Every year on CIass Day, I. the Woodward BeII.' announce to the worId that another group or Wooct- ward Students is going out to Iace, t0 hattIe, and to conquer the prohIems which it will meet in its contacts with the worIcI. At this time I can out joyoust. IiIIecI t0 the bursting point with pricIe. And why shouldn't I he proud? Look at the memories I have. One hundred and seventeen years at wonderIuI memories. WIy memories OI Woodward begin in 1831 when I was pIacecI above the Iirst school huiIding and given the privilege or caIIing Cincinnatis young men in to ImowIedge. For each OI my pIeasant years since that time I have silently thanked the man who ma e such a IiIegiossthe for me. The man who entrusted to me this honorable responsibility was William Woodward, the founder 01: Woodward High School. It was VViIIiam VVoodward who liberated the youth or Cincinnati from the bonds OI ignorance and opened to them the doors to Iearning and culture. He showed his great Ioresight in providing, tor the youth he loved, not merer a place oI sports. and pleasure. hut an institution which would serve as a hothouse in whirh the youth IquIII mature, IIeveIop. and prepare for the responsihiIities or life and titizenship ,-. a school. The Iirst Woodward schooI was a pIain two-slory brick huitding. much like an ordinary house. hut hav- ing a smaII heIIry in which I was encasecI. For ten years I remained in this position: then. in 1841, I was titted from the roof temporarily while a third Hoor was added. With this new structural addition there aIso came the addition of girls to the student body. Knowing how happy the extension of education to young ladies through his schoot wouId have made WiIIiam Woodward. I welcomed the girl students gladly and thought that: now Woodward and I had progressed as far as possihte. I remember how surprised I was when t was again re- moved from my station in 1855. This time I saw Woodward completely torn down and repIaced by a stater ,Iouristory Gothic structure. The designers had made no provision Ior me on the exterior of the new building. so I was placed inside. nearer to the youth of whom I had hecome so Iond. The last great change came in 1010 when a modern Ivive-story Woodward .-v the Woodward 0r todaywwas constructed. Yes. the Woodward ImiItIing has been ever- Changing hut tho WoochartI ideals and standartts have rcmained unchanged I-he Woodward spirit stiII prevails, that spirit OI study and work. of service and song. of unselh'shness and sacriIice. of cIevotion and cIuty, of appreciation and gratitude OI sympathy and kindhearted- ness of acquaintance ancI IriencIship. of IJrotherIy Iove and equality among men, of high ideaIs and lofty amhi- tions, of onaIty to home and to nation, of ultimate faith and caIm repose. That is why I can he so confident in announcing the entrance. at more Woodward graduates into the world. i Imow that the lame and accom- plishments of this years graduates will return to live on with me in VVoothartI s sncled halls anng with the fame aIIII arcmnplishmenls or a former VVoochaI-d graduatrs.
