Nl hx 1-2.45 1 HH :RIN 'N iHHXIIfI'N4k., H I WN breaks o'er America In streaks of red and gold, While the curtain of time rolls back To watch the new-born day unfold. The flag waves o'er our campus Reflecting the sun's bright hue, A symbol to true patriotic youth Of the land of the brave and true, Where knowledge is a constant quest To help us serve our country best. -lg everyone the flag belongs, Alike the rich and poor, And not one but is equal In the tasks that lie before. All know the standards of the flag- To serve with hearts and hands, To learn good-will toward neighbors, And friendship to these lands. For though in miles We're far apart, We're equal all in mind and heart. IEJEN While Hate and Strife surround us, True loyalty never dies, So we greet the proud flags flying Under South American skies. 1 ' ' . - - .5.n, - r .. ,. .If A. L nn I -'S A l I o 1.- x . K. SIEIPTVIEMIIBIEIR II II, IIQAIII Q -HQHE clock was striking eight as I timidly entered the doors of Woonsocket High School. A few early pupils were straggling along the corridor waiting for the eight- fifteen bell. I felt my heart sink as my eyes met their curious stares, but I soon regained my courage as their lips curved upward in welcoming grins. As I waited for Mr. Donlon, I watched the first few grow into a large group, congreaated mainly under Minnie, the statue facing the main entrance. As soon my natural curiosity over- came me, I wandered out into the cor- ridor to get acquainted with my com- panions for the coming year. The bulletin hoard seemed a popu- lar place so I wedged my way in to see what the main attraction was. I guess I pushed a little too hard for a tall boy turned around and snapped, Where do you think you're going, Budlu Then, suddenly, when he recognized me as the new exchange student, his voice changed and he offered to show me around the school. As my new found friend and I walked around the building, we heard cries of oh, look who I've got! in varyA ing tones. I wondered what these North American teachers were like. When the eight-fifteen hell sounded, I left my new amigo with a date to have lunch with him. Then I walked into Mr. Donlon's office to he officially welcomed and assigned to a room. I note the dreaded whispers and inguirie: such as, l'Is there going to be a test? llI.et's see your answer ' Yes, indeed, these Americans have very unusual customs. As the teacher steps into the room a general silence sudden- ly prevails. The teacher seems pleased with this and looks over the class to find out who hasnt done his homework. Everyone trusts to luck that he wont be called on. When, however, the teacher decides to correct the homework, a sigh of re- lief arises from the studious group, After corrections have been made, questions are asked about all mistakes. Then, I'm really confused! Gosh' Algebra isnt so easy as it looks. Even with the help of Miss McFee and Mr. Guyette, students find more than one difficulty in this important subject which is vital to our national defense program. Mr. X. is a very elusive person but welll get him yet. We hope! WE GET THE POINT Mr. George Guyette IS THAT CLEAR? Miss Elizabeth O'DonneII lust sitting behind the geometry class reminds me of one night back home, when I fell asleep over my home- work and dreamed that I was being chased by angles and circumferences, Ever since then, I've felt a great respect for this study. Of course, to the outsider, conf gruent triangles may not mean anyf thing, but the pupils initiated into these mysteries have to be up on their toes every minute of the period. I must ad- mit I often neglect my own studying as I become absorbed in the way Miss O'I7onnell explains theorems and prob- lems. Probably theres not another high- school coiirse so calculated to teach the student to think and actually to solve thing every one is interested in today. So I like to remember that when I walk into Room I8 and see the boards decof rated with figures that seem meaning- less to those who have never explored the t1elds of geometry. Was it Euclid or Pythafioras would that I could remember '.-:lie it '-'ICISI It really doesnt make much difference not-J '.-:ho evolved 'itrigu as long as have the subject and Mr. Guyette to teach it. We have ac- companied him to the gym and with him attended assembly programs. At the informal dances proms and the play We have welcomed him into our social life As an enthusiastic spectator, he has witnessed with us struggles on the grid- iron, contests on the court, the opening tussle on the diamond, and a successful meet on the cinders.
