As your high school career began, you possessed the feeling of uncertainty but acquired the desire to achieve greatness. During the following year, you strived to obtain your goals. When Woodward's doors opened, once more, last fall, you carried the responsibility of upper classmen. Now, as you end your high school career, you forge ahead to the many new beginnings which life has to offer. Now, as Seniors, this class can look back on their many accomplishments with great satis- faction. They were the first to have standardized class rings, they had a Merit Scholarship finalist, and they contributed to the winning of the City Championship in basketball and second place in football. ln a few days, this class of 1960 will achieve another first-they will be the first class in the city to ever graduate from the Peristyle of the Toledo Museum of Art. dwwdzdzatcaa X X X X X 1' Surrounding Mr. Rettig are the members of the senior cabinet: Don Kornowa, Sergeant-at-Armsg Gay Criscio, Secretaryg Ken Oehlers, Presidentg Mr. Rettigg Jim Perrine, Vice PresidentgLinda Searle, Reporterg Janis Baumanis, Treasurer. 4 o '4 Belief in what one is doing is the hidden key to success. Woodward High School has accepted the challenge many times this year and each time has shown an uncon- querable team spirit. Our fine year has been due to the belief that Woodward students h ave in their school and their never-tiring desire to make it a better school. We believe we have made progress but intend to set our goals higher next year. Working together is the only way we can attain our goal. Good luck, seniors, and we hope you may carry the Woodward spirit with you. di U- 4 projects. ' ew- Carolyn Kwiatkowski, a new addition to the clerical staff, has proved to be a great asset to Mrs. Manton. fi, A 7a ' In our busy life everyday, people die, and few beyond the immediate relatives and friends take note of their passing. Woodward High School has lost a good and faithful teacher, Howard Phipps. He was a quiet man, patient and kindly, but a man of great learning and high scholarship-a Yale man. He taught Latin and history or rather he taught youth. Woodward High School is better for his having been here. I would say as the Romans said of a departed brother, Ave atque Valei'- Hail and Farewellf, Mr. Phipps. -quoted from David Voss Q X ff X TOP TO BOTTOM: Don Kornowa, Sergeant-at-Armsg .lim Perrine, Vice Presidentg Janis Baumanis, Treasurerg Linda Searle, Reporterg Ken Oehlers, Presidentg Gay Criscio, Secretary. The largest graduating class in Woodward's history, the class of 1960, has left scholastic and athletic standards that will set the pace for classes to come. From its first major undertaking, its sophomore dance, Tropical lnterludef' to graduation, the senior class has actively supported and served Woodward. Activities came rapidly this year. The hustle of picture taking was quickly pushed aside by the election. While our college-bound seniors were studying for scholarship tests, the class saw the result of years of work, our football team-- a respected member of the City League. After the excitement of Christmas came rehearsals for the class play. Spring was ushered in by good-byes as seniors departed on the trip. In a final rush of activity came the memorable prom and banquet. At last . . . graduation. Who can know the mixed emotions of that last moment? Of course they will see each other again, but the realization of graduation always brings tears. Now they stand in an open doorway ready and able to meet the future. 24 JACK ABRAMS NANCY ADAMS DAN ALCALA JACKIE ALLISON RICHARD ALVERMAN BOB BAHNSEN ,mln ' . m O IQ K Su. ' . 0 . As juniors, the class of 1961 proved to be very enthusiastic. They petitioned successfully to receive their class rings early. The junior dance, at which the king and queen reigned, highlighted the traditional junior week. The varsity cheerleaders this year were composed entirely of junior girls. This is an example of the school spirit that has made the class of ,61 extra-special. 50 I Advisor, Mr. Matthews, consults with junior class president Gary Ray. JW Teamwork, courage, stamina, and desire proved to be the winning formula during the 1959-1960 basketball season. Experience seemed to be the primary factor of the Woodward Polar Bears this year as they fought their way to the top of the City League. Woodward's Polar Bears ended a spectacular season with an 11-1 City League record and a 16-2 over-all record. Coach Darrell Clay with his dynamic personality led the Polar Bears to one of the finest records in the history of Woodward. Everyone at Woodward is proud of the wonderful showing the team made this year. l52 1533 fr 'A I X ii, 3, X 5' ge EQ I' , , Z xx , Xia . Playing Cupid during Leap Year. This was a year of new additions in the girls' physical education department. To accommodate more than 1200 girls, Mrs. Barbara Schwanger was added to the W.H.S. faculty, aiding Miss Catherine McClure and Mrs. Elizabeth Ollendorf in their work. Arlene Bierly, Flora McKenzie, and Suzanne Sweney, student teachers, gained valuable experience while doing their practice teaching. For the first time in Woodward's history, an eight o'clock gym class was held. w Rocking rhythm- Teeter-totter l70 Discussing the day's activities-Mrs. Schwanger, Bess Hatzinikolis, and Nancy Lindhorst. Those girls who took band, five subjects, or who had work permits found this a helpful way of adjusting their programs. Besides the usual activities, girls had an enjoyable time participat- ing in intramural Volleyball, basketball, softball, and bowling. Additional equipment was obtained for each sport, including a new drum for dancing. This year the gym instructors were certainly successful in helping the girls to acquire sports manship and leadership abilities.
