To tell Woodwardls fable is to tell the aspirations, actions, and achievements of its 3500 students and faculty members, Woodward is a small community in which its students live their high school years. A Big Brother introduces a terrified seventh grader to Woodward. Soon the seventh grader is immersed in the activities and studies that the school 03ers him. He aspires to become a vibrant part of these studies and activities. His actions during the next six years deter- mine whether or not he will achieve his goals. Woodward presents an academic challenge to its students. An advanced English student ponders Caesarls last words: llEt tu Brutefl A physics student masters Coulombls law of electricity. A geometry student conquers the proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. The valedictorian receives overwhelming applause at graduation. Before graduation however, most Woodward students become involved in some athletic activity. The second-string quarterback completes his first touchdown pass. The basketball coach wins his two hundredth game. The. baseball team wins the Championship two consecutive years. A track star wins a scholarship. All these achievements occur at Woodwardi However, Woodward is not only achievement and victory. For some it is strenuous action without achievement of their aspirations. A member of sophomore choir suffers the agony of being rejected from Ensemble. A varsity halfback fumbles the ball, causing his teamls defeat. An excellent and consci- entious student is rejected from his first choice college. These things are also Woodward; for Woodward is life. It is people of different races and religions, but people with the common tradition that William Woodward began in 1831, It is these different people, bound by a common and stirring tradition, who aspire, act, and achieve within the halls of Woodward High School.
