One activity followed another: Howdy Week, Overall Day, Hat Day, Sunglasses Day, Cowboy Day and finally, Homecoming! Student Council members worked for a month writing speeches and contacting previous Football Queens. The excitement was contagious as the day drew near, than in the past years. A few partial seniors thought it was the best homecoming ever! To top it off, we won the football game!! After that, there was the blood- mobile, powderpuff football, and in- tramural basketball. Student Council was more active and involved this year than in previous years as more members at- tended thc regular meetings, and a and we were not disappointed. The parade had 30 entries and was bigger lot more of the student body par- ticipated in the activities. H bi hx gn 1 af K' 3 -X S .. s , , . 1. 1 if C ,,,, P J Y A D No horsing around in the halls! They also got to bring home the coveted Coca-Cola Spirit Award which was the first time W.H.S. had won it. Karen Dauphin, one of the head cheerleaders stated, Our ma- jor goal was to get the spirit go- ing again in Woodward High School. We have really tried hard and hope we have achiev- ed it. Along with the eight Varsity Cheerleaders, there were four Jr. Varsity Cheerleaders that promoted spirit at the Jr. Var- sity games. The Spanish Club is convinced there are such things as ghosts as they even walked beside them the night of their Halloween Party which was known as The Day of the Dead . Halloween was celebrated in Spanish style in the Commons Area, and then, ghost stories and games were played in the cemetery until 1:30 a.m. Serving a chili supper before the fall play and selling cakes at all the home football games were just a few of the many projects the Spanish Club held for fund raising. Another Spanish Club project was changing the Commons Area into a market place for a spring mercado, fair . Mexican food and souvenirs were sold, and films were shown. A guest speaker, awards, skits, and of course, a Mexican meal were all part of the Spanish Club's annual awards banquet. gQueXPasa'? fy! Mrs. Gilbert, Cheri McGee, and Fran Parker attended the fall convention at Central State. Election of officers and mini-seminars were held in preparation for the individual meetings throughout the year. FTA members also attended the spring convention at OSU. Members received first-hand experience when they became teachers for a day. This gave them a chance to work with the age group they were interested in teaching and experience in handling classroom situations. The year was ended with a spring banquet where they honored their favorite high school teacher of the year with a plaque, FTA Officers, L. to R.: Cheri McGee, Presidentg Rene Brown, Student Councilg Tammi Crusha, Vice-Presidentg Desha Brown, Treasurer, Pat Jensen, Secretary, Fran Parker, President-Elect, .loannie Conley, Historian. The Woodward High School Drama Club's purpose is to en- courage the advancement of stan- dards of excellence in the dramatic arts. The Drama Club produced a fall production, a contest one-act play, and a Children's Theatre which was held in the spring. The play selected for this year's fall production was Neil Simon's com- edy, God's Favorite. The Drama Club also served as the source of revenue for the Speech and Debate Team for their entry fees to tournaments. The Speech and Debate Team attended five tournaments where members competed for one of the top three slots in ll different events. These top three placings then qualified for the Regional Tournament where the top four placings of that competition ad- vanced on to the State Tournament. A new coaching staff and a multi-formation of- fense helped create the winning at- titude. These, combined with an awesome defense, kept them in several close battles. Looking at the final 5-6 record doesn't tell you how many close games the Boomers struggled through. Two games in a row, the guys fell 7-6g then, two short weeks later won a heart- stopping 14-13 homecoming. They kept the fans and the students on the edge of their seats all season. The last bus trips with the music blaring, the last after school prac- tices, and the last times to play before screaming crowds are over. On the bright side, there is no more running bleachers. Ten senior boys made it tough for underclassmen to get a suit, but they worked hard at what they did. Dress was a main feature on all trips. The guys looked debonair and were always topped off with hats. Six senior girls did their best to keep the sophomores in line. Besides the players, three more senior managers graced the trips and let everyone know that Srfs are no. 1. The teams will miss this group next year, not only because ol' their athletic abilities, but also because of the fun and excitement that they created when one or more were around. 90 wifi- xy A X ,.. my .qu - - 'zkziwmii fi? She feels her most rewarding experience in high school was being a member of the basketball team as it taught her how to get along with others and work together as a unit rather than as an individual. 4 Wet Y 'Q I Steve Heckart, the son of Mr. and Mrs. fs ff-Q5-L Don Heckart, was chosen Mr. Boomer for the 1980-81 school year. No longer will it be necessary to use the terms New High School and Old High School since Phase II of our building project has been completed during the 1980-81 school year. Future classes will not be inconvenienced by being shuttled back and forth and should certainly benefit because of the entire program of studies being offered at one site. With the completion of all the athletic, shop, vocational, and fine arts structures, Woodward now has one of the finest high school plants in the State of Oklahoma. Of course, new buildings do not automatically result in an excellent learning program. We believe, however, that your new environment cer- tainly enhances the possibility of such. Our goal is to offer the students of Woodward high school the best educational opportunities possible. Quality education requires a combination of excellent facilities, materials, equip- ment and instruction. Even though the Woodward community can supply these things, it is still up to you as a student to realize the importance of a quality education and take advan- tage of the opportunities afforded you. As we enter the decade of the l980's, may you continue to strive for excellence and the term, Boomer Pride, become a reality to each of you in a true Sense' - Lloyd L. Kutch Dr. Lloyd L.
