paying attention to the scrimmage like they should be. When you have an atmosphere like that, it's almost impossible to get mentally pre- pared for a scrimmage or game. Still and all, the first team looked pretty good on offense. Shuttlesworth ran well, and in the last play of the game, Sam Mays broke around left end for a touchdown. Coming home, everybody was joking around; the scrimmage didn't mean anything We were coming home on the Cross County highway and when we were practically home, Campbell looked up, and he saw the new Rockdale Tem- ple, and he said that the thing looked like a big birdhouse. So I told Mr. Campbell that my father would be glad to hear that because he's on the board of trustees of the Temple. The score of the scrimmage was Loveland 12, Woodward 6. AUGUST30 m e . I mag. We beat Purcell in a scrimmage today, 6-0. Coach Sharp said I had a few good blocks today. The coaches never say that much to me. I guess Illl have to start worrying when they start yelling at me too much instead of not saying anything. During the week, the coaches have already started to talk about Hamilton Garfieldt Camp- bell mentioned how he knocked Boxcar Bailey out of the game up there one year. The whole team seems to think that this is kind of a myth, that there really isn't a Boxcar Bailey. 1 was talking to my dad a couple nights ago about this, and I found out that there really was Boxcar Bailey and that he was quite a back at Miami University. I was really surprised because I thought it was just a funny little story that Campbell made up for every Garfield game. But there's really a Boxcar Bailey. SEPTEMBER 6 Our14-12 loss to Garfield was a gift. There weren't that many penalties, but we did have an awful lot of fumbles. Being a lineman, I couldn't really pinpoint the trouble. Anyway, we found that we have the halfbacks that can run with Ed- die. That will take a lot of pressure off him. The linebackers won't be able to key entirely on the fullback now; they'll have to watch the halfbacks too. If we can eliminate the mistakes though, the fumbles, missed assignments, and a few things that we did wrong on defense, I think we'll have

drives his car around onto the field. Well, we're running sprints, and Doc's watchingi And these guys started walking around the field instead of iogging. With most leg injuries, you usually run it out 50 Doc took off in his car, following these guys around the field, making sure they ran. Just looking at it reminded me of one of those big Tiuie teams with the wagon behind it. IKUC-UST 23 I had to get up really early, about a quarter of seven, because I had to be over at school by seven-thirty for the scrimmage with LaSaIie. I couldn't eat anything I drank my orange juice, and then I got all my clothes out of the dryer and got ready to go to football. I got there about seven-thirty, and I felt a little more nerv- ous and anxious. I put on all my stuff and was ready to go. We were on defense first so I lined up oppos- ite the tackle. I was surprised because with these Catholic schools you expect some big monster to be playing opposite you. But this guy wasn't any bigger than me; he must have outweighed me by about ten pounds, When comparing a Catholic school to a public school, you think they realiy hit harder. But LaSalIe didn't hit hard at aiit They just came out like they had marshmallows in their shoulder pads. I didn't have a rough time on defense, except their backs hit pretty hard and it was hard to bring them down. I could have had a lot more tackles than I didj but I didn't follow through on the tacklesi I hit the guy and knocked him off balance but I couldn't bring him down. The offensive tackle didn't provide much opposition. In one play that Bill Stith and I made, and this is what the lineman wants to do, Stith was blitzing from the left side and he came straight in at the quarterback and I was coming in from the side and exactly, right when he was throwing the ball, Stith and I hit him at the same time. Bill hit him in the legs and Istuck my helmet in his ribs, and we made him scream. That's just what a lineman likes to hear. You want to know that you're really hitting the quarterback, making him feel it. It seemed like the referees were kind of hometown because there were about ten sec- onds left in the game and LaSalle had no time outs left, and they Wouldn't have enough time to run another plays 50 for no reason the offie cial calls an official time-out, stopping the clock and giving LaSalle the chance to run one more play, And they eventually scored on the play and won the game, three touchdowns to two AUGUST 26 Tony Pack quit the team today, partly be- cause he wasn't playing the position he wanted to and partly because he had a job in the book- room at school. Campbell was pretty upset about this. When we got down on the practice field, before we started calisthenics, Campbell told us about Pack. Campbell said that you'd have to be a fool to come this far and quit, to come through a week of summer practice, which is harder than any other practice, and then quit. He said that doing this from now on would be called a Pack, because Tony was the only one who had done it so far, He said from now on if anybody'd quit, held go out and buy a little doll and some pins and stick your name on it, and if you'd quit, every day he'd stick a pin in your doiii I guess he thinks he's a voodoo doctor along with a football coach and slave-driver. AUGUST 27 We went out to the scrimmage with Loveland and most of us thought it'd just be a joke, Coach Gray said that they probabiy just took the cows off the field and were cutting the grass. a pretty good ball club We out-played Hamilton Garfield, except that there were just those mistakes. After the game, we were coming home on the bus. Coach Campbell said there's only one thing worse than the other team beating you and that's when you beat yourselves. And that kind of summed up the whole game. We beat ourselves with our mistakes, We out-played them, but we beat ourselves. SEPTEMBER13 Last Monday in practice we were running punt coverage. One time, I got down there pretty fast, and the ball went through the punt receiver's arms and bounced up right to me. If it had been a game, I probably would have gone for a touch down. So after practice I was thinking that I should have saved something like that for a game because it would probably be the only time I'd ever score a touchdown. So in the game last night, which we lost 12-6, Elder was on about their own thirty yard line and they ran a pitch-out to the opposite side, So I was supposed to trail the play and the halfback fumbled the pitch-out and I picked it up and ran for a touchdown. When I scored that touchdown, it was the line- man's dream, because he rarely has the oppor- tunity. Somebody remarked to me after the game that I looked like a halfback running with the ball, and that's because once I finally got the ball, I wan't going to let anything stop me from scor- ing thetouchdown. Last night was Rosh Hashonah, theJewish New Year, and fortunately my parents let me play. Mr. Campbell expected me to play, and before the game he said to me, Well, let's try to make it a happy New Year. And when I came off the field after scoring my touchdown, he said, Happy New Year! The stadium lights blacked out for about forty- five minutes, so while the lights were out, my morn decided to take my brother to get a hot dog at the refreshment stands Well, the lights came on while they were still over there, and that's when I picked up the ball and ran for a touch- down. So my mom missed it. SEPTEMBER 20 During the week, I thought I'd really be up for the game because I have a personal thing against Aiken's quarterback, Barry Dotzauer. I know the kind of guy he is. He likes to brag a lot. I learned this about him from baseball. During the baseball season, he was pitching for Aiken and I was bat- ting against him and he hit me twice in one game I really didn't appreciate that too much Because of this, I thought I'd really be able to get up for the game, but come Friday, I just couldn't that much Well, I got Dotzauer once. I got him when he was returning a punt. I hit him pretty good, right in the chest with my helmet. Then about four or five other guys came over and they hit him pretty hard too, William Brooks ran back two punts for touch- downs, but both were called back because of penaltiest After each of Brooks' touchdown runs, he did a little cartwheel and then a back-flip in the end zone. When I first saw it on the game film, my jaw must have dropped about an inch because I've never seen anything like that on the football field before. Even a guy doing it in full uniform is something, but there isn't really that much place for that kind of thing on a football field, because even though it might not mean much to the game, football is a team sport and there isn't any place for showboating on a foot- ball field at all. During the game we did have a lot of penalties and at times it seemed they might have ham- pered us, even though we won, 20-0. One time, Doug McCray jumped 50 early that he got up to the line before the ball was even hiked. So he was up there talking to the quarterback, Pete
