The Who sold out both shows in less than one day, reserved seating only due to the mishap in Cincinatti, Ohio. The rock group, Froeigner blitzed the coli- the Rings , Star Trek , North Dallas Fortyw, Apocalypse Now , 1941 , The Muppet Movieii, American Gigolow, Roller Boogie , Oh, Codii, The Life of Brian . Many fads cluttered the school year. The styles for the female population were straight leg jeans, painter pants and sasson jeans with the baggy look which could be accompanied by a bright and colorful Ha- waiian top. The girls and the guys wore cow- boy hats, overalls, boots and velour tops to get into the fashion scene. The girls experi- mented with their hair either wearing a bun on one side or French braiding. The sayings encountered and rememberd were that something that happened was fine and something good looking was beautous. An upsetting attitude towards some occurrence caused a comment to come out such as wretch mel Something highly impressive was referred as darn cool,', or hu- mungousw amount was massive Totally and for surei' meant there was no doubt about it. The scoop was the top secret gos- sip that everyone just couldn't miss. The phrases I guessi' or you know began ev- ery sentence. People did not say things, in reference to a converation, it was 1 go . . . McDonald's became a popular and well known fad for the Woodway students to use as a hangout after games, and for a place to turn to on a Friday and Saturday night since the Edmonds Union Oil Beach was- closed for remodeling due to rowdy kids, excessive drinking and smoking. During the summer of 1979, General Foods gained a 352.5 mil- lion dollar profit on the fastest moving 116W candy ever seen, better known as thc energetic Pop Rocks. They came in packets of cherry, grape and orange. A hotline was even established to call and receive a re- corded message about the new candy. The disco craze hit many, as the discos were the places to go on a weekend night. Disco mn- sic hit the radio stations and even roller rinks. Donna Summers was better known as the Disco Queen. To this famous music the skateboard influenced those as a way of transportation or enjoyment. Talks of the closure of Wtrodway Senior High School were a major issue. The unity of the student body proved to be a chal- lenge for the School Board of Directors who had wished to convert Woodway into a Con- tinuation High School, and transfer Wood- way students to other schools throughout the district due to Woodway's declining en- rollment. Another possibility was to change Woodway to a four year high school and this the students fought for with petitions. and Save Our School tee shirts. At the School Board hearing on the closure, 1,500 angry students, teachers, and parents crowded the Mountlake Terrace Junior High School gym to speak their minds to the School Board. Later. ,lack Cooper, a School Board Member, informed the pa- trons of Woodway High School that by a single vote, the four year high school was fa- vored, and our high school would remain open for at least another school year. Early in January, three of the District 15 School Board Members proposed that Wtmodway High School be closed next year as a result of declining enrollment. Woodway students, parents and faculty united on January 28, for a public hearing on the issue of school closures. The meeting, held at Mountlake Terrace Junior High, was covered by Steve Pool from KOMO news, and reporters from major newspapers. A rally of students took place in the Terrace Junior High parking lot before the meeting at 6:45. Our famous Woodway High School Band played the fight song and many other favorites. The cheer- leaders were also there to get the crowd going and really show our spirit. When the doors opened, orange T-shirts reading W.H.S. S.O.S., save our school and The 4 year plan, try it, it worksl' dominated thc Terrace Junior High gym. The rumors that Wood- way had no spirit were shot down by over 1,000 supporters, as cheers rang out proclaiming We have spirit! As a result of this meeting, the School Board Members changed their original pro- posal from closing a high school to keeping the high schools open and closing two junior highs. ,Q 5 'I' Q Q Q QODLJ Q Q , . 0 . I Q I . l ' EVER ' C. ,' u,g' On February 11, another very emotional meeting took plaee at Meadowdale High School. This time the crowd was eomposed of the parents who wanted to keep Terrace Junior High open. The ar- guments for keeping Terrace open were that too many of the schools on the east side of Aurora Avenue have already been closed. and also that the new boundaries would foree some students to change schools again. The School Board Members did point ont. however, that there have been almost the same number of sehools closed on the west side of the highway. The Board Members then voted to wait to name the schools to be closed and start the four year plan or an alternate plan in September. 1981. And so our school lives for at least another year! 161
