An Average Friday in a Student's Shoes. 7:00 Ring, Ring. Alarm clock goes off. 7:15 Rise and Shine! 7:30 Feet meet shoes. 8:15 Shoes meet gas pedal. 8:25 Shoes arrive at school. 8:27 Shoes are running. 8:30 Shoes barely make it. Mr. Shive is standing at front door. 10:00 Shoes squirm all through Walcher's class. 2:00 Shoes get pepped up at assembly. 8:00 Shoes cheer Boomers on to another victory. During an average day, shoes walked to their locker at least 9 times. They roamed the halls at least 6 times and any other time they could convince the teacher of an emergency. Shoes worked, ran, played, and generally kept busy. They aren't shy; they stopped to pose for pictures a time or two. No wonder kids need a new pair of shoes every two weeks. Finally, 12:00 shoes retire! What a day! It's as easy as takin' candy from a baby, isn't it boys? Boomers mourned death of tornadoes. Dick likes to be different. 3 Behind every woman is a good man. We thought you were a tackle, not a back. Thinking . . . What a headache. 4 Madness at Our House A Record Year Remember how we sweat in greasy fast-food restaurants for the minimum $3.35 last summer? Sure. No tips either. But we didn't hesitate about spending $40 on a pair of Bass to keep our feet dancing till midnight. Why hesitate? Remember when school started and parents were urging us to get back to the basics? We enrolled in Stagecraft, Aide, and Yearbook. And what a nuisance it was to cross Oklahoma every morning. We kept looking for shortcuts to school, but we ended up at Spudnut getting a coke and a donut. The Wagon kept mentioning that it was a record year. The football team, the kids, and student participation were phenomenal. Sure. Records were being set in every corner of the school. That same word keeps popping up. What word? Records. Like Metal Health? Not that kind of record. I'm talking about the kind of records like 'top honors,' enthusiasm. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Uh, huh. It really has been a record year! The few — the proud — The OFFENSIVE LINE! 5 Back on the chain gang. A real Boomer Come on Robert, show us your punkeralls. Peeping Tim 6 A Week of Fantasy Hey dudes, something really radical happened during Homecoming week. We had these five days and Student Council said, Hey dudes, let's dress up, okay! So all the really way rad dudes had a day called Punk Day. I personally call it New Wave, but that doesn't really matter. Anyway, everyone really got into the spirit and came up with some really tubular outfits. As a rap, the day was really knarley. Oh, then on another day, they had Mash Day, but that's another story. Ya know what I mean, Vern? High fashion runs in the Covalt family. 7 Merbie's bright-eyed and bushy-tailed! 8 The Best of Friends If anyone asks you ten years from now what you remember best from high school, nine times out of ten you'll think first of your friends. A FRIEND IS . . . Cynthia Parker — Someone with whom you can be yourself not someone you are not. They understand how you feel without your having to explain yourself. A friend is someone who gives without expecting anything in return. A friend helps make memories that last a lifetime. Travis West — Someone who shares the good times and is still there during the bad times. Barbara Orr — Someone you can trust and tell secrets to, and they won't tell other people. Someone who is always there. Shane Smithton — Someone who you can talk to and will never turn their back on you. To have friends you must be a friend. Sherilyn Hock — Someone who cares no matter what's going on in their own life and is always willing to lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on. Carol Barker — A Senior with a car. Baker, Monica-Babe, and Sher-bear. Hey boys . . . Where's Mr. Shive? Kiss me, you fool! 9 10 Look Out For Number One Kim Adams Lynn Adkins Amy Akins Tim Albin Curt Alexander Alan Anthem Monica Armstrong 12 Compliments of AMERICAN NATIONAL BANK Rod Armstrong Marci Arnold Marvin Babb Becky Baird Samantha Barker Darren Batt Van Benton Lisa Bergeron Ann Bihlmeyer LeNae Beaner Vita Blackard Kristi Boon Lynn Bornholtz Glenn Billings Calvin Boydstun John Brennan George Brown Ray Browning Cindy Burwell Compliments of KRISTI'S CELEBRITY HALL 13 Ben Crabtree John