Early in January, three of the District 15 School Board Members proposed that Wtmodway High School be closed next year as a result of declining enrollment. Woodway students, parents and faculty united on January 28, for a public hearing on the issue of school closures. The meeting, held at Mountlake Terrace Junior High, was covered by Steve Pool from KOMO news, and reporters from major newspapers. A rally of students took place in the Terrace Junior High parking lot before the meeting at 6:45. Our famous Woodway High School Band played the fight song and many other favorites. The cheer- leaders were also there to get the crowd going and really show our spirit. When the doors opened, orange T-shirts reading W.H.S. S.O.S., save our school and The 4 year plan, try it, it worksl' dominated thc Terrace Junior High gym. The rumors that Wood- way had no spirit were shot down by over 1,000 supporters, as cheers rang out proclaiming We have spirit! As a result of this meeting, the School Board Members changed their original pro- posal from closing a high school to keeping the high schools open and closing two junior highs. ,Q 5 'I' Q Q Q QODLJ Q Q , . 0 . This time the crowd was eomposed of the parents who wanted to keep Terrace Junior High open. The ar- guments for keeping Terrace open were that too many of the schools on the east side of Aurora Avenue have already been closed. and also that the new boundaries would foree some students to change schools again. The School Board Members did point ont. however, that there have been almost the same number of sehools closed on the west side of the highway. The Board Members then voted to wait to name the schools to be closed and start the four year plan or an alternate plan in September. 1981. And so our school lives for at least another year! 161
