K DEDICATION T0 Cincinnati. in honor of her one hundred and tiftieth birthday, we. the pupils of her First high school, dedicate this Annuai. During the greater part of Cincinnati's century and a half of social, cultural. and economic progress. VVooctward and Cincinnati have worked hand in hand. XWoociward is proud of its city, and Cincinnati might welt be proud of VVoodward. On December 28, 1788. the first group of permanent settiers landed at Yeatman's Cove and began to huiid the rurie cabins, which for them became uhome. The land heionged to John Cieves Symmes, and was a part of iand which he had acquired even hetore the North- west Territory was formally created by Congress. Among the men who stepped from one of the hroadhornst as the Hathoats were then called, was John Fiison, a schooi teacher. who devised our city's first name. Losantiviiie. General St. Clair changed this name l'ovCincinnati in honor of an association of Revoiu- tionary VVar veterans and governed the vast Northwest Territory from a fort iocated 0n the site of our present Lytie Paric. in other words, Cincinnati was the capitai of that vast expanse from which five states were inter carved. Here was conducted the first treaty on Ohio soil. The first independence Day celebration in the territory was celebrated here on July 4. 1784. and as an outgrowth of irisheEngiish animosities which were acute immediately after our Revoiutionary VVan the same year saw the first authentic ceieinralion of St. Patricies Day in the Northwest. Fort Finney arose just north or our present Ciowntown district, and From Cin- cinnati went forth indian Fighters that drove the fierce Shawnees out of Ohio. The numerous mounds and prehistoric fortresses which were scattered all over our region show that the indians had recognized the importance or our iocation. One of our euriy Presidents, hViiiiam Henry Harrison. was a Cincinnatian. it is possihie t0 aiiude here to oniy a few 0i Cincinnatiis earliest achievements. A great iniiux or German immigrants gave Cincinnati for many decades its Chararterislic Complexion. The soiiciity of her downtown churches. her interest in art. music. and education. her efficient hospitais, anti charitahie institutions, her excellent zoological garden, her secure Financial and commerciai institutions, attest to their activity. One avhievement. however. we cannot overiook. Outstanding among our earliest settiers was hViiiiam VVoociwarLi. a staunch heiicver in education for hoys ami giris past the readin' anti ritin' age. His ambition to establish a free high school was reaiizeci in 1831, when a iour-room schooi house was built on our schooiis present sight. How Close this was to the Pngu- Funr 2;,
