The theme, nHitch Your 'Wagon to a Star', was carried out in the decorations, both at the church and at the prom. The Methodist church base- ment was decorated in red and silver, the senior's colors. Silver stars were suspended from the str- eamers which hung from the ceiling. The banquet tables were decorated with white cloths upon which were red and silver runners. A A-'r BASEBALL The Woodhawks baseball season was a little slow the first three games They lost to Slater, Madrid, and Luther The fourth game they came through with a victory over Rippey by a score of Playing Roosevelt High School from Des Loines, they lost by a score of 6 O Coming back on the last game before the Sectional tournaments, they trounced Rippey again 13 6 In the first round of the Sectional tournment at Slater, the Hawks played Sheldal, winning 7 5 Woodward won the second game from Madrid by a very close decision The game belng won with a home run by Jack Cheek The score was A 2 Grimes, their next opponent, proved to be a very easy mark when the finals Dick Bailey pitched a shutout game against Slater, and it was won by Richard Carzoli scoring from second or 1 double in the 8th inning The final score being 1 O The players who helped in winning the trophy were the following Harold Luke nick Bailey, Mack Cheek,wilbur Grimes,Lesl1e Storey,Richard Carzoli Orville Becker, Larry Bice, Vilbur Burkhart, Jack Cheek Je wish the team 'Good Tlcku in the Dis trlct Tournment As only three of these boys are Seniors pros pects for the coming year look good The squad was coached by Mr Loyd Johnson 5-2. - the Woodhawks walked away with a 12-3 decision. In FOOTQAYL The football souad started the season off on the vrong foot with Madrid taking a 14-7 victory and then being overoo ered by a much larger team n eny 6 O The dec between Johnston and winning streak and won two straight Redfield 06 7 and Maxwell 6-O The Dallas Center and Woodward game was one sided with Dallas Center beating Joodward 47 15 The last two games of the season were successful, winning from Anita 26 14 and from Ogden lB 2 By the end of the season they had won four games, lost three and tied one The football squad was twenty eight strong, with eleven letter men back The olayers of the backfield were all letter men consisting of Jack cheek, Dick Bailey Dwight Marshall, and Jack Smith The line consisted of Leslie Storey, Harry Bice, Wilbur Burkhart Leslie Seeman Donald Bry ant, Marvin Schlichter, and Harold Luke The veterans showed some brilliant running, blocking, and tackling. Some outstanding high- lights were: Dick Bailey interceoted a bass and ran 65 yards for a touchdowng Orville Becker caught a 30-yard oass and ran 65 yards for a touch downg and Harold Luke caught a long bass on a sleeoer olay for a touchdown. L4-3 ii BAND The marching band was formed in the fall There were thirty eight in the band They marched at most of the home football games and they went in a bus to Johnston Station and Dallas Center After the football season was finished, a concert band was formed and they played at the home bas ketball games There were apo oximately twenty one in concert band The band played about eight numbers in a spring concert April the thirteenth This spring, the marching band was again formed to participate in the Drake Relays April 28 BRASS QUARTETTE The brass quartette was not organized until the second semester Its members were Dwight Mar shall and Lyla Olson, trumpets, Billy Pierce, bar itone, and George Paterson, trombone Their first appearance thls vear was at the annual oyster sup per where they presented nAndante Cantabilen from Tschaikowsky's Fifth Symphony At tre spring con cert they played the same number plus and old folk song entitled nGlor1a in V celsis Deo They played both of the numbers at t e senior Glass play MAJORETTES Orma Carpenter Nas the Drum Majorette this year She was a senior and seventeen years old She was a twirler two years before she became the Majorette Darlene Baker finished her second year of twirling this year She was flag bearer one year before Darlene was a Junior this year and six teen years old Dolores Doty Emily Sauers and Lois Mallan finish out t e t rling group They were all freshmen and his was their first year of twirling.
