, II The Present Woodeeard Buzldzng N November 4 1908 the corner stone of the present Woodward Hlgh School was lald The bulldlng a beautlful structure IS five storles hlgh and occuples the entlre block bounded by Sycamore Broadway East Thirteenth and Woodward Streets The first floor IS devoted to manual tralnlng This lncludes shops for Jolnery W00dlUIhlhg pattern maklng and foundry work On the second floor lS the domestlc sclence department where sewlng and cooklng are taught Here are the prlnclpals office a large study room for boys the llbrary and two alcoves The northwest alcove I5 a patrlotlc one ln whlch are a Hag carried by Woodward boys lh the Crvll War a German machlne gun captured by Woodward boys ln the Argonne Forest and many trophles won by Woodward athletes The southwest alcove IS now the Bettens Library and the room adJoln1ng thls IS the very lnterestlng Woodward Museum and Graduates Room Opposite the llbrary IS the memorlal wlndow ln which Wllllam Woodward IS pictured landlng at Clnclnnatl ln 1791 On thls floor too IS the audltorlum whlch extends upward to the thlrd floor and has a large balcony a large study room for gurls classrooms an emergency room and a room for women teachers On the fourth floor are classrooms and laboratorles for chemlstry physlcs botany and zoology On thls floor on the north slde are large rooms for free-hand drawmg classes On the south IS a large muslc room whlch can also be used for speclal lllustrated lectures At the west end of the fifth floor are the gymnaslums one for boys and one for glrls separated by a slldlng partltlon The gymnaslums are equlpped ln a most complete manner wlth gymnastlc apparatus and a suspended runnlng track for the boys Beyond the gyms are the plunges At the east end of thls floor IS a lunchroom extending the entlre wldth of the bulldlng with a well equlpped kltchen and also a teachers lunchroom Lunches are served to the puplls at cost In planning the New Woodward the archltect Mr Gustave W Drach 49 endeavored to have a bulldlng substantlally constructed as nearly fireproof as posslble sanltary well llghted and ventllated the different departments conveniently arranged wlthln themselves and ln thelr relatlons to each other a bulldlng slmple and dlgnlfied ln design and thoroughly adapted to the uses for whlch It was lntended That he succeeded the present workable and noble structure IS ample evldence RUTH HARTMAN 25 'Nr Page .S 12 cn WOUDWAFYD 4 5 uf. ,Y , .
