TWIN OAKS NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT PUBLISHED BY THE SENIORS OF WOOLWINE HIGH SCHOOL Woolwine, Virginia Margie Moran EDITOR LaVerne Foley ASSISTANT EDITOR Vada Boyd BUSINESS MANAGER Mrs. Beatrice Wood SPONSOR To one who has helped to make Woolwine High School outstanding by having been a part of it; To one who, with her ever-ready kindness, courtesy, and sincerity, has established a friendship we shall always cherish; To one who, while marching with us through our daily routine, was extremely interested in academic as well as extra-curricular activities; To one who, regardless of the task, never failed to face it bravely and carry it through; To the memory of Nancy Carol Atkins, who would have been a member of our Senior Class this year, WE DEDICATE THIS, OUR 1958 TWIN OAKS 4 There is a remembrance of the dead to which we turn--even from the charms of the living. These remembrances we would not exchange for the song of pleasure or the bursts of revelry. As dew to the blossoms--and bud to the bee, as scent to the rose, --such are the mem- ories of Billy Atkins who would have been a member of the Eighth Grade. He has--though the seven years of our school life--been such a vital part of us that this memory is eternal. Remembrance is the lasting perfume of a beautiful flower that has faded. 5 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE We should look upon our school as a stepping stone toward greater accomplishments. Remember this school as one step up the ladder of success. Give yourself every opportunity to do your best in what- ever you might choose. Let this annual serve as a reminder that hard work goes into everything that is good. MR. ALGIE SPENCER Virginia Polytechnic Institute Vocational Agriculture MR. There was a clear shout from an unseen umpire, Batter up! We, fifty-four eighth graders, being very i n e x p e r i e n c e d at this game of high school, found ourselves scared stiff as we took our individual places at the home plate. Most of us realized that we faced many challenges as we looked into the future years of our education. We realized that unlike most baseball games, this was not a matter of homers , but a gradual run from base to base. The year of 1954 found most of us at first base with abase hit to our credit, and the problem of getting to second became a reality. We knew we could make it because that first big step had given us self-confidence. This year found us with a forty-seven member team, several of our original num- ber having made outs. Our coach was Mr. Herbert Pilson. Then there was the sound of a pitch, and we made a run for it; so early September, 1955, found us safe on second. Our run was half completed, and we felt even stronger the need to go on until we reached home. The coach for our decreasing number of thirty- three was Mrs. Nancy Pilson. Our team during this year of 1955 had very efficient leaders, and we put forth every possible effort with LaVerne Foley as President; Margie Moran, Vice-President; Barbara Hatcher, Secretary-Treasurer; and Patsy Brammer, Reporter. Just as we rounded the turn to dive for third, there was a shout from the umpire, You're out! That could only mean that we had lost fourteen of our team. As we gathered our wits and brushed ourselves after the slide for this last stopping point, we finally realized that there were only thirty-three left to win the battle. But how could we lose? Home plate with all its rewards was so near! We lingered on third for a little fun and frolic--the highlights of our stay being the Junior Play, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. We found our team under the able leadership of Falus Hatcher, President; Carol Atkins, Vice-President; Margie Moran, Secretary; P a t s y Brammer, Treasurer; Joyce C o n n e r , Reporter. Coaching us at third this year was Miss Beulah Thomas. September, 1957, downed with the crash of a ball in center field. We didn't stop to check on the fielder's ability, but could only hope this was our chance to make that last break. Those last few feet from home plate found many of us crawling, digging, and stumbling in order to reach safety. We had to make it — —t here was a diploma waiting that would sign us up with the great big Professional League of American Citizens. Urged on by shouts of encouragement such as, We want a run! from our coach, Miss Beulah Thomas, twenty -two of us reached home plate for which we had struggled for four years. Among the early arrivals were our President, Patsy Brammer; Vice- President, LaVerne Foley; Secretary, Margie Moran; Treasurer, Joyce Conner; Reporter, Harlowe Bowling. The first treat for our having gotten home was the Junior--Se ni o r Banquet. This was followed by the Senior Play and, of course, the main event--our graduation. Yes, we have made our run at Wool- wine High. Sometimes our batting averages have been excellent, and at other times, be- low normal. That unseen umpire could possibly have made many more outs , but we knew what the score had to be for us to win. Those Professionals from the League of American Citizens have watched us constantly, and now we're signed up for the future with a life-time contract of success or failure! The choice is ours! 10 Vada Boyd Carol Ann Griffith FREEDA BELCHER Cookie A friendly a i r , a pleasant smile; sincere and winsome all the while. Let's journey to Woolwine and see if the former graduates are successful. As we travel toward the metropolis of Woolwine, we see an immense Chinchilla farm. We are told that the farm is owned by Rita Hall and her husband. When we enter the city, we are im- pressed with the new business establish- ments and educational center. We visit first the Blue Ridge Mountain College which has an enrollment of 997 students. We are welcomed by Margie Moran, the first President. We see Betty Lou Haynes getting her M. R. S. Degree. We go across the street and see the office of the bi-daily newspaper Read It Now. The editor is Orea Foley. The headlines read Trophies of the World's G r e at e s t A t h 1 e t e , Dovie Ann Hylton Are on Display at Valentine Museum. On the fashion page we read that Lillie Mae Foley has won fame for her eye-catching fashions. We thumb to the sports page and find that Reno High School is winning quite a few basketball games with Patsy Brammer as the girls' coach and Lloyd Barker as the boys'coach. We continue on our journey and see Blanco Midkiff, present manager of the Insane Asylum at Stanton. His salary is excellent but his mind is a wreck. Near-by we see the W right Beauty Salon, which is owned by Eva Wright. Here we see many of our friends and learn some of the latest news. We are told that Carol Ann Griffith is on a foreign tour with her army husband, Roy Turner. LaVerne Foley, Now Mrs. Curtis Hatcher, is on her honeymoon in Hawaii. U. S. Scientist, David Conner, has just returned from a trip to the moon on a Sputnik. He advertises moon soil for $1000 a thimble full. Pleased with the news we have heard, we leave the beauty salon and walk down Main Street. Guess whom we meet! None other than Mrs. Kenneth Rakes, the former Joyce C o n n e r , who has given up her job as stewardess for Pan American Airways for marriage. She informs us that Vada Boyd is Elvis Presley's confidential secretary. We get in our car and drive out to the suburbs to the Kill or Cure hospital, with Hollis Rorrer as head nurse. She sees that one or the other happens. We start to a drive-in theatre, but are delayed by State Trooper Harlowe Bowling, who gives us a ticket Jor flying too close to the ground. At the police- station we meet Freeda Belcher, the first policewoman of Woolwine. She re- cognizes our identity and lets us go free. Finally we arrive at the W. H. S. - TV Station, which is owned by Crystal Foley and R. J. Scott. We hear Lorene Rakes singing her favorite song Jam-Up and Honey. Knowing that we must leave Woolwine soon and return to our missionary work in Guatemala, we visit Gerald Wright, Mayor, and tell him that we have been greatly i m p r e s s e d with the numerous improvements which have been made in Woolwine. We also talk about the energetic youth who graduated from Woolwine High School in 1958 and decide that these in- dividuals have gained, at last, the happi- ness and prosperity w h i c h they worked so diligently to achieve.