Cuevas Edwina Day Robert Day Jody Derrick Tally DeWolf J Joy Dudley Howard Dumas Jay Elliott Chris Evans Compliments of ANN'S Terri Fowler Angela Frank David Gall Lori Gamble Gigi Gardner HARDEE'S WOODWARD COIN CLUB 15 Tara Gentry Janice Gilliam Angie Glisson David Gibbs David Girvin Pam Goodale Most Talented: Lance Helms and Kim Parsons Joe Goodballet John Grunke Lisa Hacker 16 Compliments of MCDONALD'S RESTAURANT Angela Hasten Dwayne Holford Melinda Irwin Tami Hauth Angela Holman Kevin Jackson Karen James Mike Jamison Troy Jamison Tom Jensen Greg Jeter Compliments of HILDINGER SERVICE CO. 17 Katrina Jones Jana Keyser Sam Jones Debbie Kincaid Kyle Kornele Jamie Kyle Mike Johnson Monte Kahoe Shelly Johnson Steve Johnson Andy Lambel Karen Langston Deonna Leerstang Stewart Liles 18 Compliments of NORTHWEST FORD LINCOLN MERCURY Danny Jones Johnny Ketcherside Angie LaFleur Brenda Long Eunice Loos Robert Lyon Jeff McMurphy Leslie Marlatt Deanna Marran Jeff McIntosh Janet Mauldin Vernon McIntosh Compliments of SPC SYSTEMS, INC. 19 Kim Mitchell Tom Mitchell Mike Moser Monica Mullins Cynthia Murlin 20 Compliments of STOCK EXCHANGE BANK Rhonda Nelson Ricky Obermeier Christy Phares Tami Outhier Donnelle Painter Joe Pecho Kim Parsons Shawn Peters Cynthia Parker Michell Pearson John Pipins Laura Rasmussen Jeff Rittenhouse Cecilia Roach Compliments of JEFF STRICKER MOTORS Shane Smithton Lisa Sparks Kim Spence Mary Staats Kim Strieker Jeff Sturgis 22 Compliments of V.F.W. Something like you're both swamped and excited at the same time to be a part of the student body leadership. Nobody really knew how much planning it took to get things rolling. It not only took the Student Council but the entire student body to make the activities successful such as the special days during Homecoming in which the student body participation was awesome. During that week, hours were spent making Boomer Beans, locker decorations, and secret-pal cookies. Student Council helped with the United Fund, and it sponsored the Miss Woodward Pageant this year. Being a member of Student Council is certainly not a job that can be taken lightly for you feel responsible for the amount of student body participation. Working on the yearbook was as much work as it was fun. The following will fill you in about how it was done: We spent many hours after school listening to gripes and groans. We typed, checked, destroyed and retyped a numerous amount of times. Our photographers kept busy by taking pictures, printing, shrinking and reprinting. (Got the picture?) Are we glad it's over? YES!! But we can't wait to start all over again next year! As Dick stated, It is a loose atmosphere, but we get the job done. Monica added, It is a really great class. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it when we see the finished product! Once a tin Tom helps staff at Gage Workshop. Sitting, L. to R.: B. Orr, P. Bihlmever, M. Roddy. It takes many hours of work and when a group spends many hours together you have to learn to put up with a lot. There will always be disagreements, but in the end a very close group resulted. The Band was very enthusiastic at supporting the football team and they attended the out of town games. They attended marching contests at Wichita and at Weatherford where the WHS Flag Corps received a Superior Division. Chesney Ann Crawford and Jeff Bird Cynthia Parker and Brad Wolgamott Homecoming was such an exhilarating event for some — for others, it meant lots of hard work, but it was worth it. The Fair Barn was filled with more original floats than ever. Lots of work and hard play went into the finished products. All week long, the student body helped build enthusiasm by decorating lockers for secret pals. The Queen was announced on Monday of Homecoming Week — what a surprise! Michell Pearson enjoyed her week-long reign as Queen. Attendants were Cynthia Parker and Lisa Sparks. These girls along with Chesney Ann Crawford, flower girl, and Jeff Bird, crown bearer, made an elegant Homecoming Court. Escorts were Van Benton, Darren Batt, and Brad Wolgamott. The Boomer Marching Band entertained during the Coronation and at half-time. The Boomers pulled through a 7-6 win over Dodge City to keep their 1 4-A rating. Following the game Stuco