BACKWARD GLANCE Woodward-this one name symbolizes twenty-five years of service to Toledo in education. Twenty-five years ago people watched its construc- tion and asked themselves, What type of young people will be using this building? What will be their backgrounds and what will be their futures? Will this building, naw only a frame, become a living building which will combine the efforts of teaching with the inspiring of ideals, ambitions, and enthusiasm, the ideal of leading a full and virtuous life, the ambition of preparing students to be able and grateful citizens, and the enthusiasm ta believe and put into action these greater standards of living? This year Woodward is celebrating her Silver Anniversary and is think- ing of her past achievements. She is trying to answer the questions which were asked of her twenty-five years ago. I feel that her answer, if she could speak, would be this: l have tried to place before each student the ideals and ambitions which he should respect, and I have tried to carry out an educational program comparable to the highest standards of education. l feel that in response, Woodward students have gone into the world and made a fine place for themselves and have been a credit to all. l judge them not in accordance to their worldly profit or fame, but according to their worth and service in the eyes of their God, their nation, and their families. l am humbly proud of the Woodward family. f . I i ' Ev c lX?2iSE',.f THE FUTURE? A natural reaction to a backward glance is an imaginary glimpse into the tuture. As this glimpse usually outlines our hopes tor a better tomorrow because ot advances made, a wise person will keep in mind that however great the progress may be, we shall still be working with the same types ot individuals as we are working with today. Therefore, we must not put our hopes in the change ot the times. We, instead, want to lay the toundation tor turther growth today by being an example ot the ideals we want to project into tomorrow. Woodward has made her educational contribution in the past quarter century. ln this anniversary year, we should plan cur steps tor the coming years in order that we may show tufther progress in all that we may undertake in the years tc come. --4 pffif Cdlhe ,--'E' l1eW TWO TEMPLES A Builder builded a temple, He wrought it with grace and skill, Pillars and groins and arches All fashioned to work his will. Men said, as they saw its beauty, lt shall never know decay, Great is thy skill, O Builderl Thy fame shall endure for aye. A Teacher builded a temple With loving and infinite care, Planning each arch with patience, Laying each stone with prayer. None praised her unceasing efforts, None knew of her wondrous plan, For the temple the Teacher builded Was unseen by the eyes of man. Gone is the Builder's temple, Crumpled into the dust, Low lies each stately pillar, Food for consuming rust. But the temple the Teacher builded Will last while the ages roll, For that beautiful unseen temple Was a child's immortal soul. Hattie Vose gov jwenfg- ive ecard 0 Ha WE THIS 5 lac ing eruice . . . Hallauer Assistant Superintendent Business Administration My congratulations to the students and faculty of Woodward High School for the fine educational job you are doing. The achievements of the students at Woodward in all fields of endeavor are something of which the community is justly proud. Probably the largest factor in determining the quality of any high school is the pride that the students themselves have in their school. Judith Sluder 1938-1952 HORIZON I watched a sail until it dropped from sight Over the rounding seo. A gleam of white, A last far-flashing farewell, and, like a thought Slipped out of mind, it vanished and was lost. Yet to the helmsman standing at the wheel Broad seas still stretched beneath the gliding keel, Disaster? Change? He felt no slightest sign, Nor dreamed he of that far horizon line. Woodward received to open the game but the Bulldogs got the ball on the Bears l8-yard line after the first down. Scott drove down to the 6 but the Bears held. A contributing factor to the defeat was that Bob Morrissey had been ruled ineligible the day before by the Board of Education which checks each school's eligibility lists. There- fore, the Bears' attack was nullified because it was built around Morrissey's passing. Coach Szelagowski Although Macomber scored the first and last touchdown, Woodward made enough T,D.'s during the game to make them the winners. Short line plays netted a pair of second-quarter touchdowns for Woodward as Macomber's margin was whittled to six points, lf?