He was so deeply imbued with the ideals of Americanism--life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness -I that out of his own private means, he founded a school which was to give a free puhlic education to the young people of his community. Today, the graduating class of 1942, filled with the same deep enthusiasm for the American way of life, dedicates its Annual to all those who have gone forth from the halls of Woodward High School, and are today, directly or indirectly, serving to keep alive in a war-torn world the same ideals that inspired William Woodward to found the first free public high school west of the Allegheny Mountains. May the fine traditions of their school Fill them with cour- age and the high resolution that democracy shall and will rise from out of the turmoil of the present, to Hourish anew in a world which they have helped to make hetter hy their efforts. Page Five 1 Page Six 5 I 1 X During more than a hundred years, various buildings, each known as Wood- ward High School. have occupied the same location. The first school building was begun in the early spring ol 1851: Mr. Woodward himself hauled away the first cart-load of earth from the cellar. The building stood at the northeast corner of the school lot and was built of briclc, two stories high, with two rooms on each lloor. The building was surmounted by a belfry, containing the famed Woodward bell. This was the building that was opened on the twenty-fourth day of October in the year of 1831, with three teachers and forty-two pupils in attendance. Ten years later, in the summer of 1841. a third story was added to this building: it still remained very plain and unpretentious, without any particular architectural design. For fourteen years. this building echoed and re-echoed to the tread ol young Woodward feet -1 then in 1855 gave way to a greater structure, as distinctive and pronounced in its architectural design and beauty. as its predecessor had been laclcing in it. lt was three stories in height, and was considered the noblest speci- men of Gothic architecture west of the Alleghenies. For more than hall a century, the beautiful building ol 1855 continued its noble mission ol service and usefulness 1- for more than fifty years, it stood as the representative of high ideals of life, of loyalty to home and to nation, of strong minds and great names, of consecrated teaching and of high standards of scholar- ship. Then came another Woodward. the building of 1910 1- much larger and more spacious. rising in majestic dignity against the slcies. Even at its creation it was glorified by the sacred traditions of the Woodward of the past. For thirty-two years the present Woodward High School has continued its worlc lor the youth of our city-for thirty-two years it has lifted its head in conscious pride over the long years ol service and usefulness. May it continue to instruct and inspire the youth who enter its doorl PUQP SPIN-'ll Page Eight S 'L N 1 n: f:x t it gN I tigxnli -.f X igiiglx: X5 xligxlxgi KX X I 4 it X ix I PSTN. In rendering his services as principal, Dr. Peaslee has proved that he is a worthy successor to the long line of eminent Woodward principals. He is a firm laeliever in thorough scholarship, but ahove everything else, the student is most deeply impressed with his desire to instill within the heart of each and every Woodward hoy and girl, the ideals of good citizenship. His way of life is truly the American way of life. It is men of the stamp of Dr. Peaslee who lceep alive the spirit of true democ- racy in our puhlic schools. Her students have lost a friend who was truly sympathetic and helpful with their problems, and it is deeply to he regretted that more students were not granted the experience ot worlc- ing under her rich and stimulating influence. lwiiss Guthrie was extremely talented in creative writing. Those ot us who were privileged to read her verse feel that a sweet singer has passed, bringing very definite loss to the world ot literature as well as to the world of her worlc and the world ot her friends. Marcella Guthrie won friends hy heing friendly. Both students and teachers will long rememher her pleasant smile, her cheertulness in the face ot pain and discouragement. Though her active spirit is quieted, there is in our midst an aware- ness ot her presence and a sense of gratitude that we enjoyed for a few years the warmth ot her affectionate nature, the bright glow oi her talents, the high spiritual values of her character. Neuman, the Woodward Track Team began its season with an inexperienced squad left over from the team of last year. As the Annual goes to press, the Bulldog tracksters have com- peted in two meets, failing to hand in a victory in either. Wir. Neuman is confident of a better showing, however, and cites the work of Ray Loclcard as an example of the improvement his hoys are making. In the First two meets Ray turned in winners in the mile and half mile, and just as great things are expected from several others. The Cross Country Team enjoyed a