AUGUST 15 I like to get to practice kind of early, so it isn't rush-rush before the meeting. I usually come about fortynfive minutes early although it only takes about ten to get dressed. I had to adjust ail my pads today to make sure they felt right We had our meeting and we went over a few plays and I was surprised because I remembered most of these plays from last year. So then we went out on the field, and we went through calisthenics and agility drills, Next we worked on our block- ing fundamentals. Coach Campbell's driving us, He's saying that Elder's working that hard and Garfield's working that hard. It was hot out and after the first practice, I didn't feel like doing much of anything I just Iayed around for a while, but during practice I felt pretty good. I felt I was running hard. The coaches said I was hustling. After the second practice we worked on defense mainly and we still had to run sprints. That takes a lot out of you, running it in full gear, especially with our real heavy jerseys. My t-shirt was soaking wet, all the way down, and for a while there I didn't feel too good after practice. AUGUST 21 We were running plays offensively and nobody looked too good. The first team wasnIt firing out and the second team didn't know what they were doing. The linemen weren't getting on their as- signments fast enough and the backs weren't running hard. We were running an off-tackle play and James Williams came up to the line es- pecially slow, 50 Coach Campbell stopped every- thing there and challenged Williams to hit him Campbell said he wasn't afraid of him even with- out equipment because he was hitting so soft. Campbell got a shield and Williams came up hard and hit him and Campbell pushed him right back about five yards. 50 we knew Campbell wasn't fooling around and we ran the plays harder than we had been. We have to run sprints at the end of practice. Nobody likes this but only a few people refuse to do it They take leg injuries, and these people have to jog around the field. Doc Collins always