-l3. Bill Spencer went through for the first tounchdown after Woodward blocked a punt and recovered on the five, McVickers hit the line for two yards for another six points just before the first half ended, then ran over with the extra point. Only l9 players had to go into the game for Woodward against Waite who was beaten by the Bears, l4-6. This was the first time the Bears had beaten Waite in ten years, Both of our touchdowns came on interceptions and long runs. The Bears scored when Jerry Fuss intercepted Joe Knoskyfs pass on Waite's 45, picked up some interference, and ran down the line for a score. Don Nastahowski added the extra point. The Indians drove down- ward time after time, but the Bears stood firm, and the long punting of Gene N i Ray kept Woodward out ot serious trouble. The second pass was intercepted by McVickers on the 20, and Bob ran wide for a score. Woodward held and took the ball with fewer than tour minutes remaining, ran the time down to 94 seconds, and gave the ball back to Waite on the 20. Woodward's two scores came in the second half after the game was lost, Bill Spencer made a 25-yard run, and Bob McVickers followed this with a Zi-yard run to put the ball on the three where Bob scored for the Blue and White's first TD. Clint Bunnell drove from the five in two tries to score the second TD. This was our night and the team showed it by beating our next door neighbor, Central, 2720. This was the last game of the season. I want to congratulate the team and the coaches for producing such a fine team and a much better record than in other years. Even though we didn't emerge as the champs, we had that fine school spirit which always prevails, and when the time came for those kids to support the team, they really did just that. Even though the Waite Indians were in the lead most of the game we managed to take the lead and also the game. lt was a hard fought game, The big guns this time were Miller and Arvanitis. Wood- ward made most of their points in the second and third periods, The big guns this time were Arvanitis and Williarns who met with little opposition from the Dragons. After the second period had started Lima Central whittled the margin down to 2 points, but a splurge by Woodward put the Bears ahead by 20 points in the fourth quarter. Our first real test was the Regional Tournament witn Bowling Green as our opponent. Our dreams of being State Champions were shattered as the Sears were unable to beat the Bobcats, We were in the lead most of the game except for the fourth period when the Bob- cats forged ahead. Well, another basketball season has ended, but that school spirit which had prevailed all year will provide the spark for Qextnyeans sports. Many friends are made in the many team-work games that are played, Volleyball, base- ball, and basketball all are games which require teamwork. Good sportsmanship, friends, and enjoy- ment give the players a feeling of being a part of a team, a feeling which is needed to help win or lose, The players have the satisfaction of knowing they played a good game with a grand bunch of girls. Not only regular classes, but also after-school tourna- ments are offered to all who wish to participate, The joy of the post four years' playing, each year witlo a few old friends and meeting many new ones, has been o pleasure that l am glad I didn't miss. ,mv vwesf . illkv.f.,?f.'2'::w 'i - iw W,.:zg5.:Q.gg3 j,Q.i':Tf5,fy M ., ffafiai 1 H1253 ' Ma 339 WHY? TATTLER STAFF Mrs. Marie Ersig Advisor Susie Schaller Pat Carmichael News Editor Special Feature Emmett Sutton Co Editor Marilyn Mens Elmer Wagner Editor-in-Chief Co-Editor Under the supervision of Mrs. Marie Ersig, the Tattler has made its appear- ance on each Friday throughout the school year, Editor in Chief, Marilyn Mens, has done her best to better relations between the faculty and students, present both sides of controversial questions and, with the help of her able assistants, Elmer Wagner and Emmett Sutton, have sug- gested remedies. Feature Editor, Martha Becker, kept readers wise to recent events while Donald Claus, working hard, had the unusual distinction of handling the job of Special Feature as well as the Exchange column, doing both equally well. While Sports Editor, Herbie Lewis and his assistant, Paul Pierce, brought you the lowdown and forecasts of the big games, Eleanor Rearick was in charge of Girls' Sports. Forever on the prowl with crazy questions, Carol Sackman showed students how silly they could be in her interviews. Woodward's answer to l-ledda Hopper and Dotty Kilgallen appeared in the forms of Shirley Haddad and Nancy Teague who never overlooked a bit of interesting gossip. All junior reporters have relaxed and have stopped hiding from Susie Schol- ler, our News Editor, because there is little copy to be sent Joe Stobinski and Melvin Witte in the print shop. Working with the boys, they have done a fine job with the Tattler. Everyone has strived to live up to the slogan, Constantly, consistantly, con- structive . We only hope we have achieved that goal in the eyes of our fellow students. Sorry to leave? Maybe a little, but there is a bigger story in the offing, As for this one, this is the 30 mark for now. The frantic search for o lost cut, the final picture to be mounted, the last trip to the print shop has been concluded and a finished product comes forth to display the efforts of twelve Saga slaves . Many ideas were exchanged via the mailman between R. K. Smith Company and Sagaites before we developed the cover which would satisfy us. The Staff and salesman put on their dark glasses and went out with little tin cups in search of orders. Pictures were taken galore until our birdie died of prostration. Then came another headache when one little innocent picture was found unidentified and a cry was heard, Does anyone know who this is? But now the last desperate cry has sounded through Room l27 as the Staff has finished its job. The glue can is found dry as a bone, resting in the waste basket. The paper cutter is resting safely in the office until another year. The once crammed drawers are empty and the exultant but exhausted editors are retrieving their odds and ends while waiting for the bound and finished product.