successful year this fall, running second to Hughes in an of its meets. Because this was the first year of high school competition, much credit should he given to the memhers of the squad. Page Seventy two GYM TEAM 11 n 4 s XX fulrs-alll, 1. Ixlnurv. XXIII I Huh lnvll. F NATIONAL DEFENSE atinnal Evfrnnv Artiniiivn The events of Decemioer 7, 1942, precipitated the entrance of the United States into the great war in which the worid is invoived today. VVith the entrance of our country into this great coniiict, it hecame the patriotic duty of every one to do his part in nationai defense. A chaiienge was offered to each man and woman, to each boy and girl, to every schooi, church group, and ciuh organization -1 a challenge to forge ahead in activities which would maice the United States of America first in war so that she may he first in peace. Woodward High School f- her teachers and students- accepted the chaiienge and at once emhariced on a program aimed at the highest possiioie accomplishment in nationai defense. The success we have had in this endeavor has heen such that we feet it is worthy of recognition in the Annuai where the account can he forever recorded. A campaign for the promotion of the sate of defense stamps was launched immediately and met with whote-hearted cooperation on the part of the students. Posters urging the purchase of defense stamps were prepared hy students of the Art department. Sales were encouraged through home-room promotion. Miss Grace Darrah was placed in charge of the sate of defense stamps, assisted hy Mr. Frank Floyd and Mr. Rohert Duffy. A committee of student helpers was selected. This group, composed of Win- ston Sundiin. James Schwarherg, Bot: Maples, John Kottsy, Tony iacahucci, and Vviima Guircic, has woriced diligently and faithfully each month, making prompt deliveries of stamps to the purchasers. Woodward can he proud of the response of her students in the purchase of Defense Stamps. Many students are now the owners of United States Defense Bonds bought with their accumulated defense stamps. When the government sent out the piea to conserve paper and metai and urged the coiiection of ati excess paper suppiies and scrap metai, provisions were made to comply with this request. Under the ahie promotion of Miss Jeannette Eppinger, assisted hy the iooys of home-room 206, and the members of her classes, VVoodward's paper drives were carried to greater heights of success hecause now there was the two-fold incentive of money for the Woodward Fund and aid to nationai defense through the coiiection of paper which might otherwise have heen destroyed. Mr. Lyons was piaced in charge of the coiiection of scrap metal. Each Friday, harreis were piaced at ati entrances to school and patriotic hoys and giris deposited in these containers any otd metal of which they desired to dispose. Assisting in this woric were James Daniels, Ralph Roach, Marvin Lovett, Bruce Helton, Rohert Means, and John Peifrey. This work was under the supervision of Miss Vera LeCount, Miss Marcella Schroth, and Miss Sylvia Naish. Some scrapioooics were also made hy various classes as part of their work and these were also sent to the soldiers. Pupils of the Household Arts Department under the direction of Mrs. Marie Schneider, Miss Florence Voiicmer, and Miss Mary Jane Junk, responded to the request of the Red Cross and made over a thousand bandages, besides making various articles of clothing which the Red Cross asked for. Girls of the G. S. VV. Club under the direction of Miss Hazel Orr, as a group project, are knitting an afghan. These girls include Alma Averett, Lottie Enoch, Alma Redding, Leia Clark, Lazeiia Phillips, Leia St. Clair, Rachel Kiniey, Sophie Kiigo, Ruth Johnson, and Eunice Barnes. Boys of Mr. David Lyons classes, in cooperation with the Department of Naval Aeronautics, are making solid scale models of aeropianes. The significance of this work has recently been stressed and those engaged in it are making an important contribution to national defense. The boys who participated in this program were: James Daniels, Levi Johnson, Robert Myers, Ralph Roach, Clyde Vinegar, Marvin Lovett, Bruce Helton, Eugene Nolan, Darrell Smith, Martin Williams, Fred Anders, John Jeiics, Roioert Inman, James Mapp, Edward Harper, Robert Means, Luther Anderson, Herman Taylor, John Peifrey, Ruben Sandhridge, Edward Smith, Jimmie Lee, Eiiicic Rossie, Jessie Peoples, David Baricsdaie, Milton Beuton, William Black, Ruhen Burstion, Clemens Childs, William Crockett, Alex Evangeio, Consueia Sloan, Eugene Williams, Rohert Burt, James Edwards. An appeal was made hy the American Red Cross to patriotic Americans to take courses in First Aid so that they might he prepared to do their part in a time of emergency. Several first aid classes were organized at Woodward, both during school and after school. Intensive tirst aid courses were included as part of the physiology classes. As a result of their training in these courses, the following students have qualified for Red Cross First Aid Certificates.
