Everyday something exciting happens and news travels fast. The students move through the halls seeing familiar faces as well as new faces. Accidents happened over the summer, but all returned with smiling faces. Each approached obstacles, but working together, they were overcome and the life of WHS moved on. Friendly Amy Forrest 2 Classroom excitement. Dustin is not going to listen to this garbage anymore. Cool P Dudes A L mong the people of Woodward High School, a certain type seem to stand out from all the rest. We recognize them by the way they talk, walk, dress, or act. We refer to them as “Cool Dudes!” Cool dudes are the ones who set the pace, know the ways, and act the best. They have the qualities that make them one of a kind! You’re talking to me?! After all these years, he’s still a COOL DUDE. The excitement of being a library aide. Andrea Mathews and Susan Jackson. 4 PASSION FOR FASHION F X ashion is an important aspect of the students of Woodward High School. There are a variety of fads, and they often come and go. They range from mini-skirts to longer denim skirts, overalls, jean jackets, Coca-Cola shirts, and maybe even chocolate pie! We have advanced in our fashion as the years have gone by. No way would we ever wear bell-bottoms with sandals. The students of WHS produce their own fashion. Each has his own style of dressing. Fashion has made the difference at WHS. Aren’t we classy dressers? Nice outfit Coach Schneider. Julie models the latest in fashion. OK. hand it over! 6 Oh! Those sexy legs. This contest was sponsored by Chorus. Compliments of The Stock Exchange Bank 7 That Q Boomer Spirit T X his year spirit moved through WHS with incredible speed. It all started when Geoff Covalt showed up with a “W” shaved in the back of his head. It was all uphill from there. Guys were all over with various designs in their hair. Even Coach Rogers was an inspiration when he vowed to shave his head if we went 4-0. Everybody got involved trying to promote “that Boomer Spirit.” The football guys have “that Boomer Spirit.” 8 Of A Kind Unique Individuals Although we enjoyed the feeling of belonging that we derived from the different groups, we were never willing to sacrifice our own individuality, but of course, we were ordinary teenagers. We validated our sense of worth by being accepted by others. No matter how much we “melted” with the group we were always aware that we were and always will be “unique individuals.” When I have ceased to break my wings, Against the faultless of things. And learned that compromises wait, Behind each hardly opened gate, When I can look life in the eyes, Grown calm and very coldly wise, Life will have given me the truth, And taken in exchange — my youth. FINAL STEPPING STONE Our senior year is the final stepping stone in the long road to graduation. Some of us are college bound while others will join the working world immediately upon graduation. Most of us were fearful of having “the dreaded Walcher” for English. She has bitten a few, k but overall, her bark is worse than her bite. Passing with good grades is the big Ik struggle for all seniors. This is only one IM stepping stone in the road of life. IJ Senior Class Officers, L. to R.: Stacy Gilbert, Sec. I have found Americans to be a friendly people, but the Oklahomans out-shadow the others in their hospitality, and Woodward has become my home. Those who have lived in Woodward all their lives find it a boring town, but Woodward was just what I needed — a home away from home. Woodward is a vibrant town with loving people who have the potential to get Woodward to where it’s going. The people of Woodward have become my family, whom I love and cherish as special members of my circle of friends. The staff and students of Woodward High School can be commended on a job well done. School has played a major role during my year, and despite having graduated from Woodward as well as High School in South Africa, 1 have learned a tremendous amount which I can take home with me. I take joyous memories, bridges of friendship and un derstanding, and pieces of Oklahoma — such as slang words, an “Okie drawl” and a couple of McDonalds extra pounds with me as I return. I love you and will miss you! Thank you for a wonderful year . . . Your friend always. This was a good way of making long-lasting friendships. The times we shared made memories we will always cherish. Our organizations and activities not only helped develop a bond between friends, but also geared us toward realizing our dreams and making them come true. Life! We’ve been long together Through pleasant and through cloudy weather, Tis hard to part when friends are dear, Perhaps will cost a sigh, a tear; Then steal away, give little warning, Choose thine own-time; Say not “Good-night,” but in some brighter clime Bid me “Good-morning!” 53 First Row. As dates and activities were proposed and debated, representatives aired their ideas, and the calendar of events began to take form. Classroom discussions helped representatives know just what the majority of Boomers favored concerning sports, organizations, and student government. The representative’s job was to report the motions, submit class opinions, and act on those opinions during the meetings. Some of Stu-Co’s spiritraising activities included the annual Back-to-School picnic, the United Fund Drive, Miss Woodward, and a series of Homecoming festivities such as spirit chains, secret pals, floats, skits, and a dance. All in all, the Student Council had a well-rounded year and a lot of fun. The Conqueror Officers, L. to R.: Cody Hodgden, President; Tanya Warren. Phillips The Pride of Northwest Oklahoma! ay Bell in deep concentration. The Woodward High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Ray Bell, has really made a name for itself. They’ve been good in the past, but this year has surpassed the rest. Starting with Hennessey, the band blew out the competition by winning Parade, Marching, and Sweepstakes. This was the first rung on the ladder of success for the band of WHS. Soon