M In Byron Give us one last chance to say hello. to hear your voice to see your eyes sparkle with delight, and to hear your laugh. so full of joy, Give us one last chance and to see your smiling face. Give us one last chance to call your name. to grasp your memory in our hearts. , . to say we ll miss you, and to say goodbye. Sharon .Iarvis My Beloved Brother Byron was a super brother, That I loved very much, That's what brought us closer Every day and every month. We used to always fight and yell, And scream in each other's ears, Then we would always turn around, To show that we really cared. Whenever I needed anything, He was always there to give, Thatls why I always thought That Byron deserved to live. I always wanted to pay Byron For everything he did Then one night there was an accident, And he died at the age of fifteen. No one knew why God took him this way. But we all know that sometime or another. God will take His loved ones away. I remember that night so clearly, When we were all laughing and having fun. .lust like Byron was when he was always around somm om Itls too bad it had to happen For Byron was so young, He had a happy life going for him. That had really just begun. Although I have wonderful memories of him. And I think about him each day, Oh, what a wonderful brother he was That made me love him every day. I thank God for letting me have Such a wonderful brother like him. I will always care deeply for him And think of how lucky I have been. Cathy Reynolds 157

As he left us I thought- This is so wrong, so unfair, he had so much to give-Why was he taken from us? But my anger and frustration was wrong, and selfish. For in reality he gave a vision of the greatest gift of all- Pure and Precious Life 1 F Byron's wide smile and happy heart gave us joy and a special feeling of love. G . . . with interest 1979 and 1980 were eventful years. Na- tional, local and school life progressed as the year continued. There were beneficial and burdensome times. We strived for as- sortments of goals and on the way learned from our mistakes. From cherished memo- ries to important lessons to remember. we encountered them all. All the events af- fected our lives. In the world of politics, detente was the name of the game. The constant advice and approval of President Carter supported the American people in our foreign affairs. A visit from Poland's Pope, John Paul II to Boston. New York City, Chicago, Phila- delphia. Washington D.C. and Des Moines transpired, being the first Pope to do so. President Jose Lopes Portillo of Mexico bartered with us in our necessity for natural gas and oil. Long waits in gas lines and fast climbing prices continued. To add to the confusion. the United States cut off oil trade with Iran because of a diminishing amount of tmst. Meanwhile, in Iran. there were Anti-Shah riots until the Shall of Iran fled from the country. He came to New York for cancer treatment and in return the Iranians got a new Imman, The Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The Iranians held the American Embassy employees and diplo- mats captive in belief that the Shahis main concern was to escape and seek asylum out- side Iran. The Shah was taken i11 and treated in New York, Texas and then Pan- ama. In late January of 1980, Prime Minis- ter, Joe Clark of Canada. with faulty pass- ports, succeed in freeing six American diplomats being held hostage. Iran's next door neighbor, Afghanistan, was invaded by the Soviet Union as their 10.000 Soviet ll'O0pS were massed on the border. Tragi- cally. Lord Mountebattan. the famous Brit- 158 ish general, was assassinated as his boat was blown up by the Irish Republic and Army. Also, Indira Gandhi was re-elected as the head of the Indian Parliament after a land- slide election despite her 34- months of ab- sence and a jail term. In the world of sports, action and activity abounded. The 11ew United States Tennis Open winners were John McEnroe and 14 year old Tracy Austing Tracy also won the Seattle Avon Tennis Championship. The no- torious basketball champs were the Seattle Super sonics who fought the Washington D.C. Bullets for the world championship title. A song was named after the Sonicis team and the Sonic fever spread, plus many expressed great acclaim to Lenny Wilkens, the Sonic coach. The University of Wash- ington's football team, The Huskies. were invited to the Sun Bowl on New Year's Day and defeated Texas University. although Joe Steeleis football career was indefinitely ter- minated by a knee injury before the big game. The famous Pittsburgh Steeler's de- feated the Los Angeles Rams at Super Bowl XIV, 31-19. The University of Southern California also won the Rose Bowl. Wood- way's own Robert Shannon. a junior. won a gold medal in a pre-olympic international boxing tournament in Tokyo. The Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York took place during a 13 day time span. East Ger- many came in first place with nine gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals. The Soviet Union placed second with I0 gold, six silver and six bronze, and in third place with a proud six gold medals, four silver and two bronze was the United States. Eric Heiden. wo11 five gold medals alone in speed skating. becoming the first person to win that number in the Winter Olympics. The big event of the Winter Olympics was the United States Hockey Team's 4--3 victory over a strong and experienced Russian ice team. The young U.S. team went on to a championship game against Finland and won the gold medal after a grueling game. Locally. the annual Seafair Parade included the Seafair Trophy Race for hydroplanes on Lake Washington. At the race. the Budwei- ser hydroplane, moving at a rate of 200 miles an hour, overturned, injuring Dean Chenoweth. but he survived the crash. The year had other surprising incidents. The importance of the woman's role in so- ciety weighed more heavily: The critized Su- san B. Anthony dollar was established and few were put into circulationg it was the first one dollar piece to be named after a woman. The value of the American dollar continued to fall on the world money exchanges. The question as to whether we should draft women in case of a world war entered the minds of many. Margaret Thatcher became the first lady Prime Minister in England. E.R.A. was just short three votes to become an effective amendment, although many du- rable women became miners, priests, jock- eys, West Point cadets, ship captains and as- tronauts. Other miscellaneous events. the beloved and admired John Wayne died of a heart at- tackg Jimmy Durante died at age 86g Phoe- nix, Arizona was flooded after the Salt River went wildg Governor Dixie Lee Ray closed the dumpsites due to a haphazard Three Mile Island nuclear waste dumping at Hanfordg the Chrysler Corporation almost
