PROMINENT in education, Mr. Reltig was one ofthe founders of the Area Student Council. 'T-r . tl' THE BOOMINC VOICE of a leader, expressing the t thought for the day, will never be forgotten. Faced with the stark reality of the loss of Mr. Rettig, but guided by his fine example and sustained by his belief in us, we began 1963 with a firm resolution to carry on as though Mr. Woodward were here and to make him proud of us. This type of thinking is an indication of what Mr. Rettig has done for us. As our greatest booster, he has inspired every student to do his best-in athletic contests, scholastic compe- tition, and everyday citizenship. He made us believe in ourselves, for him we could do anything - the mark of a great leader. His easy, friendly mannerg his great booming voiceg his true democratic spiritg and his genuine affection for all of us will he remembered always. This list of qualities makes Mr. Rettig sound like a legendary hero, hut he was all that and more - a real giant among men. He taught us to win and to lose gracefully. He taught us courage, dedication to a task, humility and honesty. The image of this beloved man will be with us always, shaping our characters and guiding us in our lives. Wi Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. Longfellow AS 'l'llE 'l'A'l l'Llf,R so fittingly put it, For those fortunate to have known him, nothing can now be said. He has left us, and we are stronger for having known him. l-lis influence has not died. llis leadership will not be forgotten. His encour- agement will remain in our hearts. He was indeed, good for Woodward. 5

MR. RETTIG'S SOJOUR THROUGH WOODW RD MR. RETTIC was popular with all of those under him, from assistant principals down to. students. MR. RliT'I'IC'S PRESENCE enhanced almost every school event, athletic and academic. Ilere he is seen at the annual Roman banquet given by the Latin students of Woodward. Mr. Robert Rettig came to Woodward in January of 1958, replacing Mr. Frank Duvendack as principal. He had previously been head football coach at Scott and basketball coach and assistant principal in charge of activities at DeVilbiss. During his five years at Woodward, Mr. Rettig endeared himself to the hearts of students and faculty members alike. He attended practically all athletic contests and staunchly cheered his team on to victory. Al a surprise assembly in the fall of 1961, Mr. Woodward was paid a tribute by the entire school. Here he was presented an oil portrait of himself painted by a former Woodward student, Diane Attie. A memorial scholarship fund has now been set up in Mr. Rcttig's memory. Although he is not with us, his ideals will continue to be a part of our school. l l
