If this end is attained we shall feel that our efforts have not been GMM The aim of the editor and her staff in presenting this volume or lf pended in vain. 57 Q K -2 2 The Saga Staff of 1952 sincerely dedicates this volume of the Saga to Mr. and Mrs. Crouse, teachers of Wood shop and mathematics respectively. They have served many long years at Woodward High School. Before ,gazing to Woodward High School, they also taught in other schools. For a while Mr. Crouse was our dean of freshmen boys. To have started hundreds of llloodward pupils, as freshmen, on the right path in their high school life, is an achievement upon which Mr. Crouse may look with pride. Both of these teachers are keenly interested in the affairs of the school. What better way is there to make public acknowledgment of their worth than to dedicate this volume of the Wloodward Saga to Mr. and Mrs. Crouse? BOARD OF EDUCATION The Messrs. Raymond Baldwin, Grant Murray, VVayne Shawaker, Thomas Bretherton, and Edward Ames. as members of the Board of Ed- ucation, have worked untiringly to keep the schools up to a standard of high achievement. Believing earnestly in modern scientific methods of education, they have endeavored to make the Toledo Public Schools practical representatives of these ideals. Vlrhile the Board, as a whole, gives impartial service and direction to all the schools of the city, each of its members has a personal inter- est in each school and feels responsible for its welfare. The schools in return appreciate the Boardis friendly guidance and are proud to claim it as the head of Toledo Public School System. W C Slater Williaiii E Halliuer Clerk Trea uier Assistant Superintendent Business Adllllfll Il itlo 1 DR. E. L. BOWSHER Superintendent of Schools We at Woodward High School are proud that Mr. Bowsher has written the following about Woodward. uwvoodward is one of the very fine high schools of Toledo. It is recognized as one of the outstanding schools of the state and country. Her record over the years is one of achievement in many fields of education. uMany graduates of Wloodward High School are leaders in voca- tional and professional fields in Toledo and elsewhere throughout the country. alt is our hope that Wfoodward tradition will ever be kept alive, and that her future will provide added educational incentives for her students. Philo C. Dunsmore David R' Pugh Assistant Superintendent' Difecfof Of High School Educational Administration IHSIMI1011 FACULTY As we turn toward various fields of new endeavor, we pause grate- fully to think of the teachers at Yvoodward High School. Through their untiring interest in us and our activities. their sympathetic under- standing, and their helpful suggestions, they have taught us to he what we are. They have made an impression on us which time itself cannot erase. The secret of successful education is the co-operation hetween the teachers and the students. A teacher is not a hired servant. hut one who Works in our behalf, and one whom we honor and respect. And teachers, as a parting word, we, the seniors. want to thank you for the great help you have been to us. and for the many things you have done for us which brought happiness into these four years of school life. Wie take leave of you with appreciation for your conipanionshipg and through the years, we shall count our association with you as one of the privileges of our high school days. To the Class of 1952-Congratulations and Best Wishes As you leave Woodxvard High School to continue your formal education, to engage in business and industry, to enter the armed services, or to follow any other pursuit, we at Woodward stand ready to serve you. Call upon us any time. It is my earnest wish that all of you adhere to the fundamental principles of character so that you may always be a credit to yourself and Woodward High School. Sincerely yours, Frank A. Duvendack x Miss Miller Dean of Girls sue is one to advise And her advice is wise. Four years we have shared hours to- gether. I marvel that so many are so fine! As graduates you are outstanding in your community. Twelve years of school- ing requires a certain amount of ambition, perseverance, and ruggedness. Not only have you been allowed much individual freedom but also we hope you have learned high standards of responsibility to God and Man. Sincerely, Amie Miller Dean of Girls Mr. Meek Dean of Boys His advice is good. Take it. You should. Wloodward High School has had many young men in the past years who have been a credit to their families and to their school. I am sure that this year's senior class is no exception to this record of other classes. The seniors of this year are to be congratulated for publishing a new style SAGA, which I am sure will meet with the approval of the students and faculty. Sincerely C. M. How eagerly that record of the year's doings is anticipated and how keenly is it enjoyed. To produce such an annual as Vlloodward publishes is not the work