-W. .- ge. :ft-QW if , , r Each day goes by much the same as the one before, but our environment changes, Woodward High School, though old in age and tradition, of necessity must change too. This year has seen the beginnings of more expansion and improvement. Plants, shrubs, and trees have been planted to beautify the grounds, two new wings have been added to the building, and a new gymnasium is under construction. All of these additions reflect the spirit of Woodward High School-to remember the old, but to look foward to the new.

The future of the United States and, for that matter, every other country in the world is in the hands of each individual citizen. Each and every member of the Class of 1958 of Woodward High School is important to the future of our country and we must be aware of the fact that we are being constantly challenged to the awesome problems ofthe world. With the impact of the launching of Sputnik and the knowledge that Russia is challenging our scientists, we must prepare to face such questions as these: Is our educational system sufficiently effective in train- ing citizens that can cope with the future? There are many that believe it is not. Certainly our education must progress and advance in pace with the advances made in all other phases of living. Can Russia and the United States continue to support the population of the world? Can we continue to supply food for some of the less fortu- nate countries of the world? How can the backward nations become more dependent on their own efforts? The use of atomic and nucleur energy is a baffling prob- lem. Will our country show the way to harness and control this source of energy which may revolutionize our way of living? Certainly we, the Class of 1958, must play a large part in resolving these questions and problems. The challenge is ours to the extent that we meet itg just to that degree will we be permitted the privilege of a suc- cessful future. SWE
