Freshmen’s first victory yell. Compliments of Ideal Food Store BOOMER SPIRIT — n. 1. Energetic feeling you get when you belong to that elite group — the Boomers. 2. Participating and supporting every activity that goes on at WHS. 3. Contagious disease that affects everyone when you know you are 1. Boomer spirit was revived again as the 1985-86 school year fell together. Boomer spirit ranged from decorated wagons to roaring, excited crowds. Spirit splashed from season to season, and everyone added to the spirit throughout the whole year. Below: Seniors have that Boomer Spirit. Pat, get off the other line! Always having someone to keep you company, having someone to share clothes with, constantly being compared to one another, or being called by the wrong name are various events in the life of a twin. There are two sides to everything, especially in being a twin. Good things: wearing each others clothes or splitting the cost of something they each want. Twins also always have someone to share a ride. Then the disadvantages: being called the wrong name ranked high on the charts, sharing things, especially cars ran a close second, being compared to one another in grades and personality and getting tired of always being together tied for third. Twins aren’t only people with the same birthday, they each are quite unique individuals. They should be on the Doublemint commercial. Glamour magazine is waiting! ONE OF A KIND Sis always comes out on top. 4 Compliments of United Supermarkets V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N — In the Summer Sun? This is hard work. Compliments of Northwest Federal Savings and Loan. Summer vacation, Spring Break vacation, any vacation was looked forward to! Vacations are a time to relax, a time to let it all hang out, and a time to have a plain old blast. Lots of kids went skiing over vacations, some headed for the sunny beaches of Hawaii, while others stayed at home and enjoyed WW town. Why were vacations taken? Well, let’s just say that we needed and deserved a break from the homework, teachers (they needed one from us too), and most of all from each other! We were always refreshed after a good vacation and ready to come back and hit the books! Below: Time out for a break. 6 Compliments of Stock Exchange Bank Clothes “R” Us How about this outfit? Compliments of Ruttman Printing Clothes were a “big thing” at WHS. There were some kids who kept up with the latest fashions. Some students stayed with the “totally punk” style of dressing, like, know what I mean? Others wore the standard “Joe College” look. What was in style in the mid 80’s? For girls, it was oversized sweaters, large prints of anything, stirrup pants; and just about anything you wanted to throw together. For guys, the traditional oxford and blue jeans were worn. Some went with the “cool” look of baggie, pleated pants, and button-down shirts with “string-bean” ties and loafers. Below: Toni and Kathy pose. tw Waiting for advice! Leadership in action. PREPARING FOR LIFE Everyone at W.H.S. realized that there would come a time in our lives when we would have to make decisions on our own. Some of the young adults took advantage of opportunities that came their way. A few assumed leadership roles; others practiced skills for jobs while the rest studied extra hard for college. We all prepared to the best of our ability — naive to the real, outside world. No one could tell us what the world was like. Experience, as we would later find, would be the best teacher. We did our best in everything and gave our all. 8 Celestine learns the ways of America. Compliments of The Bank of Woodward Big HAIRy Problems Compliments of J R Transport Yes, this is my real hair. The guys show off their very short hair. Did you see the HAIRy problems W.H.S. had this year? For starters, none of the guys could agree on a length of hair for the top of their heads. Most guys went with a shorter hair cut that brought about the clean-cut look, while other guys stayed with the long length in back. The girls, on the other hand, agreed on using a slap of mousse here and there. Bobs were here to stay and so were body waves and curly permanents. Everyone liked the “tails,” and many hair styles were accompanied with one. What a mess of HAIRy problems! f Below: Private First Class Benton reporting for duty. Sir. We really started this year out with some great student participation! Everyone was busy talking about summer fun and getting reacquainted. Some of the chatter was about what it was like to be a little freshman, and what it was like to finally be a big Senior. Of course, like all picnics there was plenty of food, which kept the guys happy (we believe they consumed four hotdogs apiece) and a numerous amount of mosquitos which Melanie Boyett fiercely fought! Also, the playground was crowded with screamin’ adolescents who seemed to have regressed into their childhood just long enough to ride the merry-go-round and swing on the monkey bars. Hudson Butler and Kimi Lewis even took a spin in the barrel! Yes, we definitely got back into the “swing” of things at our traditional back to school picnic. “Freshman! The disappearance of the school’s cameras slowed us down but not for long! Then, the usual class pictures taken early in the first part of school weren’t taken until Halloween! The rush of meeting deadlines and just the hassle of getting caught up and staying that way were major requirements. But over all, the year’s been fun; we got our vision on the gold and strove for accomplishment which proves that miracles still exist. You just have to look for them. Don’t you dare take that picture! A rookie on the staff. Yearbook Staff, First Row, L. to R. Christina Hartsell, Yvonne Clark. Marie Aldous. Second Row: Janice Nelson. All of the work paid off and became obvious when they participated in contests. They received a superior rating at the Hennessey Marching Contest and the NWOSU Marching Contest. Student Body is a teen-peer education program of FHA, Inc. In the Student Body, teenagers, familiar with facts and resources on good health, use positive peer pressure to influence other teens to develop good habits and attitudes about their bodies. The Student Body has three goals, and one is to provide facts in the areas of self-awareness, nutrition, and fitness that will help teenagers make informed, responsible decisions about their health. Although these are the