after Hennessey, they showed they were for real when they were one of the only two bands to receive a Superior rating at the OSSAA State Marching Band Contest. Then, the band proved its worth by winning the 4A Championship at the OBA State Marching Contest. The band ended a superior marching season by participating in the Peach Bowl Contest and halftime show in Atlanta, Georgia. We can truly say the band of WHS is “The Pride of Northwest Oklahoma.” Compliments of Gardner’s 69 Next year is going to have to go a long way to beat this band’s accomplishments. — Robert Brooks The Pride of Northwest Oklahoma has great field performance. We were true individuals. We could be among many, yet still maintain our individual identities. Although we were alike in many ways, we were still very different and many showed it in the way they talked, acted, and dressed. So when we look back, we’ll know this was the year we “dared to be different.” If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. While we all must be ourselves, we must also be able to function as a group. We were able to work with people with whom we shared a common interest. This helped us to build friendships that last not only during our Edition school year, but beyond. When we look back over this past year, we see many memories, each of which was shared with one or more of our good friends. I count myself in nothing so happy as a soul remembering my good friends. Not only did they help us to pursue our interests, but they helped us learn as well. They believed school days were memories we should treasure; and, therefore, many gave extra time to sponsor organ- People izations and activities. For these reasons and many more, the faculty of Woodward High are truly “special people.’’ For rigorous teachers seized my youth, And purged its faith, and trimmed its fire, Showed me the high white star of truth, There bade my gaze, and there aspire. Administration Mr. Burl Bartlett, Superintendent Mr. Mike McClaren, Assistant Superintendent Boomers, I want to congratulate you on a great year. Your achievements this year reflect the quality of our student body. Your success is a direct result of a high expectation level on the part of each student and the faculty. You have added to the tradition of Woodward High School both academically and through the activities program. This year will be meaningful to you throughout your life. I wish each of you continued success. 1 am confident that you will find that success because you are truly “one of a kind.” — Burl Bartlett Superintendent Mrs. Jody Gaston, Administrative Assistant Mrs. Carol Vloedman, Treasurer Mrs. Shellie Estes, Clerk 148 Woodward Board of Education Mr. Steve Snider, President Mrs. Jerry Meece, Vice-President Mr. John Siegfried, Member Mr. Ed Parker, Member 149 Mr. Milt Bassett, J.H. Our Unique Staff ?acuity Joan Cummings is retiring this year after teaching art in Woodward for 22 years. She attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University where she received her B.S. Degree. She did her graduate work at Western State University in Gunnison, CO. She obtained a double major in Art and Business Education. She also has a minor in Elementary Education. Although she enjoys teaching, she’s ready to give up some of the stress and spend more time with her painting. Mrs. Cummings plans to travel and do things for her family. Her husband. Bob, has been her greatest inspiration and also her toughest art critic. Mrs. Cummings has three children, Joe and Jerri Jay who both live in Norman and Jim who coaches and teaches in Woodward. And two grandchildren, Sean and Josh; if you have an hour, she will tell you all about them. Mrs. Cummings was chosen “Woodward County Teacher of the Year” in 1981. She says it was a real privilege to be chosen. However, one of her brightest moments was when she was chosen Woodward’s “Mother of the Year” in 1968. Mrs. Cummings knows that she will miss teaching very much, but she also knows she will enjoy retirement. Convention in Kansas City. He also had the privilege of speaking in Washington, D.C. His wife Mary Ann has been a great support to him. They have two children: Robert and Jack. They also have five grandchildren. Robert pumps wells and runs a mail route in Kansas. Jack, his other son, has obtained his Doctorate Degree. He is now teaching meat judging at New Mexico State in Las Cruces, NM. Mr. Thomas is well-known as a great story-teller. All of us will miss his unique ability to entertain an audience. After retirement he plans to stay busy farming and helping kids. Mr. Thomas, you are truly “one of a kind. ’ We will miss your cheerful attitude and willingness to help students. Jimmie 158 Great Coogie-Moogies orc s cannot express the con-tributions that Franklin Dela-f no Shive has made to Wood-ward High School. From his glowing personality to his strict administrative policies, Mr. Shive was an educator whom all could like and learn from. Although his career did not start in Woodward, his Boomer spirit and pride outshined the rest of the schools he was at. Mr. Shive’s Boomer career started in 1968 when he became the Football Coach and Athletic Director. In 1969 he took on the additional responsibility of Assistant Principal, which he would keep until becoming Principal in 1973. From 1973 until 1983, he was the Principal and Athletic Director. He was the Principal from 1983 to December of 1987, at which time he retired. The students and staff of WHS are deeply indebted to Frank Shive, a man who touched many lives. Mr. Shive, you are truly “one of a kind,” and we will miss seeing you in the halls of WHS. Mr. Shive as we know him. Coach Shive poses in the BOOMER stadium in 1972. 159 A true BOOMER haircut! We would like to sincerely thank the Boomer Boosters and Sponsors. Without their generosity, this yearbook would not be possible. We’d like to express a special thank you to Johnny McMahan of Woodward News, Tom Quaid of Taylor Publishing Company, and Chesnut Studios. 1988 YEARBOOK STAFF Editor — Alisa Roddy Asst.