sponsored a Homecoming dance. The end of the evening's activities left us with many fond memories. Lisa Sparks and Darren Batt 67 A Time To Shine .. . The highlight of Woodward High School Basketball Homecoming Week was the crowning of Miss Cynthia Parker as Homecoming Queen and a light show with the Mothership Connection playing after the games. These events made this Homecoming most memorable. The Band and Cheerleaders provided a pep assembly on Friday afternoon after a week of Dress-Up days. The Boomers played the Guymon Tigers with the girls winning and the boys being defeated. Homecoming court was made up of Cheryl Meece, Alan Shive, Greg Covalt, Debbie Kincaid, Andy Lambel, and Cynthia Parker. Grant Walker crowned Cynthia as the 1984 Basketball Queen. I sometimes wish the season wasn't over. This was my last year to play football at Woodward, and I wanted to go out on top. We had a great year, but we fell short. We all wanted to take state. 1 wish it wouldn't have ended this way. It depresses me to know that I'm finished playing football at Woodward. It would hurt less if we had won state, but that's history now. When you wake up the morning after the game and you can barely walk or lift your arms, it means you either hit somebody really hard during the game or they hit you. It makes you feel good to know you played well and hit hard. If you're the person who got hit, it makes you want to go out the next game and play extra hard. It psychs you up. There's a saying that we have and that's 'No pain — no gain.' So if you don't hurt the next morning, you don't gain anything. I'll miss all the aches and pains! There's not anything to do now. I'd almost give anything to start all over again. Just for one more down — Anonymous The closer Glenn gets . .. the harder they fall. Built for speed. 78 L. E. With the execution of the three D's — determination, dedication, discipline — along with good defense. Coach Lewis felt that his team could have a winning season. He constantly reminded his players, 'Men, with an all out effort each time you hit the floor, the wins will take care of themselves ' The season was off to a slow start with the opening game at Elk City, but with a team like the Boomers they never let defeats defeat them. They came back and displayed their winning ability by triumphing over Alvie. Overall the statistics were not impressive but statistics are not the only basis in determining a good team. Playing To Win And Doing It Whether each game was played for someone special or for themselves, their hearts were always in it as much as they could be. Long hours after the rest of the students were long gone from school, the team was running, sweating, jumping, and working towards one goal — that basketball goal at the end of each victory. They struggled together and trium- phed together; they were together. They shared their joys with the fans and suffered pains as well. The Top of the Ladder Through this yearbook you are tied to a special place, a certain time, and to people who became special because you shared an important part of your life with them. The events and people portrayed here are a part of your roots, and will remain an important part of your life. 1983 was the year our national leadership declared Quality Education Is Essential to the Survival of the Nation! and suggested that it be given top priority. In Woodward, quality education was — as always — the top priority in 1983-84. The year of outstanding accomplishments — in the classroom and in the many school activities. The spirit, leadership, and example provided by an excellent senior class contributed greatly to making 1983-84 a really fine and memorable school year. Thank you, Jim Castleberry Superintendent Mr. John Swafford, Admin. Assistant 156 Leaders of the Pack Dr. Phillip Sims, President Mr. Ed Parker, Vice-President ■■ mmmm Mr. Steve Snider, Member Mr. Harry Billings, Member These are the people who have made our education possible. This Board made many important decisions that the students never knew of. We wanted to show our appreciation fora job well done. There is an old saying that the course of civilization is a race between catastrophe and education. In a democracy such as ours we must make sure that education wins.
