There are two invariable inctices to the progress of civilization; First, the achievements 0t man in rcmoutcting nmt remaking his environment; and scconct. the appreciation of the ttisrovorios invotving the unsoon forces at the uni- verse. Tho social existence of mankind of necessity brought htmut more complex social organizations; Customs became laws and moutrters nt sociat conduct, and as a result political states were evolved. In these various fields or human activity, great mcn have arisen who have huitt empires encompassing and unifying the diverse peoples of the earth.