of a moment. Early in the fall, preparations are going forward which are not completed until months later. Annuals represent the combined efforts of the staff workers. who have given of their time and talent, that the year book may picture truly the life and activities of the school. lt is hard to find words enough to thank Mrs. McManamon and Hpopl' Sheline for their undying patience and wonderful understanding in guiding a group of young, unexperienced teenagers in producing the Saga. Special thanks are also due to Mr. Stobinski, Don Ellison and all the print shop boys for printing the pages of the Saga. The result of this co-operation is the 1952 Saga, which the staff offers eagerly, expectantly, to the students of Woodward High School. These years have been filled with joy, sorrow, defeat, and victory. Surely, we have broadened during these years. We have learned to concentrate, to respect the feelings of others, and above all we have learned to co-operate. Through the co-operation of the faculty, the class, and the entire student body, great things have been accomplished. We owe much to our principal, Mr. Duvendack, who has been our true friend, and those of us who know him will vouch for his deep interest in us as Seniors and in our class affairs. Up to this point our lives have followed a parallel, but we have reached the fork in the road. Some will continue in their pursuit of knowledge, others will become involved in practical affairs. But essentially our future careers differ slightly. Our hopes, our desires, and our ideals are those that have been acquired in Woodward High School. These will become more valuable than mere literary knowledge in the years to come. Graduation opens to us the gateway of the world, where advantages and oppor- tunities will be ours. Let us endeavor to order our lives, so as to bring honor and glory to Woodward High School whose halls we are about to leave. ,i ry , f , -. ,A- Q ,, ' y gf ' ' :rl A 4, , . ,.,, ,, ,. 1 'c 'fl f,' 7 ll ' liz I' Q 4 fl. One of the most important aims of every organization is the develop- ment of the feeling of personal responsibility. The importance of being accountable to oneself, and, in a measure, to other people, should fix in the minds of students the value of conduct. The students are ex- pected to serve willingly on committees, and to take part in programs. The largest service that organizations render is developing that very necessary thing in school life--school spirit. It can be developed and can flourish through other means, but organizations make the process more natural and more easy. When these things are considered, organized groups in the school are an asset to its life. r flf Q WOODWARDS TOP SALESPEOPLE Wiith the price of magazines up a little and students, efforts up a lot Vlloodward is hitting a new high in subscription sales. That is how both the Tattler and the Saga staffs feel about our Tattler advisor, Mrs. Marie D. Ersig. affectionately known to the Tat- tlerites as 4'Mom,' Ersig. For 21 years the many staffs have worked with her to produce a better newspaper for Woodward High School. When I say 'cwork with her that is exactly what I mean. Vllhen our work was not up to her specifications, she never scolded or criticized. She told us about it quietly and frankly and helped us to do better. One of her achievements at Vlloodward High School was to be the first woman ever to hold a position on the athletic board. Each year since 1929, uMomW has had a leading hand in the Tattler Achievement Cup award. She, along with her many staffs, has made Recognition Day the successful event it should be. IC Z DOD SHE I.ilN . , . . , Y 'gg It seems most fitting to complete Woodward High School s baga i of 1952 with a page dedicated to our adviser, Raymond Sheline. He has served not only as our adviser, but also as a teacher and a truly great friend as well. Vials ffl f J Most of you do not realize the magnitude of his task, but I assure ly if U' if you that the Saga Staff is not unaware of the spirit he brings to it, , T1 J nor of his desire to ,assist every, member on the staff. His discerning 5 ffl ' judgment, his wholesome sense of humor, and his unfailing optimism -, sr, yy Q 1 are essential factors in the production 'offthe Saga. Gj ja Y . X X I Even though HPop', Sheline is always standing by ready to help, iff pit J . he succeeds in making the staff realize that each member has a certain i W nf responsibility to fulfill. It is the staffs fault and not Mr. Shelineis if ' X the work is not finished in time. J J , . . sy ' 'Not only has Pop, been outstanding as a teacher and as an ad- ll viser, but also he had the honor, privilege, and enjoyment of rearing X1 four handsome sons. s-Q f N ln conclusion, I should like to say: Hereis to you, our guide'AQLLLC, Q through that uncharted land called youthl By example and by pre-5-7 '55 . cept you have taught us to meet with courage and goodwill the obstacles 4211! as K LC' S .
