SENIORS AT BAT i he year was 1953; the place, Woolwine High School. There was a clear shout from an unseen umpire, Batter up! We, fifty-four eighth graders, being very i n e x p e r i e n c e d at this game of high school, found ourselves scared stiff as we took our individual places at the home plate. Most of us realized that we faced many challenges as we looked into the future years of our education. We realized that unlike most baseball games, this was not a matter of homers , but a gradual run from base to base. The year of 1954 found most of us at first base with abase hit to our credit, and the problem of getting to second became a reality. We knew we could make it because that first big step had given us self-confidence. This year found us with a forty-seven member team, several of our original num- ber having made outs. Our coach was Mr. Herbert Pilson. Then there was the sound of a pitch, and we made a run for it; so early September, 1955, found us safe on second. Our run was half completed, and we felt even stronger the need to go on until we reached home. The coach for our decreasing number of thirty- three was Mrs. Nancy Pilson. Our team during this year of 1955 had very efficient leaders, and we put forth every possible effort with LaVerne Foley as President; Margie Moran, Vice-President; Barbara Hatcher, Secretary-Treasurer; and Patsy Brammer, Reporter. Just as we rounded the turn to dive for third, there was a shout from the umpire, You're out! That could only mean that we had lost fourteen of our team. As we gathered our wits and brushed ourselves after the slide for this last stopping point, we finally realized that there were only thirty-three left to win the battle. But how could we lose? Home plate with all its rewards was so near! We lingered on third for a little fun and frolic--the highlights of our stay being the Junior Play, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. We found our team under the able leadership of Falus Hatcher, President; Carol Atkins, Vice-President; Margie Moran, Secretary; P a t s y Brammer, Treasurer; Joyce C o n n e r , Reporter. Coaching us at third this year was Miss Beulah Thomas. September, 1957, downed with the crash of a ball in center field. We didn't stop to check on the fielder's ability, but could only hope this was our chance to make that last break. Those last few feet from home plate found many of us crawling, digging, and stumbling in order to reach safety. We had to make it — —t here was a diploma waiting that would sign us up with the great big Professional League of American Citizens. Urged on by shouts of encouragement such as, We want a run! from our coach, Miss Beulah Thomas, twenty -two of us reached home plate for which we had struggled for four years. Among the early arrivals were our President, Patsy Brammer; Vice- President, LaVerne Foley; Secretary, Margie Moran; Treasurer, Joyce Conner; Reporter, Harlowe Bowling. The first treat for our having gotten home was the Junior--Se ni o r Banquet. This was followed by the Senior Play and, of course, the main event--our graduation. Yes, we have made our run at Wool- wine High. Sometimes our batting averages have been excellent, and at other times, be- low normal. That unseen umpire could possibly have made many more outs , but we knew what the score had to be for us to win. Those Professionals from the League of American Citizens have watched us constantly, and now we're signed up for the future with a life-time contract of success or failure!
