An ever widening curric- ulum and a teaching staff which is committed to quality education blend to provide intel- lectual s t im ul at io n for all. Pride in our school takes on anew dimension as Woodway completes its fir S t year in interscholastic activities. The absense of upper classmen these past two years has forced leadership on to some who may not otherwise have be- come school le a d e r s, and their response has been most heartening. Each new event has in i t i a t e d a new tradition, a challenge which Woodway High School s t u d e n t s ac - cepted willingly but did not take lightly. The student enthusiasm, friendliness, and seri- ousness of purpose portend a brilliant future for Woodway High School. V. lm' Although new to Woodway this year, Mr. Stoffer accepted the duties of Vice- Priricipal with courage and enthusiasm. Whether patrolling the cafeteria sche du J ing conferences, or advising student council, his is a job well done. 8 l Mr. Davis' right hand, Mrs. Myron, is kept constantly busy with bulletins , announce- ments, and phone calls. Despite the hectic schedule she maintains her exuberance and enthusiasm for all of Woodway's activities. Mrs. Schaeffer, counseling secretary, as- sists the guidance depmtment with its paper work. Running the mimeographing machine is one of the many duties of Mrs. Crary, Woodway's faculty secretary. Secretarial S Zajf Keeping the records straight is Mrs. Phillips, attendance secretary. Those who don't know her by name, would recognize her signature on any number of little white slips. Guidance Ivlr. McClenahan and Mrs. Svendsen, WHS junior and sophomore counselors, are always ready and willing to assist students. 9 Early Preparations In order to prepare the school for student oc- cupancy, principals, secretaries, counselors and other Work crews met daily at Woodway one month before classes began in September. Be c au s e Woodway High School had only two classes, s opho mo r e s and juniors, with no seniors, it was also temporary headquarters for Brier junior High School and for Edmonds Community College. It was oft en necessary for personnel from each of the three units to Wait their turn to use classrooms. Mose, as he is affectionately called, answered calls for help promptly. 1 Our principal, Mr. Davis, had the added handicap of moving with a cast on his leg, the result of a summer accident. Mrs. Fuhrman, librarian at Woodway High, came early to sort hundreds of cards for new books to be placed on the new shelves in the new library. Mr. Barich, principal of Brier junior High, and his secretary, shared the equipment in the main office with the Woodway staff. I -uf' 1 Swv Dr. Opgaard Worked at his duties as President of the College in his tiny office located in the Commons area. Dietitians, cooks, waitresses and custodians prepared meals and kept the cafeteria ready to serve students. A.S.B..' ayear This year, A.S.B. was faced with many seem- ingly infinite jobs. Several problems and pro- jects which were c arr ied over from last year kept the council busy for most of the year. There wer e new projects to be initiated also. Among the major dec is io ns made this year were the school theme, motto, mascot, and coat of arms. An Irish theme was decided upon by the majority vote of the s t ude nt body. Once the theme was decided upon an Irish c om m itte was estab- lished to bring further ideas for names before the student body. By the end of the year, Fianna Fail QWar r io r s of Destinyj was our mottog a c oat of arms was d raw ng the idenity of the Woodway Warrior was revealedg and we became the first school in our district to nameour buildings. A fall candy sale, several donut sales, dances and a spring carnival, Donnybrook Fair , were major fund raisers. Monies sustained from these activities help ed to pay off the debts that are encountered when starting a new school. Carol Besaw and jeff Coffelt represented Wood- way at Inter-High this year. They attended me etings at Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace, Meadowdale, Sehome, Bellingham, Everett, and Cascade High School. President, Dan Lampard, summed up the achievements of the Associated Student Body for '68-'69. Having an agenda that s ee med endless was the pro- blem of the Associated Student Body this year. There was a decision to be made on a theme, mascot, and emblem. Then there was our money issue and the pro- blem of setting up the various activities, rules, names, and traditions. And. believe me, allthese things repre- sented one big headache for everyone. But, more im- portant than these heada ch e s, there was the joy and happiness that comes from knowing you worked together toward accomplishment. fTop Rightj Representatives at an informal meeting. fLoWer Rightj The music of The Beard is enjoyed by dancers at the first A. The first major performance of the concert band was at the Winter Concert where they made their first appearance in their new concert uniforms. Selections for their first musicale ranged from the lively march, Men of Ohio , to Haydn Wood's Manx Tone Poem, Mannin Veen . The Warrior concert bandjoined the other high school bands in District 515 for a pops concert on March 2, 1969. The combined bands played four tunes, each chosen by a conductor. Mr. Caldwell chose an ar- rangement of I've Got Rhythm which feattmed the percussion. Preparing for the Spring Concert and the high school band contest occupied the rest of their practice time. Stage band, an extracurricular ensemble, added that extra beat to the music department. Their practices one or two times a week prepared them for their per- formances at the Winter and Spring Concerts, PTSA meetings and many other programs. Debate speaks out Woodway's debate team has shown remarkable effort and success as they participated in their first year of competition. Their advisor, Mr. Greeves, is very optimistic about the future of his club. They placed high in district competition and in meets held at Western Wash- ington State College, the Uni- versity of Puget Sound, and in Snohomish. Because of the age factor, de- bate members had to compete in the junior division. Hope- fully, by next year, the debate team will be able to partici- pate in the senior division--- thus e arning the recognition they deserve. Awarding the cheerleaders with megaphones, chop- ping Wood to earn money, sponsoring a Saint-Vincent -Dance, and ushering at games provided a full agenda. Walwowers blossom J bf S tag The girls at WHS felt that since the boys had organized the Wallflowers for BOYS ONLY, they needed a club for GIRLS ONLY, so they organized a group for girls, called Stag. The purpose of the club is to promote spirit among female students and to act as a courtesy organization. To become a member, a girl n eeds an ASB card and an int er e st in WHS. Activities sponsored by this gro up were a skating party with the Wall- flowers and Pep Club as guests, Christmas carolling with Mr. Greeves, ushering at plays, and helping at concession stands at games. 41 P' CK J!