most obvious factors, there are other factors more important such as inward beauty and hard work. The nine girls that participated in Miss Woodward put themselves to the test and passed. Everyone of them contained the most important factors, with a select few being acknowledged. Heidi Freeh received Miss Congeniality and Second Runner-Up. Ginger Bateman received First Runner-Up, and Toni Lucas became our Miss Woodward 1985-86. Crowning of the Queen was at 7:30; Kathy Jordon was crowned 1985-’86 Football Homecoming Queen by Dale Steenbergen. The Boomers gave the fans excitement in an overtime battle with Guymon, while the Boomerettes came out on top over the Tigerettes. Spirit days were another special part of Homecoming Week. They included Mickey Mouse Day, Safari Day, Overall Day, Inside-Out Day, and Black-n-Gold Day. Secret pals took part in doing nice things for the players during the week to get them ready for the game. They added that extra touch to the week. Ronda Ogden was crowned Homecoming Queen by J. W. In addition to the regular routine, freshmen were added to the squad, which made for an interesting year. This year was different, though, because the cheerleaders led the school with more spirit than ever, something that WHS hadn’t had in a while. They gave the students the pep to pull together and make WHS the best it could be. Vivid-Spirited Colors Sharing the moments. Football Cheerleaders. L. to R.: Geri Marlatt. Melina Billings. Rain, snow, hail, or high winds, both teams were DETERMINED TO WIN. And bad weather was what the opponents got. The girls showed the coaches and the boys that they really knew what the football was. The Juniors fought hard, but the Seniors prevailed with a score of 16 to 14. Well... at least that’s what it said on that big sign at the end of the field. Go Kathi. Sr. Offense I Many Woodward High School students remember the long hours of homework, slaving over problems that you have never seen before, or the work turned in out of last-minute desperation. But the times you spent in class, whether good or bad, will never be forgotten and will always be useful. Education makes a people easy to lead, but difficult to drive, easy to govern, but impossible to enslave. Digging for the answer People will do just about anything to pass Walcher’s class. The purpose was to encourage young people to submit their work for publication. They met on alternate Tuesdays after school where they heard professional writers and studied various ways to improve their writing. 83 85 Boom Pulls Through With Flying Colors August practice had come and gone and all Summer Pride sessions have paid off. The fight began on September 6. There were ups and downs throughout the season, but the Boomers stuck together through it all. Somehow, we knew it would come together in the end. And it did! The Boomers won District! It was a special year for everyone. Robbie Benton said, “We could have given up, but we never did!” Plus Rod Moore added that, “The team really pulled together when it really counted.” Bruce Hines agreed! It was a super year! With the speed and grace of eagles, and moves that the Red Baron would envy, they would attack and terrorize their rivals bringing home another victory and waiting to fly again. Give it back! 95 Lonmi 4H Class 4-A State Champions Home away from home was the term the Boomerettes applied to the basketball gym from October 1 through early March. Many long hours were spent day after day conditioning and working hard to improve toward that State Championship Title. The weeks got shorter as everyone looked forward to Wednesday, which was known throughout the season as “Cookie Day.” It kept the determination alive. The new “slide drill” was something all the girls liked. It gave conditioning a new outlook. For the first time since 1979, the Boomerettes captured the first place trophy at the Moore All-Girls Basketball Tournament. Kristy Beauchamp Ronda Seniors. Ronda Ogden. Audra Pollard. They battled in a close game against Guthrie and came out on top with a score of 44-42. This was the third State Championship for the Boomerettes. The last championship was in 1976. Sparking Energy The Woodward J.V. Basketball Boys created a new type of energy that has scientists baffled. This energy was demonstrated by electrified movements that created excitement and enjoyment for the Boomer fans. Scientists are trying to make copies of this magical ingredient but have had many failures, because Boomers are the only ones who possess this “Sparking Energy,” and the energy keeps building. I need some help! 99 Accepting the Challenge Once upon a time in a faraway land, there was a group of girls who were called the 89erettes. Their team was good, but their ultimate dream was to become a Boomerette. To achieve this goal, they would have to accept a challenge that would be long, hard, and tiresome. However, these girls weren’t quitters. They knew what they had to do. They blasted opponents and brought home victory after victory. Whether they became Boomerettes or not, one thing is for sure. They “accepted the challenge” and came out ahead every time. The 89erettes show their pride. 89erettes, First Row. L. to R.: Larissa Briggs. Kim Terry, Debbie Fortenberry. Heather Hutson. Sports, special events, deadlines, and assignments came and went. Grades were given and of course D-Hall was too. Everything a person could imagine happened, such as: some people had to take Mrs. Christopher’s American Government class two semesters when only one was required, Mrs. Churchill gave her fun vocabulary tests, Mr. Goodson loved announcing D-Hall lists and telling us about the new speed bumps in the parking lot and the 10 m.p.h. speed limit, the “ Boomer football team won District, the Boomerettes won State in basketball. As of this writing, the Bowl Team has won all the tournaments they have participated in including competition against 5-A schools. They are still in the O.S.U. Shoot-Out and are headed for Nationals in Miami, Florida. Band Spirit was revived, wrecks oc-cured, and should we say other minor, juicy, events happened, hint, hint? Other things went on that were so important; but due to lack of room, we will remember them in our minds. The Boomer Spirit was fantastic, and it was worth the effort to make it great! 159 Akard Florist Auto Brokers Accessories The Betty Company Brinkman Realty C D Conductor Service, Inc.
