lost several heartbreaking games, and Coach Marrah, Co-Captains Tom Shun-ney and Marty Rosenthal, and the entire squad deserve considerable credit for their spirited, if not victorious. Class A debut. In the All-State selections, Jim O'Brien copped a berth on the Class A third team, while Pete Glode, Marty Rosenthal, and Jim Belknap received honorable mention. 43 HOCKEY TEAM Back row—L. Henry, R. S. pucksters began their season in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League by facing the top four teams: Mt. St. Charles, Hope, Burriville, and LaSalle. They went down fighting all the way in the four contests. They displayed great courage and determination against Mount, our local rival, but just couldn't make the grade. Then, against Mt. Pleasant came the taste of victory. A close game all the way, Woonsocket finally scored the winning goal in a sudden death overtime period. Tom Martin, the big gun for the night, scored four goals. Again, the Villa Novans came through against Central. Woonsocket, the underdog, took a tight 2-1 decision from their Providence rivals. Tom Martin was still the hero with a goal and an assist to his credit. The game in which Woonsocket showed the greatest courage was that against East Providence. Although trailing by six points at the end of the second period, the W. H. S. boys came alive in the third stanza and split the Townies' lead in half to go to defeat, 7-4. With the last game, against Cranston, coming up, Woonsocket still had a chance to get into the championship playoffs. But the boys were a little too excited, and played their poorest game of the season, which resulted in a 3-0 victory for Cranston. This was a great disappointment to the entire student body at Woonsocket. However, two victories and a good showing in all games give us great hope of a better team next year, Woonsocket's third in league hockey competition. Best of luck to Coach Lavallee. The team will lose Savard, Lacroix, Darling and Foresti, but with Martin, Bebeau, Wiard, and Turcotte as a nucleus, the team should shape up well next season. 44 BASEBALL TEAM Top row—R. Tanguay, R. H a fi r h a I I Sparked by the brilliant pitching of Captain Jim Cassidy, Woonsocket High enjoyed one of its most successful baseball seasons during 1950. Defeated only by Burriville and Mount St. Charles, the Villa Novans captured second place in the Northern Division standings, finishing second only to Burriville. Cassidy and his southpaw slants were the talk of Rhode Island as the Villa Novan ace struck out 25 Cen tral Falls batters in a single contest to set a new schoolboy record. On his next outing, the talented senior hurled a no-hit, no-run game while whiffing 22 Cumberland hitters. And on other occasions throughout the season, Jimmy struck out 19 against No. Providence, 14 more as Woonsocket toppled Central Falls for the second time, 23 against Sacred Heart, and 21 against Mount St. Charles. After graduation, the strikeout ace signed a Boston Red Sox contract. The class of 51 and your many high school friends wish you, Jimmy, the best of luck and hope that some day you'll beat those Yankees for usl Cassidy, however, was not the only member of this Villa Novan team to attract major league scouts. Its able catcher, Pat Martin, was invited to attend a tryout camp in Cambridge, Maryland. The annual city series between Woonsocket and Mount St. Charles wound up in a tie, the Hilltoppers taking the first, 10-12, and the Villa Novans coming back in the second, 17-3. Woonsocket High was well represented on the All-State teams. Jim Cassidy was selected for the All-State first team, while chosen for All-Northern Division berths were Cassidy, and Ray Renaud, first team; Pat Martin and Pete Glode, second team; and Jimmy Belknap, third team. Receiving honorable mention were Leonard Lacroix, Gildo Foresti, and Art Fontaine. Our team used, for the first time, a scoreboard donated to Barry Field by the Andrew F. Young Post No. 2 Woonsocket High will open its 1951 baseball season at Northbridge on April 16th. Although handicapped by the loss of Cassidy, the team should enjoy a successful season under Captain Gildo Foresti and returning lettermen Jimmy Belknap, Len LaCroix and Pete Glode. 45 rates : wsm Si, . .
