third consecutive phsl title Sept. ZO-Rushed in to replace quarterback Jeff Josefovsky, who was injured in the Elder game, Pete Murdock led a determined Bulldog con- tingent against the Aiken Falcons. Feeding giant fullback Eddie Shuttlesworth, who amassed over 200 yards and scored twice, Pete drove the grinding Bulldogs to an 18-0 win. Sam Mays, Andy Glas, Doug McCray, and Albert Jackson completely stifled the Aiken offense. This vic- tory proved the running strength of Woodward but left the passing game figuratively and lit- erally up in the air. Sept. 27-With the offense coming of age, the Bulldogs ran over the Withrow Tigers at With- row, 341qu. Demonstrating the depth of the backfield, Albert Banks and Billie Cox turned loose in the second half. The real spearhead, however, was Anthony Coats, who was forced to go both ways. Defensively, Coats picked off three Withrow passes, running one back for a TD. Offensively, Coats took over for Ed Shuttles- worth, who SUHQTEd a shoulder separation in the third period, and ran another spectacular TD, this one a 46 yarder. Once more the defense was superb with Coats and Ballard having six tackles each and Combs dumping the quarter- back twice. The only sour note was the loss of Shuttlesworth for the season. feelinginside, t tAlbert Banks Oct. 4eThe first half of Woodward's contest with Western Hills at Trechter Stadium was a tight affair. After twenty-three minutes of action the score was even, 6-6. Then, lightning struck in the form of Pete Murdock's arm. With 46 seconds left on the clock, Pete zeroed in on Albert Banks cutting across the middle for the TD toss. Recovering a West High fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Woodward called time out for one more play. With two seconds left in the half, Pete Murdock dropped back behind the impenetrable wall of blockers headed by Emmett Drane, Mark Patterson, and Jeff Kil- burn, spotted his primary receiver, Mark Combs, and hit him with a 25 yard bomb. What once was a close game turned to a 20-6 halftime advantage for Woodward. The second half frolic found Woodward scoring 30 more points to win 50-6. Oct. 71-The opening game in our new stadium gave the Bulldogs added incentive against Wal- nut Hill's Eagles. However, pregame hoopia and heavy press-coverage seemed to tighten the team. That tightness showed up as Woodward fumbled away its chances the entire first half. On the short end of a 6-0 score, Woodward went to work the second half and ground out two scores against the stubborn Eagles to win16e6.
